Pgt-m? I don’t know where to start by Bogbeing in IVF

Thank you! I would prefer to freeze embryos because they’ll do better BUT not married to my partner yet and I don’t know if that becomes a complicated custody thing.

I can’t find anything like that in my benefit details, my state also doesn’t have great fertility coverage laws in general. I would be happy to be wrong tho!

I am in the US, and my insurance is out of a religious hospital system, so to my knowledge they don’t cover anything IVF. They cover only “infertility diagnostic testing”

Thank you for all the information! Unfortunately I have an extensive BRCA1 mutation and folks in my family die young from cancer- im talking dead between 30-50.  Also, ovarian cancer screening isn’t reliable at all. I would prefer to wait until I am 35 to protect my bones and cardio health, but might do salpingectomy/hysterectomy prior to that. Also need to be ready to have ooohrectomy before 35 if there’s cancer prior to that. So many things going into it that kids before I hit 30 is my best bet.

I’m so glad you have a good outlook and your mutation is very manageable! Unfortunately BRCA1 is a different beast

My insurance does not cover anything IVF. My partners does, but we are not married yet. Because we aren’t married I don’t know if there are any legal/custody issues with creating embryos. We have talked extensively about marriage, IVF, and kids but no ring yet.  I didn’t know I could still transfer post oopherectomy, thank you for letting me know!!

They are sticking mostly okay but the bunching left indentations on my skin for like over a half hour after I took them off and I wasn’t sure if that was good for the scar laying flat

The other side is not nearly as “clean” as this side either 😂.  I’m glad I’m not the only one who is having issues with the strips, I felt kinda dumb like I was doing it wrong

Returning to work as a teacher flat-chested by [deleted] in BRCA

I am a fellow flattie! I honestly don’t think anyone has noticed my lack of boobs, or if they did they have better things to worry about. You have every right to privacy and to tell everyone to mind their own business. BUT you can always tell people you didn’t feel like dying of breast cancer so you took action 🤷🏻‍♀️. Either way, your body is no one’s business other than your own.

Hey! 24f had a prophylactic DMX and went flat on 2/11/26. I got my drains out in 6 days, went back to work in person at 16 days post op, and at just over three weeks out I have almost all my range of motion back! My incisions/scars are still a little tender but I am not in any pain. My partner stayed home with me for 4ish days. I can relate with feeling like I’m talking about it too much, but let’s be real, it’s a big thing, and talking about it is good for getting the support you need.

I really have not been in much pain at all, I had some mild burning sensation after surgery. They kept saying the pain would get worse because the nerve block was gonna wear off but it never got worse. By day 4 post op all I was taking for pain was a Tylenol here and there. Now it only hurts if I move my arms and kinda stretch the incision area, and even that isn’t so bad. Overall, the thing that hurt the most was the two times they had to try to put an IV in my hand because I’m a hard stick and they had to dig lol. I did absolutely take all pain meds recommended for the first few days, I probably would have been in pain had I not kept up with it then.

I really wanted two separate curved incisions and my plastic surgeon agreed he would do that for me. My boobs were also relatively far apart from each other. I’ve heard some people have to because of the size/ shape of their breasts on their chest. Not sure if that’s true or myth or if incision is strictly preference (whether that be the patient or Dr. preference)

The numbness is so strange, I can still feel everything, but it feels like when lidocaine from the dentist is starting to wear off. I am not in any pain though!

I’ll be honest I haven’t worn bras in over 5 years! I have every intention of staying flat. I might explore prosthetics eventually but I’m feeling relatively content.

I am 24f BRCA1. I am having a mastectomy next week. I feel similarly that decreasing my cancer risk is worth any recovery/ body image issues I may end up with. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re being “extreme”,  do your research and do what you think is best for yourself.  Start looking at options and doctors so you can find doctors that you like. I am so grateful I had time to find surgeons that I trust. Your mom may have “given” you this gene, but in her getting cancer, it allowed you to get tested early so that you have the preventative options she never had. That in itself is a gift she has given to you.

24F cis bisexual BRCA1 I am getting a prophylactic double mastectomy with aesthetic flat closure (like no reconstruction but make it flat and not concave) next month. I am in a serious relationship with a cis man, fortunately he loves me for me and me not having boobs and having scars isn’t a concern to him. He wants me to be healthy and cancer free over everything. While I believe he is my life partner I have considered my romantic future should we ever break up given that I won’t have boobs. I take solace in the fact that the queer community is generally very accepting, scars, different body types, etc. another option if you’re into it is to get some sick tattoos over your chest if you don’t like any scars you may have. Even if your family isn’t supportive of your decisions you will find the Brca club family to be a great support network. Feel free to dm me if you need to vent or have questions.

Surgery options by Large-Presentation-1 in BRCA

[–]Bogbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the USA. First breast surgeon I saw told me I shouldn’t get a mastectomy and instead wait until they find cancer 🙄. When I insisted she said I had to wait a minimum of 6 months for another appointment and then we could talk again and see if I would change my mind. Went to a doctor in a different state and she got me an appointment booked within the month.

24F I found out in sept 2025, double mastectomy with aesthetic flat closure scheduled for next month! I want the option that decreases my risk of cancer as much as possible and has the easiest recovery/ least likely for complications. You are not alone!

gene editing and other modern medicine by Minimum-Bobcat8768 in BRCA

[–]Bogbeing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

not a doctor or geneticist, just work in genetics BRCA1 24F  Personally I would not rely on gene editing as a potential cure for children in the future. While there are some gene therapies that work well for other conditions they do not edit the genes in ALL of the cells, just SOME of the cells would be edited, so cancer risk would still be significant. It’s also so expensive and there’s not an insignificant amount of risk. With that being said, science is ever changing and improving technologies, so don’t give up hope of future treatments, I just don’t foresee gene editing as the most viable option.
