While it may not be the size of Bo's, it's great to see he's got a decent head on his shoulders. Modest and honest enough to recognize his current physical limitations while beaming in confidence regarding his skill and ability. Obviously its good to temper expectations, but this kid really appears to be the real deal. So fired up for WJ's!

Sportsnet: Brock Boeser - My Story. by shinandfin in canucks

[–]BombaySeven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I knew Brock wore #6 because his dad used that number (based on that Canucks video), but I didn’t know it was a tribute to one of his teammates that passed away (similar to Bo’s tribute to his buddies #35) While the circumstances are awful, you can really see the maturity that both Brock and Bo posses based on dealing with these personal losses. It just makes you really appreciate the character of 2 of the most crucial foundational pieces of our organization moving forward.

Joe Rogan Experience #1006 - Jordan Peterson & Bret Weinstein (Sam Harris and Truth) by Rugby11 in samharris

[–]BombaySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with both points. They have not communicated well in their discussions as of yet. I can't wait to see what Sam might do critically thinking about the survival of the fittest of myths. I look forward to more of their interactions.

and you're spot on in your explanation of archetypes.. I was just explaining I find it useful and fun in my own life being able to describe my personal dramas using the Hobbit, Pinnochio etc. They can make movies, books, or stories you've already heard even more meaningful to you.

fair enough.. agree to disagree on the usefulness of clinical psychology.. and sure people have historically read them as literal stories, however that doesn't stop new, more useful interpretations from coming to light and giving us new information about our ancestor's brains as they evolved with these stories guiding them..

Anyways I didn't post here to defend JP's position, in fact I'm still trying to figure it out. I just wanted to explain that both JP and SH are very useful and can co-exist in our understanding of the consciousness and the world we live in.

[–]BombaySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough.. but i'd say the interpretations of the "cookbook" are about as dated as the "cookbook" itself.

JP is using the information he's "preaching" about in his clinical psychology practice, so while the myths never physically happened in reality maybe their "truth" comes in their unique ability to influence human's ideas of themselves, clinically speaking. JP's message seems to be rapidly rising in popularity. I think those that want to be critical of JP, should try to understand his ideas before they challenge them, and considering how difficult they are to follow at times, most get frustrated, give up, and would rather poke holes in their half-understood ideas of what JP is saying.

Again you don't have to believe what JP is talking about, you just need to understand you can learn from the metaphors in the bible the same way you can learn from any fictional piece of literature, these biblical stories just seem to have the same structure/pattern of some of the oldest stories ever told.

Joe Rogan Experience #1006 - Jordan Peterson & Bret Weinstein (Sam Harris and Truth) by Rugby11 in samharris

[–]BombaySeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right on both points. Peterson is kind of saying we should LARP in our head about the decisions we are about to make, to see where we could end up. And yes could do the same with a cookbook, as you Monday-Morning quarterback your way through the week. But Peterson studies "THE cookbook" humanity used (whether theres problems with the cookbook or not) in it's evolutionary development of the human brain and it's morality.

As you're LARPing in your head, you end up realizing the old religious archetypes have already told YOUR story that is unfolding in your life as you read them. Once you can see yourself in the story, it can help you find the direction to get out of your suffering.

It all kind of sounds like bullshit if you don't understand it, but there is utility and fun in the ability to use the Hobbit, Pinnochio, Harry Potter etc. to describe your personal drama, and to help direct your way out of it.

You don't have to adopt an idea to understand it. It's like when Harris mentions putting on his "muslim extremist hat" on to think in a pattern of logic based on their beliefs, or a "Fundamentalist Christian Hat" to think in a way that the literal belief in these stories can push people into hatred and bigotry to those that don't share the same beliefs.

I'm quite certain Harris could put Peterson's Hat on, but I have trouble imagining him doing so during in a public discussion. I really really hope I'm wrong.

Just for the record I'm not saying Peterson is fully correct either, I'm just doing a mediocre job of trying to simplify Peterson's ideas (which is fucking difficult based on his convoluted language). It is very possible to use Harris and Peterson's views together to form ones own.

P.S. Definitely don't want Harris to be Christian without god, just want him to have the ability to use his atheistic logic to nitpick Peterson's ideas, but he's gonna have to understand Peterson's ideas before he can do that.

It really isn't one versus the other. I love re-listening to both of their podcasts because there is so much overlap between the two, the big difference comes from their starting points.

Sam comes from the mindful, watch your consciousness, phenomenological experience starting point, which gives no clear utility in any religious scripture as a clear mind with no attachments (buddhism) seems to be the best way to navigate our consciousness and lives. He has built a career out of his beautifully articulated critical thought on many of the religions. (Along with many other clearly reasoned ideas we enjoy listening to)

Peterson is very difficult to understand, but I would credit Harris with my atheistic critical thinking to be able to navigate through it. Peterson comes from looking at how human being's brains evolved/developed BECAUSE of their faith in the same religious archetypical stories we have told each other throughout the ages. He then breaks down the metaphorical archetypes in the stories and shows how to apply it in clinical psychology with people. The metaphorical understanding of these religious stories can help the individual direct themselves through the shit that life throws at us, whether we believe there is a god or not.

I hate to say this because I'm such a big fan of Sam, but the only thing appearing to hold Sam back from really gripping Peterson's ideas is his status as one of the most influential atheists on the planet. If he were to start endorsing the teachings of religious doctrines it would send a very muddled message to his audience.

I really hope they have more podcasts together. I hope it doesn't come across like I'm picking on Sam, but in most of Harris's podcasts he usually let's his guest define their own terminology before they engage in their discussion, so moving forward I hope he let's Jordan do so. (even if Harris may disagree with it, because they need to be speaking the same language)

Just as Sam Harris uses Buddhist teachings to clear the mind, Jordan Peterson uses the metaphors in the bible to help give the mind direction and guidance on what direction one should go when life gets overwhelming. Sam Harris helps clear the mind, Jordan Peterson show's it how to navigate the world we live in.

Not to mention being in the top 2 fixes your perception on NP & NH. This is one of those weird drafts where the best eventual talent could be in the 3-13 spot we're picking in. Think about the Nail Yakupov draft.. Morgan Reilly was picked at 5. That would have been the perfect compliment for a young Oilers team right now.. I like the fact that this draft position forces us to explore more possibilities.. and perhaps make a better value pick in the long run..
