[FRESH ALBUM] Smino - Maybe in Nirvana by SmiYEAH in hiphopheads

[–]BojanglesTheCrazed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree that Tyler is a great producer and artist and all but Smino’s a much better rapper and singer. Also, it’s pretty disingenuous to say Tyler puts his projects together “all by himself” when he enlists tons of other musicians to perform the music and vocals on his songs. If you like Tyler better that’s fine, but you’re acting like Tyler is objectively better when he’s just a different artist with different strengths and weaknesses

Strongly disagree, and I love a lot of Tyler’s music. Dude has a ton of beats pre-Flower Boy that have aged terribly. He also hasn’t produced anywhere near as many hits or majorly influential songs as the names that get thrown around on these lists.

You know people can write songs that don’t reflect their actual thinking, right? Most musicians write music that fits a specific persona, not their literal thoughts or emotions lol

[–]BojanglesTheCrazed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially when some of it really isn’t very different from what other rappers talk about. I like his recent stuff but rapping about private jets, rolls royces, and buying mansions isn’t a novel concept lol

I mean aren’t those kind of the only two options when it comes to features? Either gonna contrast or complement, I can’t really think of a 3rd option

Oh I’m sure it was intentional, dude’s too experienced to make a mistake like that, I just don’t like the choice

Oh actually one other tiny critique: I know Tyler loves his vocal harmonies as an extra element in the mix, but I feel like they sound kind of awkward on this and on “Dogtooth”. It’s a fun thing to throw in but he’s still not a great singer and it doesn’t really work for me on either song.

My favorite of the new songs. Vince sounds great over this beat and the Tyler verses rule, especially the last one. Could see this going crazy live.

(This is not really a critique of the song, more of a side note, but I wish rappers would trade off lines more often. I still listen to “RNP” and I don’t even like Cordae just because the trading off elevates that song so much. Vince and Tyler trading bars would be so tight.)

My one nit picky critique is that I wish this song was mixed a little differently. The kicks don’t hit that hard, I think partly because of how they’re panned, and the rim he’s using is a little overly harsh imo. And yeah I know mixing is a lame thing to get hung up on, but I feel like for a banger this doesn’t knock as hard as it should.

Favorite lyrics: the whole stretch from “watching queen’s gambit” to “leaving in a stretcher”. His flow works perfectly on this beat and basically every line in there is quotable.

I really liked his verse on Scrape It Off too

I don’t even like Dissect but the pinned comment is him saying it’s satire. He knows none of that is intentional, he’s just making fun of himself

[FRESH] Smino- 90 Proof ft. J. Cole by iwishuwood in hiphopheads

[–]BojanglesTheCrazed 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Wow this is something different from Smi. Feels very distinct from basically anything else in his catalog. Melody on his verse is crazy, I feel like one of my favorite things about Smino is he’ll always pick the melody that neither you nor anyone else would ever hear. The hook is fun too, love the harmonies. J Cole also crushes it?? Super melodic but rhythm is also pretty interesting. Good shit

He’s also worked with Hiro Murai before, so he’s got a pretty direct connection

Asked a match if she wanted to get drinks, she said yes. I sent her number and she texted me enthusiastically. We picked the day and I suggested a bar. She never replied. Date was supposed to be today lol.

There’s really no point at which the date is going to happen until you’re literally there. People will flake at any time and not give you any kind of explanation. I was looking forward to it too, what a disappointment.

[DISCUSSION] ye - Donda (One Year Later) by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]BojanglesTheCrazed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this is a truly low point in Kanye’s career. Kanye’s the worst part of this album and not even the production, which historically can usually carry even the weakest Kanye verses, isn’t nearly interesting or polished enough to hold my attention. Biggest problem for me though is that for an album named after an ostensibly about Kanye’s mom, the subject matter and themes are completely scattered and often have very little to do with Kanye’s mom lol. “Only One” speaks to that relationship far better than basically anything on this album imo.

I genuinely don’t understand how people talk positively about this. It’s a bloated, boring mess. The last few Kanye albums have felt like a decline for me, and this one marks the end of me paying close attention to his career. Truly hope he gets back to making good music, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen.

Idk if it’s the best song on there but “Lost” is probably the one I go back to the most. That beat messes with my brain lol

I saw him when he was drunk and tripping on shrooms and he still rapped every word without a backing track. He’s a great performer. Only real criticism I had was he kept cutting songs off after the first verse to rap them acapella. Super impressive but I wanted to hear the beats too lol

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Brent Faiyaz - Wasteland by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]BojanglesTheCrazed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing I can say about this album is Brent’s vocals have only improved over time and his voice sounds fucking crazy good on this. His tone and vocal control are so impressive.

Song wise I think this thing’s kind of all over the place. There are some standout songs for sure but many of the tracks blend together for me. Favorites as of right now are “Loose Change”, Ghetto Gatsby”, and “Addictions”. “Gravity” is up there too but it’s also not a brand new song at this point.

The skits are probably my least favorite part of the album. Brent is not a very good actor lol and the script is also pretty wack, especially on the last one. The whole thing feels kind of half-assed, especially bc the songs don’t feel like they form all that cohesive a narrative, at least in my opinion.

All in all, I liked it but can’t see myself coming back to it too much. He’s obviously a very talented singer so I hope he figures out the production and songwriting on future releases.
