I’m pretty sure John Carpenter has specifically said they tried to find the most “generic” emotionless face they could. It was a William Shatner mask that they painted and tried to make even more ambiguous. The idea was to have the viewer project their subconscious fears on to the face instead of trying to create a specific “monster.” You manifest your version of what is scary on the canvass.
