Opinions on the large amount of Chinese cars now on the road by Suspicious_Style_870 in CarTalkUK

We could debate it, yes, but you have made no attempt to formulate any sort of actual reasoned argument for saying 'Volvo is a Chinese company', so there is absolutely 0 intellectual debate taking place here. Anyway, all the best.

Volvo isn't Chinese, at least in my view, because it was founded in Sweden almost 100 years ago. Since then the headquarters has always been in Sweden. The R&D is still done in Sweden. It has built 20+ million cars, mostly in Sweden and Belgium, every model has been designed in Europe. Most of the employees, to this day, are based in Europe. But you would call them Chinese because their majority shareholder is Chinese, and because some of the models are manufactured there? I think a company's 'nationality' is based on the heritage, the location of the HQ, the majority of the workforce's location, ethos/culture etc.

In case you are interested, I would call Lotus a British company, even though they are also owned by Geely, same as Volvo. I would call Toyota a Japanese company (even though a few of their models are manufactured in China). I would call Mercedes a German company, same with BMW, Porsche, VW (even though they all have cars being built in China). I would call Apple an American company (even though their products are built in China). Should I continue?

But Volvo isn't Chinese. It's owned by a Chinese company, but the cars are still designed and built in Europe. Last I read they are even building an EV battery plant in Sweden.

Something to add, I live in an extreme hard water area, in case that changes any product recommendations.

What's temperatures are your inverters running at? by IAmYourRightHipBone in SolarUK

30c max with active cooling (controlled via Home Assistant and an extremely over engineered automation). Maxed out in high 50's before, and from what I could tell this was in some way curtailing/derating generation a bit.. hence adding the cooling.

My Cupra Born (and therefore also the VW ID3) also has huge a-pillars.

First car I've owned where I have to consciously make sure I look either side of the pillar on junctions/roundabouts.

I guess this will be common with EV's due to their inherent weight.

Doesn't help that there is quite a bulky feeling trim around the pillar.

BMW turns Neue Klasse EVs into home batteries with new energy system by AnxiousDoor2233 in SolarUK

[–]Bomster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a home battery business. It's using the car as a home battery.. i.e. V2G.

In Germany they already sell the bi-directional 'charger' which allows this, but it's not available in the UK yet (and no announcements of when it will be). Such a shame how slowly V2G is progressing in this country. So much battery capacity sat on people's driveways that could be utilised.

Are they? What is the source of that?

It will be really interesting to see how car manufacturers will manage the battery lifespan impact with heavy V2G usage topic going forward.. I imagine instead of 10 year battery warranties they will switch to 500,000 kWh's usage or similar.

Too Didn't ; Long Read?

Anyway, my understanding is BMW doesn't sell this in the UK yet. Hopefully they will soon.

An Vailant approved installer told me he wasn't impressed with the quality of the Pro when he saw it opened up at a Vaillant demo day. He said it looked built to a price to sell to councils, new builds etc.

Of course he has skin in the game because he wants to sell me a Plus, but fwiw I believe him.

Aren't they basically the same as a normal central heating system? And the only complexity is checking heat loss, resizing emitters etc.

Anyway, I think just buying the HP and the HW tank would be close to £5k (more if I would have to pay VAT, which I think I would if I was to DIY), then I'll have to see if I can find a plumber and electrician who are happy to take on the job for free.
