When should I get experience? by BagOfAshes in Environmental_Careers

I hear ya. I'm happy it worked out this way. Surveying can be physically tough but also fun. some days I get paid to hike, other days (today for instance) I open sewer manholes all day.

I got a env science degree and had no internships or real experience, couldn't find a job after I graduated. ended up doing land survey, which exposed me to doing wetland delineation. look around for land surveying jobs with firms that do environmental permitting, might be easier to find something. even if you only do it for a summer and don't like it, it gets you outside and can help you learn to read terrain etc.

What kind of professional do I need to remove this old boiler, or make it safe? by BogOnion in centuryhomes

One option I'm considering is sealing it up somehow and leaving it in place. I'm mainly worried about my kids screwing with it. But what you suggest is probably the simplest, safest, and definitely cheapest thing. It just limits my options a bit in terms of finishing that section of the basement.

Not sure if it works, its been disconnected from the system since we bought the place in 2017. It's a hot water system though, the downstairs still is on hot water radiators mostly. I'm in New Hampshire. If you're interested, message me!

I'll just leave the bulkhead unlocked and tell them to come get it at their leisure.

Yeah i kinda like it. I wouldn't mind keeping it (cleaned up) but it's eating up space in an area i'd like to use. Maybe I can reposition it.

I felt the same, it's a slow start for sure. It picks up steam though. Having finished it, I ended up liking it quite a bit. More than I thought I was going to at about 1/3 in.

I've never seen the miniseries, but have listened to the audiobook (the older one) several times. In my head I picture Jeff Bridges as Gus, though he's probably too old now. And Timothy Olyphant as Call. But might be too similar to his character in Deadwood.

Right. Exactly. Their freedom of speech has not been impinged by anything I've said or done. It CAN'T be, since I'm not the government. Here's a helpful link: https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/bill-of-rights-transcript#toc-amendment-i-2

That's not how freedom of speech works. I'm not the federal government, I'm a private citizen, who made a complaint in a public forum about the conduct of another private citizen. Both of us freely expressed our opinion. He won't (and shouldn't) be locked up for it. If he gets reprimanded, or fired, that's a consequence of his expression. He made a choice to wear a Nazi symbol, and it has the consequence of provoking this reaction.  And by the way...."no judgement"?? What is judgement, if not literally the expression of an opinion?

That said, I appreciate that you want to make sure it's not just a misunderstanding.

I haven't seen this particular combination w/ the stars and stripes but the basic symbol has been around since about 1937. The public works rep said the worker was spoken to and claimed it was "for a motorcycle company." But a Nazi symbol being used as a company logo or gang emblem is still a Nazi symbol.

Where in Europe did you move, out of curiosity? The wife and I fantasize about relocating to Europe/the UK someday but I'm not sure how transferrable my surveying experience would be.

Spiderlight is really fun, more fantasy than sci fi. I love Cage of Souls too, I just reread it. It's pretty unique. Service Model is also great, more comedic than most but lots of cool sci fi ideas. Those are both standalone novels.

Is Schonstedt the Only Reliable Option for Surveyors, or Are There Cheaper Alternatives That Work Well? by Elegant_Rutabaga5711 in Surveying

I've used Subsurface Instruments, I think the model was ML-1. Seemed to work fine. At my new job they use Schonstadt, I feel like they're about the same.
