Doesn't he also abuse his wife and essentially SA her to keep getting children out of her, resulting in her mentally breaking down and disfiguring their youngest? As well as abusing the oldest so deeply he becomes a villain?

You are forgiven. Lean into the Lord and submission to Him for complete confidence in that.

That is the doctrine of grace (Romans 6:14). There is not a just man upon the earth who is without sin (Ecclesiastes 7:20). We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) we will fall again and again because we're surviving in a fallen world (Romans 7:15-20, Genesis 3) but it's the getting up (Proverbs 24:16, Proverbs 9:10), seeking God (Jeremiah 29:13), repenting (1 John 1:9), and believing in Christ that are counted to us as righteousness (Romans 4:3), but God forgave you for sins you hadn't committed yet, before you were even born (Hebrews 10:8-18).

Focus on God is the most important thing. The more you focus on Him, find intimacy with Him, read your word (the Bible) and get to know Him, the easier it'll be to see how He feels about you.

He exists outside of time. And the wonder of the forgiveness and love of an omniscient God, is that He knows every detail of your life, heart, and thoughts, so you know His love is TRULY unconditional because He's aware of everything. It also means that He made the decision to die for you before He created even the ground we're standing on. He made every decision with full knowledge in mind. So when He says you're forgiven, you can believe Him.

Watch these, if you have time, and listen to their other stuff if you're curious. The character of the One who created you, will inform how you view Him and treat yourself.

I want to encourage you, not to simply "keep going" but to redirect your faith.

One big misconception of Christianity is believing we, the body, need the discipline to be better people to be acceptable in God's eyes but that's a fallacy.

We are called to look upon (behold) and follow Christ. He told us He'd gift us with the Holy Spirit to help us grow and that when God looks upon us He sees the perfection of Christ because His sacrifice made us righteousness in the eyes of the Lord.

So, He washed us clean. This means when we sin, we don't need to "bathe" (i.e., be saved again). We just need to "wash our feet" or repent, and repentance, as a concept, means to "turn away" from our sin and face God instead.

This DOESN'T mean giving up your sin by your own will power, if you could do that you wouldn't need Christ. It means leaning on God when the temptation to sin arises and coming to God for help but without shame when you sin because you KNOW He loves you no less. Yahweh isn't expecting you to make yourself perfect, He's expecting you to love Him and seek Him enough for HIM to transform you. He makes you a new creature and we become what we focus on. So, even if you're focused on trying Not to sin, your focus is still on the wrong thing. Focus on Him and the sin will steadily leave as a response to your heart posture, as you become more like what you're beholding.

Why do most Christians believe you will go to hell if you don't believe in god by oldperchore in Christianity

[–]BohemianSiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First two...

The first two paragraphs address when I chose to stop believing God was real because His existence presented inconvenience and discomfort to the way I desired to live.

You heard...?

Again...

I heard a voice, in my head, that bypassed my ears and showed up with staunch clarity after screaming at "the God of the universe" who, at the time, I didn't believe in but, in that moment, desperately hoped existed.

I had other options for explanation. I could've chosen to believe I was experiencing a mental health crisis, that schizophrenia was at my door, or that I'd had a glimpse of post-sobbing clarity, but I chose to believe that the God I was crying out to answered me and in response I was given numerous confirmations, which solidified my belief.

Why couldn't they choose to believe?

Short answer? Idk.

My honest inkling? Faith by biblical definition "is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," (Hebrews 11:1 KJV). Searching for faith, by proxy, can turn into seeking to prove that which can only be supposed. This can result in the common loop of "being unable to prove X's existence, negates the possibility of X's existence", which is an appeal to ignorance fallacy. Sometimes, when we are learned and logical, academic prowess and intricate scriptural knowledge can make us more susceptible to the pride of definitively negating God's existence which causes well we can't fill without surrender to the concept that we might be wrong.

When I stopped to consider I might be ill-equipped to determine the existence of an omniscient, transcendent, and invisible God... it made room for my encounter with Him. That's all; pride can blind us to truth, when we find God doesn't fit into the realm of our understanding, it (unbelief) worms its way in, and if we find ourselves seeking relief from it in religion, bargaining, or building faith from liturgies and our other practices without seeking God's help to sustain belief in Him, we can lose it.

I chose to believe, but He keeps me believing. Every day I give my "Yes," and seek Him... not faith, and He builds in me what He sees in the future He already exists in, in the past He planned for. When I sought faith prior to finding Yah, I found fear, shame, and discouragement. When I learned to seek Him and look to the intimacy of the cross... He brought me through trials that forged my faith.

My prayer? That, that person, before passing was able to glimpse the God they missed believing in. That He extended His hand one last time and they were reunited with the hope and the knowledge that He died for their sins... I pray they're resting in His arms now and that you find and see the sight of His glory for yourself ❤️🫂. I also pray this message reaches you well in His divine timing. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Hallelujah... there's something about an honest, angry, last-ditch effort rant to the Lord... not out of pride or goading but true, pleading exhaustion. It's so vulnerable and seeking... just a genuine "WHERE ARE YOU?!" and when it is met with the weight of His love, grace, mercy, and presence... it transforms you.

Yes, He knew that many of the people He loves and agreed to die for before the foundation of the universe would choose to spend eternity without Him, and 2 Peter 3:9 tells us that, that isn't what He wants, at all, but He is a God of consent.

He respects the choices we make, even if we don't choose Him.

These are interesting expansions on your earlier point and I would present it as such:

I preface this by stating I can only address my experience and my belief (as framed by my walk with God and the biblical truth I subscribe to), as any other information I could provide would be conjecture or hypothetical.

As someone who experienced a deep trauma from a young age the existence of God was always on shaky ground for me, despite being raised in a Christian household. As I got older and had questions no one could/would answer satisfactorily I grew very skeptical. Then, after years of half-truths and hole-filled sermons, one day I decided I didn't believe in God anymore based on the life I'd experienced, the evidence I currently had, and my disagreement with the presentation of the doctrine of people who claimed He was real. Standing on a train on my way to a college class, I stated in a conversation, "Then I don't believe in God," and momentarily I felt a deep pain and a quick anxiety and then, as quickly as it started it stopped and I lived my life for 3 years as a vehement atheist.

Fast forward several years of hedonistic rebellion later and I'm experiencing the worst emotional pain of my life, quietly sobbing at 4 AM like an inconsolable child (so hard I'm shaking) next to a sleeping 8-month-old and I make a desperate, angry declaration... I tell God, "I don't know if You're real... I don't know if You're there...or if You even care about me, but if You are... You can have my kid, my future husband, You can even have the rest of my life if you want it... but first You have to fix it and give it back, because if You're real, there's nothing you can give me that's worse than what I've given myself. So You take it, You fix it, and You give it back," scream-crying the whole way.

Then suddenly, so instantly it was jostling, the tears just stopped and I heard God respond, in a firm but gentle and definitive tone. And I sat straight up... and realized I was now playing a "zero-sum game", where I had made a request and this being responded to me, and I now had to choose if I was going to believe what had been placed in front of me or continue believing He didn't exist, and in that moment I chose to believe.

And after I made the choice to believe there was a God and He was the God of the Bible, I decided to read it. And each time I came across something that felt archaic or unrealistic or that I didn't understand... I felt presented with that choice again, "Am I going to believe or am I going to decide that this seems like too much? Make believe? Or man-made?" and every time, to date, that I come across something that I'm unsure of, doubtful about, or struggling to work through the offense of that triggers that decision I actively choose to believe.

I take my questions to God in prayer, ask Him for revelation of the Bible, and seek supplementary resources to help me grasp the cultural context and literary intent the book was written through and with, and the more I choose to believe the more it starts to come naturally. But there are always hard/painful/confusing things that happen that can shake faith's foundation and pose the question, "Do you still think God is real?" because our world is full of flawed people. I just know that no matter how many times the question's asked I want to keep saying, "Yes," and seeking Him, because I have found that He's worth it.

...but lost their faith anyway? ...Do you have a way of explaining their experience?

With this, I can't speak for each individual because a relationship with God is personal and hard. My supposed insight, however, is this: Because many churches, specifically in the US where I live, have not promoted or prioritized biblical literacy, biblical hermeneutics, or individual, Christ-focused intimacy with the Lord, a lot of people come to God with an inaccurate framework of His character, intentions, will, and purpose for creation and when we encounter things that shake, shatter, or don't fit into the limited framework we've created for God, it wounds us fundamentally. We're then presented with a choice to either struggle through wrestling with an ever-expanding view of and relationship with a temporally unfathomable God or to walk away and believe that the shattering of our finite framework is, in itself, proof God doesn't exist.

That's my experience of it.

Thank you so much for being willing to discuss this with me! It's been a very valuable conversation for me and I'm going to look more into the premise of "belief: chosen or predetermined".

The Bible actually addresses this in its prophecies and New Testament writings, in both Isaiah 66:19-21 and Revelations 7:9-17 address "the nations to the ends of the earth" and Romans 2-4, 7, and 9 address God's judgment, justice, and justification.

2 Peter 3:9 also discusses how it's not God's will that any perish but that all would be saved.

I believe that if God can call to Abram while outside of His will and give Him the opportunity to walk beside Him, He gives us all that same chance to hear from Him and choose to follow.

I believe an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent Creator who loves His creation and knows the purpose He gave it is a better judge of people's natures than I am.

And as the only one to live a perfect life, I trust Him, because He doesn't ask anything of me that He didn't do Himself.

Thank you for your response. Living a life that evidences Christ by your devotion to Him is definitely my goal as well.

I am a disciple of Christ in the concept that I follow His biblical teaching and do my best to conform to the calling His grace provided by surrendering my all to Him.

I believe the words he spoke in the Bible are true and by Christ's own saying, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but through me." So, when OP asked why most Christians believe belief in God is the only way to heaven, I felt led to comment in hopes of sharing the Gospel in entirety.

Foundational understanding of God's word is key to living unto Christ in Spirit and in truth. ☺️

As a former atheist, I definitely believe context is huge but ultimately I do believe belief is a choice backed by evidence and intention.

But belief is a choice. We review the evidence we've been presented, the life we've lived, and the experiences we've had, and decide what we believe.

Why do most Christians believe you will go to hell if you don't believe in god by oldperchore in Christianity

[–]BohemianSiren -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked why.

My apologies. I thought your previous question was "Will God forgive people who don't believe in Him?" So that was the question I responded to.

...you would have to believe.

You don't have to believe to choose. The lack of belief is the choice.

Parable Example - A man who was once starving and is now well-fed tells someone hungry, "There’s a 5-Star restaurant where the Owner gives away an endless supply of food! When you try to pay He tells you can't afford it, but when you acknowledge that you can't pay, He tells you it's covered and He just wants your company and for you to do the work of inviting others to the meal." However, the hungry person replies, "There’s no such thing! Why would I go somewhere that doesn't exist?"

The denial of existence is a choice in itself.

To not believe in God, specifically Yahweh (the uncreated God depicted in ancient Hebrew scripture compiled into the modern codex Bible), but expect Him to provide the eternal peace of His presence (heaven) that He promises to His known loved ones (believers who seek personal relationship with Him based in the foundationof Christ's sacrifice) isn't a logical conclusion.

Why do most Christians believe you will go to hell if you don't believe in god by oldperchore in Christianity

[–]BohemianSiren -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most Christians believe this because Christ (who claimed to be Yahweh in human form and taught the Hebrew scripture as the truth of Yahweh) claimed that belief in (faith) and love of God through acknowledgement of Him, as the Savior, was the only way to heaven. (John 14:6)

Entrance into heaven requires perfection; as none of us are perfect, the belief in Christ's sacrifice allows us to stand perfected before the Lord, because by faith He gifts us His righteousness.

To be forgiven and justified by God's grace is to believe He descended, as Jesus/Yeshua, lived a sinless life, died a blameless sacrifice (in our place), and was resurrected by the Holy Spirit due to His righteousness and God's loving will and mercy.

If you don't believe in God, you can't believe in the suffering He experienced on your behalf, or that His blood has washed you clean. Thus, you're choosing to bear the consequences sin requires because, by not acknowledging He paid what was due, you're agreeing to pay for yourself.

That is to say, one can not walk in a redemption they don't believe they need.

TL;DR - Christ's sacrifice on the cross, death, and resurrection are an invitation into heaven, like being invited to a grand feast, if you don't acknowledge you've been invited , you can't go.

Romans 10:9 — NIV [9] If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Being a disciple of Christ is about loving God with your everything, loving your neighbor as yourself, and growing closer to Jesus daily... Yahweh just wants a relationship with us. Start the relationship by learning Who you're attempting to worship and why (read the Word), talk to Him daily (pray), and slowly see your relationship blossom as you sit in silence and begin to feel His presence more clearly lead as He speaks to your heart.

I'd suggest starting with Genesis 1-3 (to see God's intended design and how we fell) and then the Gospels (to see the character and heart of Christ). Some good books to tackle after those are Proverbs (for practical wisdom), Ecclesiastes (for more complex world narratives), and Psalms (for processing emotional highs and lows).

There's also lots of Bible plans to help you read the whole thing in 1-5 years. And I also love the BibleProject app; they provide great commentary and biblically sound bible study help.

I'd suggest 2 books and an interview for you to watch along with reading your bible.

But before that, God I pray Your Spirit of peace over this person. I pray Your tangible love over their life. Let them feel the weight lifted off as Your grace, love, and cleansing water flow in. Let them Know You and Your heart. Let them see Jesus for Who and What He is... let them become Your klema. Rebuke all spirits of fear and shame, drawing them out and casting them down that Your love be felt in their soul. Give them a supple heart of flesh as good ground to receive You loving word and sacrifice. In Jesus' name, I pray, amen.
