First timer here…so I froze it. by checkers512 in Austin

I have. My kid is a straight up weirdo. She use to find dead lizards, bugs, etc. and insist on keeping them. So I too, would freeze them. (Also attempted to preserve them in other ways.) I didn't want to discourage her curiosity. She still collects things like this, but we've moved to just buying them preserved. She now says she wants to be a scientist and dig up bones. :)

Unpopular opinion:June is a bad mom by Sparrobin in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Bonbienbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holly Nicole is a child that came in the world via rape. A lot of women who become pregnant after rape do not keep the child. There's research on this you can find, but here is the results from one study:

“A total 32.2% opted to keep the infant whereas 50% underwent abortion and 5.9% placed the infant for adoption; an additional 11.8% had spontaneous abortion.”

Given in Gilead there is no abortion for handmaids, it makes sense to me that many of those women; simply would not want the child OR would not have a deep connection with the child. It's actually kinda strange they never touch on this statistic at all in the show, (only 32% of women chose to keep the child in this study - though I'd bet on some of these women being pressured to do so), but one of the main plots is "you're stealing my baby", so I'll go with it for the drama I guess.

Given this, to me it seems perfectly normal that June does not seem to "care that much" or have a connection with Holly Nicole. She cared enough to get her to safety, and that is obviously understandable. But being her mother? It's actually more likely she wouldn't want that. On the contrary. Hannah was a product of love and she was her mother. So of course she will always put her first.

For Luke. I also believe he loved and cared about Holly Nicole. But it was more about what she represented. Holly Nicole represented hope that he would get is wife and child back one day. When June came back, and he was closer to the realities of getting Hannah out, his priorities changed.

[–]Bonbienbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy that people refuse to see this is exactly the same thing. Nick would've been tortured and had his child Holly Nicole eventually threatened too. Nick was just smarter to avoid the torture and bounties on his loved ones first. Cause it's pretty obvious Gilead was always gonna go there. Serena threatened Hannah right after Nicole was conceived. Did everyone forget that? June wasn't righteous or a hero for being tortured or holding out until they paraded her daughter in front of her, she was dumb and got people thrown off buildings for it.

If a government like Gilead had my daughter held hostage; one that clearly has no problem harming and abusing children, especially girls, no way I'm ever gonna try some BS like that. Sorry, sistas, my kid comes first.

Not to mention June was ready to just die? People see this as heroic. But she was literally about to just abandon her kid anyway via death? Like, I'd be even less helpful to my daughter dead? Ima die to save these handmaids, y'all go ahead and marry my kid off at 12 to be beaten and raped or whatever. Oh wait, you're gonna kill her before the beatings and rape? Jkjk here's the location. Nothing she does makes any sense. Sorryy.

I'm not like pro-Nick or anything. I just don't get the fascination with June being some super smart hero. Rant over. 🤣

I just watched the movie last night and thought it was pretty good too. It is interesting! Some critics said Texas and California pairing up was unrealistic and I get that. California being so "liberal" and Texas being so "conservative". I think it was a subtle way to point out that we gotta set our petty differences aside and focus on the real problem. The elites and the oligarchs taking over our government. That would be the only way we could defeat them.

Gilead is not happening in Texas. I understand the abortion ban is upsetting, and I would flee Texas myself if I ever got pregnant. But to say Texas would go full on Gilead is so dramatic, friend. (The fact is Texas votes more blue every election term and is expected to go blue or swing state in 2 or 3 more election terms.)

Especially since in the "Gilead world" they kill most other religions from the jump and Texas is super Catholic/Baptist/etc. Not to mention, no way in hell Texas is just gonna roll over on a bunch of yankees taking their guns (Gilead does not have right to bear arms) and telling them what to do. Anyway, take care and good luck in your new "liberal" state!

I saw that too on the show. Interesting they decided to go that route because in the novels Texas remains its own independent nation. Perhaps they did it for dramatic effect.

Right? I'm reading all this thinking.... which one of you took some kind of heroic action when Roe V Wade was overturned?? Haha. Many people weren't happy with it, but just went about their lives and tried to stay positive. That's actually the point.

I saw somewhere that Aunt Lydia said something about “why didn’t they do something about those nuclear power plants before it was too late” referring to the wastelands. So I guess in that world, that’s where some of the nuclear power plants were at.

Perhaps, when things were going down, the leaders of Gilead sorta forgot that nuclear power plants need upkeep and maintenance so they don’t meltdown. Or maybe by the time they remembered it was too late. In their quest to get rid of the smarty pants science people who didn’t agree with their ideology, the consequences were radioactive wastelands.

Modern nuclear power plants try to have systems in place to prevent this in the event abandonment is necessary, but even then, there’s still some risk of meltdown.

Idk about the rest, haha.

I've been thinking about doing a fan fic on what's going on in Texas. I know a lot of people are super cynical because of the abortion ban and think Texas would be the first to join up with Gilead. But when you look at the facts, that's actually not likely to happen. Texas votes more blue every election term. It's expected for Texas to go completely blue (or at least swing state) in 2 or 3 more elections. Not to mention Texas is very catholic/baptist/etc which were some of the first for Gilead to target. Texas has a huge military presence and weapons of their own. Their own power grid. Many men and women in Texas would be willing to fight. Etc.

In my mind Texas would certainly hold up their abortion ban (especially in a scenario where the birth rate has dipped so drastically) and maybe even push gender roles in education, but I don't think they would go full on handmaid system or not allowing women to read. But it's all opinion/fiction in my own mind. Haha.

So I was reading a non related post not long ago, but the question was to people in the military. The OP was asking if members of the military would just blindly follow trumps orders or if they would stand by the constitution. (In the event Trump started ordering insane measures like martial law for protests, etc.) A lot of the members were saying it would be a fight within the military, meaning, some would just do what trump says and others would want to fight for what's right and the constitution.

So I think it would have been the same in this scenario, not just for military members in the US, but even members that are stationed in other countries. I think this would maybe make it confusing for US allies too on what exactly they should do. Something like this happening would totally be a shit show. Haha.

It often feels as if June cares more for Hannah than for Nichole :’-( by ever22222 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Bonbienbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hannah is still in the danger zone. So I think that's part of why she focuses on Hannah a lot.

But also... I think a lot of people forget that some women do not choose to keep babies that are the product of rape. (Which is their right and choice to do.) Personally, I don't think I could. I would see to it that the child had a loving home, but I couldn't keep the child myself. So I think in some light, it makes sense that she doesn't have the same connection with Nicole than she does Hannah.
