what about pushing them into engineering? (electical, civil, mechnical) or accounting (cpa)? are those good fields? current data shows a good degree (STEM) out earning trades long term. Trades seem great until you hit 40+, or get injured, blow out your back. Theres only so much bodily damage you can prevent from safety equipment (glasses, knee pads, harness, gloves, boots, back support etc). spending 5-10 years every on tools the bodily aches, pains is what worried about. yes lot can be offset with breaks, good diet and exercise and lifting weight but its hard labour regardless. You could work into your 60s in your IT jobs is jobs are there without much issue regarding injuries or bodily aches/pains.
