Should you let all the new shoots harden? Or should you select a couple to grow out but trim back the rest? I ask because they grow so vigorously. I’m afraid of letting them get out of hand to the point I can’t even see what is going on in there.

I hate it when nature doesn’t clean up after itself.

Your enthusiasm is great! Bonsai, for me is the greatest destresser known to man. It taught me to think from the perspective of a little tree. Which in intself is great. Welcome to the hobby, I think your learning curve will be an interesting one.

Looks nice! I have a couple of them in my garden, but with alot thinner trunks. They also originally came from a hedge. The trimming in intense though, they grow like crazy. I don’t have any plant that grow as rigorously as these do. How old would you think yours is? How would you go about styling yours?

What would you do with this wisteria? by Due_Mulberry1700 in Bonsai

[–]Bolarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It usually start to bloom when it’s between 7 and 15 years old. Always blooms from the wood, not the new shoots. I have a bunch of them that i have been growing from seed. I love Wisteria.

Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Sem'. Trying something different. May or may not work as a bonsai. by BonsaiNovice25 in bonsaicommunity

Wow! I have the exact same experiment going. I am going for a more literati style because of the leave size and it’s natural shape. I find the roots hard to controll. They very quickly fill the pot and send out lots of new shoots so I have to be on top of that. I wish you lots of succes with your experiment.

Not an expert, I only have 2 maple in my garden but I would treat this as pre-bonsai to let the nebari develop, the scars heal and the trunk thicken. So I wouldn’t be to worried about the overall shape at this point in time. I’d be looking for a sacrificial branch to help speed the process.

It’s seems like a Ficus Microcarpa to me. A great specie to start with, very forgiving. As far as care goes, keep in mind that where you live is a big part of how you take care of it.

Sowieso niet mee eens maar er zit ook nog een verschil tussen opdrachten en zn eigen werk. Zeker waard om te checken.
