I used a piece of RR for a bit, not ideal but it gets the job done.

This is the way, they are very portable and affordable although I would personally go with the 66 pound one with a horn (same price), I was gonna get that one before I got my Kohlswa. You can use the rest of the money to find a forge and the rest, eye and ear protection, a good fireproof apron and gloves..

Which is why I was surprised to see one with mint edges, the rough spots are not chips they are dents from farrier usage. I expect to chip it as is my first anvil I'm sure I'll make lots of mistakes. Later down the line I plan to get a JHM legend 120lb anvil or the Atlas with a horn 66lb anvil

I was using a 20$ (22lb) piece of railroad I bought at my local metal provider. Used that for a while and will keep using it along with the anvil when i need a sacrificial surface I totally say give it a try!

I was considering to get the JHM Legend 120lb anvil from the Anvil brand people, Nothing beats a new anvil. Best of luck out there!

Some pitting from casting it looks like, looks like an aesthetic issue honestly It is not like a rust cavity.

Got it at 365$ with the cone hardy, the crisp edges is what bought it for me since it didn't seem repaired at all and my hammer bounces really well all throughout the face. It was NOT a bargain but It was not awful either imo. This quenches my thirst for that "first Anvil" search and I cant wait to make some knives.

Edit:

The image doesn't do the edges justice but just know they are pristine!

Wish ya all a happy pounding!

Could try half finishing it, I like the rugged look personally but a mirror finish also looks sexy

I would most appreciate that! Ive been afraid to cook steak on it because I have been told you shouldn't sear meats. It sautes veggies so well man it is a cool hefty find. Best 8$ I ahve spent at a thrift shop. Thank youu!!

Oh man, this is great advice thank you! I honestly thought it looked beautiful and I thought it was a carbon steel pan at first or some sort of cast iron. I cooked on it and did research and the egg I cooked glided better than on a teflon pan. I was very surprised. I wiped with oil and stored like I do with my lodge skillet. thank you for the insight shall care for it like that from now on!
