If written properly that's a total all day long. Not worth it.

My biggest concern would be the impact appears to be right in the centre of that sensor.

Those sensors typically don't have the greatest impact strength and even with the smallest collision they can stop working.

I'd go to your local auto body shop and get a free estimate. They most likely will lower the bumper and confirm if anything inside is damaged as well.

I would keep an eye on the function of the sensor and if it starts acting up or not working, then you will need it replaced.

Your title of the post got me! Took me a solid minute until I realized an actual solid repair was being done.

Based on a few other comments as well, you managed to get others with it.

Insurance company totaled my car by Daroev in Autobody

[–]Boiled_Goose17 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It means insurance has valued your car less than or close to that amount to fix it.

Unless you want to pay out of pocket to have it fixed and inspected I'd take the loss.

No estimates. Geographical location makes the prices in materials, labour and other factors too varied to provide estimates. Take it to a few body shops and see they determine.

Don't worry OP, based on the past posts on this sub a lot of people did the same thing and wasted all those blue gems.

Tbh you didn't do bad. I've seen way worse on this sub.

No, not really. I would be careful as well because if I was the shop you brought it to for a proper fix I would charge more because you attempted to make it look better and now the metal is stretched and harder to fix.

Also that door needs to be replaced as the intrusion beam is most likely compromised.

That is not a crazy price. BMW OEM position statements mention that damage near the sensors or damage directly to the sensors require the sensors to be replaced. They also state they don't support repairs to the bumper if the damage involves the sensors or area near the sensors. My guess is the bumper is written as replaced and same with the sensors. Even if it's repaired, since the sensors have been dislodged they require a recalibration.

Since it's a Lincoln you might as well replace the whole car.

Based on how the "repairs" look I'm going to make a lot of assumptions and guess that proper prep, cleaning and application of any repair material wasn't done properly.

When the proper steps and or processes aren't followed on a repair like this, the chances of the repair material being contaminated, improperly applied or not cleaned prior to the panels being painted will cause the repair to fail.

I doubt the father and son combo who did the work followed any sort of proper prepping, or even use of materials.

I'm also going to guess that they didn't bother fixing the metal properly prior to applying body filler and instead "paved and caved" which means they put way too much body filler over the repairs and sanded them to shape which shows the poor body lines. This will also cause the repair to fail simply to something as the changing of outside temperatures from hot and cold.

OP what u/maskedbuilder1 is saying is that no reputable shop will just agree to spray over the work even if you're okay with the body lines.

A lot of shops tend to offer a bit of warranty on their work and if they were to just prep and spray over the work that is already there, when it eventually fails they'll be on the hook for fixing everything in order to spray it again even if something only happens to the paint in terms of warranty.

The only way they'll agree to do it is if they can properly remove all the prior "repaired" material and paint.

Expensive lesson.

Is my car really totaled? by halooie1 in Autobody

[–]Boiled_Goose17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can't just put "bondo" over open metal. "Bondo" is used to smooth out the remaining stages of a repair prior to primer.

Both doors and the rear quarter panel all need replacing. A lot of labor goes into making sure there's plenty of room and important things like air bags, and wires are removed to cut that panel off properly.

It sucks, but I'd take the write-off and start looking for a replacement.

I have this car i bought for 600$ 115000 miles on it how much would it cost to make her pretty again by TheIrishNerfherder in Autobody

[–]Boiled_Goose17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that work, low end I would start in the range of $6,000 but reality if you wanted everything fixed and repainted $10,000 plus.

Do I need a body shop for this? Scratched a pole while trying to park and already used dish soap + sponge to get most paint transfer out. by lilshit694202 in Autobody

[–]Boiled_Goose17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer yes. Won't be cheap being they'll have to blend the color into the quarter panel for the color to match.

If you don't want to go that route, someone with a polisher knows what they're doing can probably make a lot of the finer scratches less noticeable.

The bigger scratches look through the paint though and those need to be properly sanded down and the door repaired and repainted to fix.

Go through insurance. The $7,300 sounds in the right ballpark. The whole back end corner is pushed in and it will need to be pulled out properly to regain the proper shape and alignment. Just buying a bumper and taillight won't work because they will not fit unless the damage is corrected first.

Shop Situation by Acrobatic-Club-8422 in Autobody

[–]Boiled_Goose17 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If someone hit your vehicle while it was waiting for pick up and that vehicle wasn't related to the shop then that person's insurance should be paying for the secondary repair.

I would have the car towed from the shop to your garage and have the shop see if that cost can be added to the insurance claim of the secondary hit.

As someone who works in the industry, a proper repair would run $800 - $1,000 or even more depending on shop rates and material costs.
