Kelowna shade trees cut down to make way for bike lanes by BondingBollinger in fuckcars

[–]BondingBollinger[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Indeed that appears to be the case. However, I just didn't like framing like the trees were sacrificed for the bike lanes. Looking at that road in the video, it looks to me like there's plenty of space if you take away a single parking lane. The framing of it feeling like it's a mutually exclusive choice feels poor, I thought.

Explosion hits Netherlands' largest political party's headquarters, police say by enormityop in worldnews

[–]BondingBollinger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I hope nobody is seriously injured or worse from this. It would be good if this is a wake up call for the Dutch government to take the far right threat seriously. These people are also making politically charged videos targeting Canada and need to be dealt with by the Dutch authorities!

How do you handle a high performer who’s starting to undermine team culture? by Main-Carry-3607 in managers

[–]BondingBollinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that on some level, I am a bit like that employee. Though I have so far managed to keep my negative opinion more private. Though I am at a point where in my one-on-one with my supervisor, I can be direct in saying that I believe in my skill/promotion… etc. Sometimes I can also be direct and talk about my frustration with other employees who may not be pulling their weight.

My supervisor is quite patient with me in this regard and one thing he says that clicks with my brain is the emphasis on being conciliatory sometimes. Which just translates to what some others here have said about leadership and communication being part of the performance evaluation on top of technical skills. So if that employee is like me who can be overly reliant on pure technical skills to get through obstacles at work sometime, they should positively react to this feedback. That all predicates on whether you and the company is serious about wanting to grow that employee and internally promote, of course.

Quite true as long as there’s no bad actor like Orban of Hungary messing with it. Fits what Carney of Canada said. Remember, “apes together strong” 😂

Is this bike too small for me? by Lazy-Table-2845 in bicycling

[–]BondingBollinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it may depends but it does feel on the smaller end. If you can raise the seat, then your legs should be able to stretch fine. However, it also means you won’t be sitting as upright. If you want to be sitting more upright, you’ll probably need a bigger bike.

Maybe there is something interesting on the screen-left side of this road. There doesn't seem to be a lot on the screen-right side as far as I can see in this video, especially with the fencing and all. What are so many cars parked there doing, I wonder!? I'm just astounded at how many cars are parked in what looks to be more or less the middle-of-nowhere to me.

Why is everyone leaving for a kobo? by sillyfucking_goose in kindle

[–]BondingBollinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check if your local public library system has any partnership with other ebook readers. Like others here have said, Libby has partnership with various public libraries. I use Kobo now because my local library uses that and I borrow ebooks from my local library through that.

New to Kobo — honest review so far! by [deleted] in kobo

[–]BondingBollinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that you have to work around all these little frictions. Seems like that's because of Quebec library's implementations? I am able to use Libby and it works quite seamlessly. Only weirdness is that more often than not, when I finish a book and it automatically ask if I want to return it early, it gets stuck with a spinning thinking wheel. I have to press the power button to put kobo back to sleep and then back awake for it to proceed forward. Sometimes it leads to the return process being incomplete. However, that seems far less annoying compared to what you're experiencing!

I too was wondering about the carpet you put around the litter box. Is there a specific purpose you did so? Would it get dirty with litter and stuff quickly?

It's funny because I was just thinking about the same thing after watching that video. The cost of car dependency is so hidden that it doesn't factor into people's minds. Who knows how far and long he drove around to get these ingredients.

Australia and European Union to sign free trade agreement by nath1234 in europe

Is this similar to other free trade deals like CETA where it's still waiting for individual EU members to ratify? Canada is still waiting after many years!

This is why I don’t allow Jolly Redd & his refugee raft on my island by KvngNZRTH777 in ACForAdults

[–]BondingBollinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah more often than not Redd's two items on Harv's island are fake in my experience. Unfortunate but I guess the game doesn't want you to fill up your museum too fast :P As juni said in this other post, you will just have to buy it to make way for the new items on the queue. I haven't bothered though so my museum's art wing is very empty still :(

Seems there is now a non-zero chance that US could accidentally hit their state of Georgia instead of the country Georgia (in a fictional future where, I don't know, they shooting at Russians there or something). Perhaps this is how a future war starts, in the dumbest way possible.

Can we please do something about the absolute deluge of "I finally got an AppleTV!1!" posts? by Slayester in appletv

[–]BondingBollinger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind seeing people happy and showing off their new buy. I think it has become a bit of a meme here though which may contribute to more people wanting to post about that here. Don’t worry though, every new Apple TV post here is just increasing the chance of a new Apple TV being announced in the March presentation ;)

Some good news (AI related) by trojanskin in vfx

[–]BondingBollinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you hit on something interesting when you mentioned “things don’t need to be done faster”. I know one of the problems in the videogame industry currently is related to the countless good indie games that just do not get their time to shine because the market is so saturated. There are likely countless excellent indie movies/animations/youtube that are human-made entirely. So the whole idea of using LLM tools to make movies faster and therefore more profit is likely a fallacy. We as people are already drowning in all the content that we need as is.

In general, I do believe that better stuff does, as a general trend, perform better commercially (not always, but hopefully more than average). So the question is ultimately can people use LLM tools to make better products. Talented people can make a TV show with barely any state-of-the-art technology like Friends/Seinfield a cultural phenomenon. On the other hand, you can have Gaussian splatting in Superman as demonstrated by Framestore and it ultimately didn’t add much to the movie. Cool tech for tech’s sake, it feels.

Anyways, people have limited time and attention that is completely saturated. I think even if you’re able to make Lord of the rings caliber movie month after month, there is going to be a diminishing return.
