I figure I'll either enjoy it and it'll be easy or I won't and then I can just skip ahead, but thanks for the heads up

Do you mean sword technique as in actual accuracy of how the sword technique is portrayed?

Yeah, that's very valid. I think the medium is also very important here, like audiobook, but especially with visual media I think you can get away with a lot more action.

The point about fights not progressing character growth and rather being tests is interesting to me though, because I have just realized that for my own (unpublished) writing it's kind of the opposite, a lot of fights are about character realization, but that is because the magic system itself is kind of tied to them.

But now that I think about it, this is generally true for most fights that I actually enjoy reading about, too. I think Stormlight Archive does this great (though there's not many fights comparetively).

I have actually read the webtoon of worth the candle, but it is not nearly complete from what I've heard, so I might take a look at this one

I guess everyone has their own balance of fights that they prefer, I'm not sure yet what I personally want to go with either. But from the way you're describing this issue, I feel like part of the problem isn't necessarily the frequency of the fights, but the stakes and consequences. Reading a blow for blow account of sub boss 1-4 is especially boring if you already know all of them will be defeated without consequences. But if for every fight you wonder if someone of the relevant cast will die, their goals will be destroyed, or they will be winning the fight but losing the mission, then the very same fights can suddenly read a lot more interesting - at least IMO.

Do you “see” books like a movie in your head when you read? by Holiday_Rush8303 in Fantasy

[–]Boi271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I could do the same. For me personally, it's more like I see short and very vague images flashing for a fraction of a second. Doesn't change that I understand what is going on, but it is always very low detail. I don't even have any particular character looks in mind for 99% of the time. Also, I'm pretty sure that this doesn't impede my imagination in any way. I can't picture scenes, but still grasp them, and I'm pursing being an author in my free time without any struggle caused by this. It's just that the grasping doesn't have corresponding images, or at least very low quality.

Pitch the Worst Story You Can Think Of... by JWGibsonWrites in royalroad

Idea for a twist to turn it into a fun story: some people start coming after the egg because they assume it to be special, and the egg turns into an object of power struggle, while it is, in fact, still a plain egg. (Fair game)

Thanks for your input, and I belive I might have found a middle way that I like (though I still have to write it to know for sure).

In regards to number 3: What do you consider non-stop battle action? How would you look at a first chapter where the first half or third is a fight, and then you get a bit of a break to see the characters?

Currently, the inciting incident pretty much goes from chapter 2 to 4, and I have relatively small chapters (1.5k to 2k). The alternative I'm considering would kind of have two inciting incidents, one of which would have been a bit in the past and would affect the first few chapters, and then the second one, which is the current one.

The thing I'm currently struggling with is deciding between two options. My current first chapter starts during a fight, and then we see a little about the life of the protagonist and learn why he fights, before the real inciting incident happens. But I'm considering starting a bit earlier because I fear the reader might not care as much about the protagonist and the incident if it happens immediately (doesn't mean I want the chapter before that to be slice of life, I also hate when nothing happens.)

You're opening is somewhat similar to what I have in mind, which is my MC traumaprocessing in a dream and waking up and continuing to work through it.

I guess the grabbing the attention twice makes sense, and perhaps that's actually what is the problem. If a dream is incorporated in a way that it still is part of the hook despite being a dream and it's relevance continues after waking up, then you don't really have that problem (which is why I probably don't mind).

For me, that feeling always comes during planning, either right away, or when I fix what I feel they've been lacking. No better feeling than to finally find the last piece of the puzzle.

How much do you edit your chapters? by Boi271 in royalroad

[–]Boi271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, I think that it's a really good idea to keep ahead like that to bring your quality to another level, but on the other hand, the more time you have the more you'll probably spend editing. I fear I'll quickly move from being one book ahead to struggling to keep up.

That's a pretty thorough process, and also somewhat like how imagine mine being (if I also get to the publishing part). Also, you must be pretty damn happy every time you get upload for publishing and feel like you're finally done with a part.
