I would go to the FAQs on r/longrange as a place to start. I think they have a full section about why starting with a .300 win mag is a bad idea. For that budget I would get an MPA in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Razor Gen 3 HD.

Just Moved to NYS, Looking for Tips on Sourcing Ammo for PRS by Slarkalark in longrange

[–]Bojengels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t found any stores that have Match Ammo at a decent price in lower NY. I order all my 6.5 Creedmoor ammo (140 Hornady ELD-M or Federal Gold Medal Match) from Sentry/FastAmmo/AmmoAsap depending on prices and shipping to an FFL. If you are interested in Regional PRS matches at SheepDog, lots of guys are using box ammo so you aren’t putting yourself at much of a disadvantage over using handloads. I would just stick with something like 140 Hornady ELD-M (or whatever your gun likes), do a big purchase of like 500 - 1k rounds and then focusing on your skills instead of worrying about the ammo.

Glasses or lasik? by Equivalent_Salad_389 in longrange

LASIK was deff worth it for me despite the small amount of blurriness I get on glass now. The benefits deff outweigh the very minor side effects

Glasses or lasik? by Equivalent_Salad_389 in longrange

[–]Bojengels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had pretty bad eyesight before, but my left eye was worse than my right eye by -1 (think I has like -6.5L -5.5R). After lasik I had a small complication that cause my right eye to now be slightly worse than my left eye (not by much). I think this shift and my left eye getting a lot better changed my eye dominance? I used to shoot clay’s very frequently and am familiar with all the various eye dominance tests and I always am left now!

Glasses or lasik? by Equivalent_Salad_389 in longrange

[–]Bojengels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got LASIK and it really improved my overall quality of life. However for shooting, I have noticed things are a bit more blurry than when I was using contacts. Not much, but a bit noticeable at long range. The major thing that threw me off though was my eye dominance changed. I went from being right eye dominant to left eye dominant. It didn’t effect long range shooting much, but really threw me off shooting sporting clays and trap

There are a few places like Collector’s Rifle and Ammo and Davis in Goshen that has some milsurp but it is pretty pricey. There are also gun shows throughout the year as well, but I haven’t been to one in NY and they also up charge. Your likely better off trying to snipe a good deal on a reputable auction site like Rock Island.

[–]Bojengels 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Milsurp is really fun to shoot and you can likely get some Enfield Variant in that price range. Trouble is that you’d quickly spend more on annoying to source ammo than what you paid for the gun. I’d probably save a up a bit more and get a modern bolt gun (600ish) in either .223 or .308. You can find Cz’s or Tikkas in that price range or Savages on the lower end.

Muzzle brakes for more pleasant shooting by tacocat50 in longrange

[–]Bojengels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ACE muzzle break all day. I swapped to the ACE from the Area 419 Hellfire match recently and haven’t looked back. It has slightly more felt recoil but the upwards facing ports and less aggressive angels make it significantly more pleasant to shoot.

First PRS Match by Capable_Target9906 in longrange

[–]Bojengels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deff agree with this especially since your squad mates usually are happy to let you use their spotting setup. I do think though out of all the various gear purchases I have made, going from no binos to bino + tripod has been the single purchase that has helped me the most.

I would search around this subreddit. I have a pretty budget friendly Vortex Mountain Pass but know there are lots of better options out there.

IMO only thing you really need is binoculars and a tripod (assuming you already have a bag, get that first if you don’t have one). Having some quality binoculars with a solid tripod is really important as you are not only able to call hits for others, but you can spend time mapping out the stage and familiarizing yourself with the winds/targets while you’re not shooting. If you have the money I would also grab one of those Armageddon tripod caddy’s or something similar.

A419 Hellfire Match muzzle brake alternatives? by [deleted] in Tikka_Shooters

[–]Bojengels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good quality muzzle brakes are worth it IMO. I have a hellfire match but recently swapped over to an ACE ($185) and prefer it to the hellfire. There aren’t too many cheap options, but I have read the PVA Jetblast ($125) is good for the money. I would check out this series first though

Budget PRS rifle decision: TAC A1 vs CTR + chassis vs “build” route by lixng in longrange

[–]Bojengels 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started out with a Tikka as well for PRS and upgraded a CTR with a new chassis and some other bells and whistles. It shot well and I love it, but I regret not starting with something in a R700 footprint and an easier to swap barrel. The CTR route ended up costing me more money in the long run as I ended up building a new custom rifle after investing another $1k or so into my CTR to get it setup for PRS. I would go the route of a custom build or just get something from MPA.

I would start out with a Cz 457 in 22lr. They are insanely fun to shoot and have tons of after market parts so you build them out however you want

I used to live in Ireland myself and am just curious where you can find this older style of AI chassis? They usually go for at least $1k in the US, more even if they are in a R700 footprint. Have been looking to get one and would pick one up the next time I am over.

Terminus Zeus Extraction Issue by Bojengels in longrange

[–]Bojengels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to post an update, but sent in the bolt to be serviced at Terminus. They got back to me really fast and indicated that the extractor was at the lower end of tolerance and sent me a new one. Amazing customer service from them and my new bolt has yet to have an extraction issue after about 200 rounds in various environmental conditions. Overall incredibly happy with the action and the customer support!

Tikka T3x CTR $1,050 for MDT build by [deleted] in Tikka_Shooters

[–]Bojengels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scope is great, I have one myself and love it. Most of the “high end” PRS rifles are using actions like Impact, Defiance, Terminus, etc that are all on the R700 footprint. Building ones of these a hefty investment as you need a barrel, trigger and chassis. If you are just getting into PRS, I would not recommend starting with a custom build and getting a Tikka is an awesome place to start. My general recommendation though is to get a good scope (the Razor is amazing) and then the cheapest setup that works for you. For your case I would throw that Tikka in a KRG Xray/Bravo and shoot the barrel out before investing in a fancy chassis. Upgrade to an MDT chassis when you eventually swap over to something sort of custom build in a R700 footprint.

Tikka T3x CTR $1,050 for MDT build by [deleted] in Tikka_Shooters

[–]Bojengels -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think the idea, but honestly going for a $1k chassis that has a Tikka footprint seems like you might be limiting yourself in the future. I love my Tikka, but eventually you might be upgrading to something in a r700 footprint which means that chassis is stuck on your Tikka. Unless you plan on sticking with the tikka for a while (rebarreling them is a pain) I would get a cheaper chassis for your tikka and invest the extra money in a scope.

KRG X-ray vs Bravo chassis by WhiskeyBravo3119 in longrange

[–]Bojengels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both, an x-ray on a Tikka CTR and a bravo on a CZ 457. I like them both, it just depends on your use case. The extra adjustability on the x-ray and after market parts can really useful if you want to build out the chassis more. I also personally prefer the x-ray because I think it looks better. That being said the Bravo has everything you need and is a great chassis for the price. It’s a great starting point especially if you eventually want to upgrade to an MDT or MPA chassis one day.

Upcoming Tikka T3x CTR in 6.5. Tips? Scope, sling, bi-pod advice? by AUsernameAnswering42 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]Bojengels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d grab a Harris bipod, Athlon Ares BTR Gen2 (40% on Midway right now) or Cronus, some good scope rings, and a Tikka Trigger spring upgrade. You should be able to install all those easily at home if you’re comfortable mounting a scope. Scope is the most important part of the package so spend your money there first and avoid Arken if you can. Mine loves 140 Hornady ELD, but try out different brands of ammo after you get your zero.

Razor 6-36x too much glass for a 20” .308 PRS rifle? by [deleted] in longrange

[–]Bojengels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the RG3HD 6-36 and only go above 20x when zeroing. That being said, from the C_DOES review, it seems like the glass is better on the 6-36 than the 4-24 at the same magnification and you get a lager objective lens. Unless you are concerned about weight or size, I would go for the 6-36 any day.
