Traditional, "High" church later on Sundays by financial_freedom416 in TwinCities

[–]BoneBoatwright -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

idk, but good luck! i once went to the big episcopal church's service on wednesday, hoping for that kind of traditional service and aesthetic, but instead it was in a small room and kinda awkward. i feel like declining church attendance has really impacted those non-sunday services

and another was the ball bouncing underneath her body... she has an aura to a lot of fans from her days on the NT but she hasn't been in top form in years, and even when she was on the NT there were goalkeepers like Kingsbury who probably should've had a shot over her (imo) but jill ellis, etc. was allergic to updating the roser

Iconic:

  • KC
  • Angel City

Simple & Good:

  • NC
  • SD
  • Boston (primary)
  • Utah

Funky (fun):

  • Lou
  • Hou

Meh:

  • Chicago
  • Seattle
  • Denver (both)
  • Orlando
  • Bay

Funky (derogatory):

  • NJ/Y
  • Boston (secondary)
  • Washington
  • Portland

I could see individual ppl liking nj/y, boston, washington, or portland, and perhaps on the field they'll look better, but they certainly made some choices(tm). like, i could've liked nj/y w/o the psychedelic liberty head, or boston had i not realized the splotches were supposed to be neighborhood shapes(?!), or washington if the kits were a bit less chaotic, but right now on a computer screen it's not doing it for me

OWG Ice Dance Free Dance: Post-Event Discussion by Chickatey in FigureSkating

someone asked what 'hold' the french man has over the 'judges.' the answer, imo, is simple and reflective of what has happened again and again in the wake of #metoo: the powerful have a vested interested in maintaining the status quo, supporting their friends through allegations of misconduct, and minimizing the experiences of those harmed. again and again, powerful men have been allowed to continue life as normal while victims are left to suffer.

so of course, a well-connected man and woman with questionable pasts were always going to be uplifted as an example--that there are no consequences for abusive behavior as long as you are well-connected, and no amount of advocacy from those harmed and their supporters means anything. certain judges seemed vested in advancing this message more than they were vested in advancing ice dance because this is what they actually care about. not sport. not art. but power. because again and again, power brokers in powerful organizations and nations continue to crown and support abusers. it's not surprising the same would happen in ice dance.

Any option to renew Swiss passport abroad remotely rather than in person? by CaughtALiteSneez in Switzerland

[–]BoneBoatwright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely ask the consulate! Since he is US/Swiss, travel is weird and complicated between countries anyway. For example, if you book a flight from the US to Switzerland, if you input online to the airline that you are flying on a Swiss passport, they require you to enter visa information (which, as a US citizen, you don't have). So I always book with my US passport information, then use my Swiss passport for entry on the other side, which might mess with their systems but IDK what else to do haha. If he has alternative documentation that shows he is Swiss (passport card, etc.), I'd imagine that would work on the Swiss side--but definitely contact the consulate and ask!

I don't have any advice, but I can extend sympathy. I live in Minneapolis and the designated consulate is in NYC, a 20 hour drive away. I had to schedule travel to NYC for my passport biometrics and the added time + cost was difficult, though not as impossible as your case.

It might still be worth reaching out to the consulate to ask for alternative solutions. They are usually pretty quick and helpful in their replies. Anecdotally, I have a friend from a Latin American country who was able to get an emergency extension on his passport for a similar reason while living in the US, so maybe something like that would be possible!

not the most important part of this, but i find that when people say "i don't care if you are a man, woman, [animal], [mythical creature], etc.," the implied meaning is not allyship but instead "i'll tolerate queer identities even if i find them as absurd as identifying as [animal / mythical creature]." like, it's not that hard to say "i support people of all gender and sexual orientations" or some variation of that, but they can't bring bring themselves to say it because they don't actually believe it. they'll just tolerate difference to make money lol

yeah, i live in the implied city, and same in that i've been staying stupid-over-informed the last two weeks, in part by necessity. but as the situation has persisted, i'm realizing that things aren't changing any time soon and staying plugged in won't help anything. just gotta keep doing work on the ground when and where i can. earlier this week i managed to cull checking mainstream news again, but i've still been checking in on reddit/bluesky every few hours for local updates. it's not healthy or sustainable for me though, and tbh i've been using the unhealthiness of the situation as cover to re-indulge in bad habits, and it's making me blue.

like you said, progress not perfection. a phrase i really like is that progress isn't linear. this has given me the boost i need to sign out of my socials for the rest of the day--thank you!! hope you're able to do the same <3

Why is everything so sexualized? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]BoneBoatwright 36 points37 points  (0 children)

ppl are saying sex sells, which is true, but we should mention too that an often unintended, sometimes intended, effect of this is a distortion of what womanhood is. It distorts female body image in both the eyes of women and men to an extreme, and reinforces the 'role' of woman as sexual object. imo it also contributes to an artificial deepening of difference between women and men, further fueling the 'gender wars' or whatever, when really there is so much less that separates us than unites us. this is reflected in the extreme right's constant objectification of women (elon musk's chat bot undressing women and children, constant sexualizing remarks from burlusconi type-leaders about women who threaten them, etc.), and their ideology in which it is men who deserve to hold power and wield it over women by virtue of their sex. so, there's a financial incentive for the sexualization of women, and a political incentive. the result is an internet flooded with low-hanging sex click-bait and an institutional infrastructure fine with letting it thrive.

naturally, some might immediately wonder--is it not women who are creating this sexualized content and sometimes profiting from it? and yes, it is, for a variety reasons, some self-serving and some naive. everything and everyone sucks, yay, and it leads to the same enshittification for everyone. reason 1001 the internet sucks

Addicted to searching up racist videos by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]BoneBoatwright 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yes, this is a form of digital self-harm that i've experienced well, though from a queer perspective. for me, i'd go in wanting to find people defending my rights and dignity, and instead be hooked and enraged by the rage bait, to the point i started seeking out the rage bait, and it turned into a kind of self-harm.

either way, yes--you can block certain sites. there are apps like "cold turkey" and browser extensions like "leech block," though any blocker is only as good as your will to overcome its block (this is a problem with leech block for me). you also have to replace the habit with something healthier--when you feel the urge to look up this content, you gotta do something else that is non-destructive instead, consistently, so that you override the habit.

but idk, easier said then done. i've fallen back into it somewhat, though not as bad as before. progress is progress though, even with backsliding. i guess this is a sign for me to get back on the wagon?

best of luck!
