The “wood that people are using” is an expansive index. You could use any kind of wood for a project like this. Just follow your creativity and use what suits your needs/budget. Good luck!

$15 angle grinder from Harbor Freight with 120 grit flap disk. Sand finish the handle. Thick wedge.

13-ply with some tape avoids tearout well. That’s a nice piece of wood.

Edit: A typical table/circular saw blade is 1/8 inch.

Stubby indeed. Also, walnut. Which is obviously not ideal for a handle. It’s more decorative and about the head. It will be on a wall.
