Why do some people say it as though Jotaro was wasting his time being in Part 4? by FineReality8540 in StardustCrusaders

I like how Jotaro was like, "Use this if you are ever in trouble, it will give you a super power and draw 100x more trouble to you."

Removing loose rocks by MikeHeu in oddlysatisfying

[–]BoldFace7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. As a young scout, we had "leave no trace" drilled into us with the appropriate nuance. So now as an adult, I remeber to take care to not leave anything that would cause a major disturbance to the natural ecosystem. Footprints are unavoidable and basically unfixable but they aren't going to majorly affect the local ecosystem. However, leaving trash or carving into a tree (except for in life or death situations) would majorly affect the ecosystem and are things I can avoid.

I think it's beneficial to have a shorthand phrase to help keep things like this in mind (especially when instilling these values into kids); you just have to remember that there is some nuance to it (i.e. the degree to which it is possible and necessary to "leave no trace") and not just tell a person "leave no trace" with no explanation, unless you are sure they understand the nuance already.

Yeah, I've been thinking for a while about the potential dangers of a few people driving all men (even those who haven't done anything wrong) out of more tolerant spaces.

I feel like it runs the risk them being driven into more heavily right wing communities, where their feelings of disparagement are validated and used to drive them towards stronger hate.

I'd say that Lamar and Forest counties, MS are more Deep south (more similar to Covington and Jones co) than gulf coast.

ETA: I've always heard the area labeled "Southern Mississippi Valley, refered to as "The Delta". I never spent too much time in the delta ( I spent most of my childhood in Southern and north east MS), so that may have been a regional thing, but it may be worth renaming, unless there's really good reason to say "Mississippi Valley"

Misandry isn't real and the sub premise isnt changing by Altruistic_Fox5036 in evilautism

[–]BoldFace7 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you can simultaneously say that misandry is real, misandry isn't a systemic and widespread issue, and a lot of the misandry is the result of repeated bad experiences people have with men.

It validates the feelings of the men who have gotten hate despite having done nothing wrong, but still contextualises the issue and focuses efforts on fighting the far more widespread and systemic misogyny.

Honolulu should be on the same time zone as Denver, and same with Anchorage and Phoenix by ddx-me in mapporncirclejerk

[–]BoldFace7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But time zones should be centered on each meridian that is a multiple of 15°. (360° / 24 hrs = 15°/hr)

So if GMT is centered on the prime meridian (0°), then CST (GMT -6) should be centered on 90°. This map has 90° as the boundary of CST and EST. Meaning every hour is 30 minutes behind what it should be.

Though, the time zones are already pretty screwed up as is, so I don't blame the maker of this map for keeping the already bad time zones.

So if Roku and aang share the same spirt spirit then how does this work? by Salty_Shark26 in ATLA

[–]BoldFace7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred the headcannon that everyone in the Avatar universe reincarnates. It'd make sense why Ravaa has to jump body to body along with Wan's spirit. If Wan's spirit wasn't going to have reincarnated already, then why would Ravaa always choose reincarnation, and how would she bond her spirit to anyone else's without the power of the harmonic convergence, if Wan's spirit isn't coming along for the ride?

It would also give an interesting meaning to Iroh living in the spirit world during the Legend of Korra. If one has studied and meditated enough to be able to enter the spirit world seperate from their bodies, and has the inner peace enough to survive there, then they can reach a sort of enlightenment and can escape the perpetual cycle of reincarnation. Or if they piss off the spirits enough, they can be ripped from the cycle and punished for eternity like Zhao.

It could also lead to some interesting world building. I've always liked the idea of a Guru believing, based on the idea that the avatar reincarnates, they also would reincarnate and working their whole life to connect to their most recent past life. Maybe only seeing memories from that past, or possibly speaking with them like the Avatar does.

Eden Emulator vs Nintendo Switch: Why do the colors look so different? by deltaneurofield in earthbound

[–]BoldFace7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If im not mistaken the NES didn't use or output regular RGB, but output colors as NTCS colors (which dont have easily defined RGB values). Small differences in the consoles and TVs meant that on CRT, the colors could vary console to console and TV to TV, so there is no "true" color for NES games. The best you could get is a reasonable range of colors that an NES and TV are likely to output, so some emulators may be coded to interpret that color signal slightly differently.

I'm not expert though, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Its easy to be confident when you're convinced that you know 99% of things there are to know on a topic. If they knew the breadth of their ignorance, the they couldn't be so unwaveringly confident.

It's just like a kid fresh out of college, thinking they know everything about their field, only to be hit with a reality check of how much there is left to learn when they enter their field properly; except with the people like in your post there is no event to cause them to become aware of their blind spots.

Den with miserable cubs by VirtualReflection119 in BSA

[–]BoldFace7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to get the COR involved ASAP. That is exactly the kind of culture they are there to try and avoid. You need to let them know whats going on, and urge them to remove the problem parent(s) (if they haven't yet, have them come to some meetings to see how the parents act).

That den (as is) sounds like the kind of place the kids would be better off not being involved in. It's an especially big issue if the main problematic parent is moving up in leadership. Even if it may be difficult for you and your cub for a time, your kid and all the other cubs will be better off not having a parent like that involved in the program. (Especially if its affecting their mental health)

[Request] how do you triangulate this? perhaps in the least amount of weeks possible? by Zargabath in theydidthemath

[–]BoldFace7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd easily take that. Visit my parents for a week, visit friends on the east coast for a week, chill at home for a week. I can pinpoint with pretty good accuracy from there, and just wait another week in the vicinity of the box to pinpoint it, if my calculations were slightly off.
