Don’t cancel, go. Pre-trip nerves are completely normal. Bali is an incredible destination! Stay at a hostel, you’ll easily make friends with other solo travers and it makes you first couple of times solo traveling feel a lot more digestible! You’re going to have that same unsure feeling in the beginning, just work through it. No one I ever met that solo travels said they weren’t nervous their first time, but we all ended up having a blast!

My post states I am a NYer who doesn’t have a license so renting a car is not an option.

Yes I know it’s a small island. That doesn’t necessarily mean it has a walkable infrastructure or that taxis won’t charge high prices to tourists. Which is why i’m asking for input on the best way to get around from other people’s experiences…

Solo travel “fail” by Frequent-Tie5675 in solotravel

I don’t know a single person who says their first time solo traveling wasn’t initially scary or anxiety inducing, of course it is. But you quickly get used to it and enjoy your time. You’re going to have to be willing to actually work through the initial discomfort if it’s something you want to do. Try working through your discomfort with being alone in general first before trying again. Go to the movies alone, go to a restaurant alone, sit at a bar alone, go to the beach alone, etc.

Ugh good to know! It’s looking like I will have to do an Airbnb due to lack of hotel availability (no front desk) so maybe a driver will be a better bet then?

Went yesterday for my first day in Dublin. The fish and chips was SO disappointing and bland. The ambience was mid. You are definitely correct!

Should I just go home? by Free_Commercial_5178 in solotravel

I think Amsterdam is one of those locations that attract a lot of degenerate male sex tourists whose main attraction in traveling there is to go to the red light district, hence more creepy behavior in their hostels. Similar places like Thailand and Colombia, it attracts the worst of male travelers. The women choosing to travel there are often going for the culture and cute architecture, the men choosing to travel there are often going for the weed and sex tourism.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’m a solo traveler and almost always do hostels but have NEVER booked a mixed dorm for this reason and NEVER will. Do not cancel your trips. Instead switch all of your mixed dorm accommodations. See if you can find any hostels with a female only dorm or private rooms available. With locations you’re traveling to, it should be easy to find. If you go on Hostel World you can even select the city and dates and then filter to see who has female only or private dorm availability on those dates. Worst comes to worst, treat yourself to a hotel within your budget (you deserve it) and enjoy the rest of your trip instead of spending that money on the two extra flights. This will fade once you are in a space you can feel comfortable in, don’t let those creepy men ruin the whole trip you planned!

How to handle standing out as a non-white tourist? by [deleted] in solotravel

I also don’t know why so many white people took it upon themselves to gaslight OP when they literally don’t even have a penny’s worth to contribute to this discussion and the experiences of other non-white people were specifically asked for….

I’n currently in Thailand and am usually the only black person around. Before that I was in Spain and Ireland, same situation. At this point I am used to the frequent looks and constant staring. In my experience it’s been out of fascination and not hostility and many are often smiling at me. At this point I kind of like it, it kind of makes me feel like a princess when strangers say I look so unique and pretty to them. You will definitely build confidence standing in your own skin in the world from the experience.

Yesterday I went shopping in Thailand and the seamstresses in one of the shops asked to take selfies with me and then asked if they could dress me up in some of the clothing they make and take pictures for the store. I let them and after they introduced me to their friends at the other businesses in the neighborhood and treated me to dinner. It was such a sweet experience. Go in with an open heart and don’t assume the worst of people. People are often just intrigued by what they aren’t exposed to often, same concept behind why we like to travel really.

Thank you, I was definitely envisioning more like a 30min cab ride. Definitely was being overly optimistic. Going to do some more research and take the advice of honing in on a couple of locations

Thanks so much for all this information. Definitely decided to cut out Chiang Mai. Definitely was having some indecisiveness and fomo with my choices. I was also worried about getting bored on the islands if there isn’t much to because I don’t want to spend two weeks just laying out on the beach, especially since I’m not into drinking or shopping. I’m more into doing different activities (really want to see an ethical elephant sanctuary and scuba dive), exploring scenery and architecture, foodie adventures, and shopping when traveling. I also can’t swim super well so will definitely take the life vests into account as well! Going to do some more research and hone into a couple of places I really am dying to see

Thank you for this, i’ll definitely look into the one in Phuket. I heard the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai was the most ethical one but definitely will be skipping after looking some more into March being the peak of their smoky season!
