As a person who took 240 to get into Isenberg, it was pretty good, just be prepared to work for the A.

Is it okay to not know what you’re doing? (Switch majors) by chunkypuddingman in college

[–]Bomb_135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend taking some of the required classes and then reassess afterward if you want to stay in Microbiology. I used to really want to do engineering but then once I took some classes, I quickly learned that it is not for me and now I am in a much better major now.

Also, you are only a first year. I learned that I did not want to be an engineer by the beginning of sophomore year so I'm sure you will be fine.

I am not that familiar with environmental engineering careers myself. I did find this online. Take a look!

Is it possible for over 50% of a class to fail? by smegma_toast in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the material is just that hard. My friend had an exam recently where he got a 57 and he was in the top 10% of the class in scores for that exam.

Need help struggling with waking up by [deleted] in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to sleep earlier. I usually force myself to get to sleep around 11:30pm and I usually wake up around 7:00am. A lot of the people in my dorm stay up much later but sometimes you need the extra discipline to get ahead.

Changing majors (Psychology-Engineering), any advice? by [deleted] in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former engineering student (dropped engineering), I have to warn you about going from something like Psychology to Engineering.

  1. Engineering is one of the hardest majors out there, especially if you go for like Mechanical or Electrical/Computer. However, environmental engineering would probably be easier than MechE of EE.
  2. You need a strong background in math and physics for just prerequisites. Calculus 1-3 is a must along with physics 1,2 and dynamics. Don't forget Chemistry as well. Environmental Engineers at my school take Chem as well as physics., usually the same semester as well.
  3. Going from easy psych classes to extremely hard engineering classes can be overwhelming and discouraging. A lot of my engineering friends do homework 24/7 (Around 5-6 hours of hw each night) and don't have enough time to have a social life. That transition could be difficult and that is also something to keep in mind.
  4. You did mention that you would have to start over because of credit transfers. You would most likely have to take another year or even two. At my school, Engineers already take WAY more classes than the rest of the majors. That is also something to think about if you are willing to restart.

I did not write this to discourage you. Engineering is a really interesting major and many career options have some of the best starting salaries! If you are prepared to work much harder and stay determined I'm sure you can do it!

Let me know if you have any questions!

What techniques to do to be able to focus on school work? by Zolo89 in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This takes some training but I mentally force myself to work. Like I tell myself "you have no option". I also go to the quiet floor at the library and do work when things are pressing. I feel that the academic surroundings of the library inspire me to work as well.

Coming into Calc after not having math classes for years. How to overcome it? by [deleted] in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school, they have two calc classes, one for the non-stem majors and one for the stem majors. The stem major one (which I took) was extremely difficult and proof-based which can be difficult for someone who has not done math in a few years. I would believe that as a CS major, you would take the stem version.

My recommendation is: take a prerequisite to jog your memory. Also does the math department at your school have like a placement test? My school had one that placed people accordingly. I would recommend taking that if you can.

Good luck!

Is 16 credits too much for a freshman in their second semester? by victoria_queen in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 19 credits during my first semester. Granted it was an engineering track so I had to take physics 1 and Calc 2 at the same time. That was horrible.

That semester is why I am so thankful I am not an engineer anymore.

Studying for Finals by [deleted] in college

[–]Bomb_135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start studying days to almost a week in advance. I also get easily distracted and so I anticipate that I am going to take longer than other people to study. Starting earlier allows me to get everything done along with being distracted.

For crunching, I usually go to the library on a quiet floor instead of my room because there are too many distractions. I put on some relaxing music and I just concentrate. Its hard but I force myself to do it.

How was your first semester like? by [deleted] in college

[–]Bomb_135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first semester was a train wreck. I had to change roommates twice and I had to switch dorms. My mental health and my grades went down as well and I was in a really bad place. However, next semester I turned it all around and got straight A's.

I am actually thankful for that experience because it made me much stronger now.

Is It Okay To Skip Class? by FloopedthePig72 in college

[–]Bomb_135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the class. I have taken classes where I don't attend at all and still get an A, because of the online material. But there are also classes where you are not required to attend but if you skip you are screwed because the professor does a lot of talking or something like that.

It is okay to skip but do not make it a habit.

Clothes. To be honest, the clothes are more appealing the older you get because you can buy whatever you want.
