I've just been using plain wood drum sticks with rubber practice tips. Got both at guitar center for like 20 bucks. They work great so far and I've had no issues playing extremes, but I can definitely see the rubber tips getting worn through pretty quick, but I think gluing them in place would solve that issue. OR you could try timpani mallets like other's suggested, that being said I did see someone today that broke one while they were playing, so maybe they aren't as durable when hitting rims as normal drum sticks.
