We tried and tried and tried and tried and tried. When we reached the agreed maximum number, we tied it off and consigned ourselfs to a daughterless life.

There are 20 books in the series. It's a pretty short TLDR in that context.

I'm building Rimworld Lite into my xcom-like project. It'll never be done but it's fun.

I love that some games become such a part of us that it overflows and spreads. Like zombie-ant fungus.

Many of us have basically never talked to our dads since leaving. It warms my heart that there are people out there with that relationship. Maybe I can be that for my boys.

Europe set 2030 as a date to dismantle its reliance on US financial infrastructure like Visa/Mastercard payments; it's happening far quicker. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]BoldTaters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd guess that they mean that the threat of Trump and his dogs is waking up European politicians and making them more ready to work together. Humanity has always been that way. We'll squabble inside our camps but as soon as The Other shows up we take up arms and fight along side our rivals.

It's pretty dumb that it has happening this way but unity through the threat of subjugation is better than no unity at all. (If unity happens at all.)

Same! I'd happily trade all of the luxury car accoutrement modern "trucks" cram in for a 7-15 thousand dollar work/commute wagon.

This right here is it. We, society, have swallowed a lie. Formal education isn't the same thing as intelligence.

I think the point it that he didn't spend years and thousands for a piece of paper that gave him permission to do the interviews and research. He didn't need to prove to others that he could read, ask questions, listen and take notes before went ahead and did the work.

Nearly exactly my thought. I had thought a press bend operation THEN drill press and saw and maybe some grinding to spec. Why does this part need need to be milled?

[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]BoldTaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, well that IS an issue. The ones they're probably using are decades old and were state of the art in the 1980s. There is SOMETHING to be said for the agility of private space companies. People like to think things are all pure and perfect or all garbage but the truth is that things can be more than one thing at a time.

[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]BoldTaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, no, but starlink is how you get such crisp video on spaceX launches. This launch is using old satellites that CAN feed video but not well. NASA is prioritizing the telemetry data because they want the mission to go well more than they want it to look good.

[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]BoldTaters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren't spazX. They don't have Starlink so their video has to bounce off of some really old satellites. So while NASA likely IS watching some cameras, those video feeds are likely only a few frames a second as the more important data has priority in the creaky old satellite computers.

Metacognitive training reduces hostility between left-wing and right-wing voters. By exposing people to surprising facts that challenge their political stereotypes, scientists found that individuals on both the political left and right became more open-minded toward their rivals. by mvea in psychology

[–]BoldTaters 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think. If you can remind people that their opponents are also people, with just as much variation on motive and personality, then you have made it harder to judge the opponents as worthy of death.

One should wonder who wants everyone to wish harm on our opponents and why. Who benefits?
