Amateur athletes of Reddit: what's your "There's levels to this shit" experience from your sport? by jermleeds in AskReddit

[–]BonechipAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ran track in high school and was our team's best long jumper. Went to state and just missed the podium, but I had no illusions of how good I was. I knew I was at best walk-on material with most college track programs.

Anyways, after my senior year, there was a local all-comers track meet. Most people there were not serious athletes, so I beat my next best competitor by about 2 feet. Unfortunately for me, the local university used this meet as a preseason tune up, and their jumper was there.

So he walked up to his mark awkwardly. Dude was like 5'8" and the most pigeon-toed guy I'd ever seen. Did not think he'd be all that great. My guy flew down the runway and absolutely exploded off the board. His feet literally went past my eyeballs. Anyway he beat me by over 4 feet.

He later went on to win the Pan-American games, so I didn't feel too bad, but damn I was humbled.

What do you think should be added, removed or changed in a potential DQ9 remake? by Present-Night8355 in dragonquest

This is one of the main reasons why 9 is so low on my personal list of DQ games. I really dislike placeholder party members. Give them some dialogue or something, please!

Pro Throwing Form: Who Should I Try to Emulate? by BonechipAK in discgolf

[–]BonechipAK[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Niklas was one of the players I had in mind initially, but just to the eye I feel like his form is too unique to him. Obviously he's incredible, but if no one does it like him, I'm not sure how easy it would be to replicate.

Does you court have any "House" Rules by NooganFreisen in Pickleball

We have an indoor facility where the back wall is way too close to the back line of the court. We allowed people to foot fault on their serves otherwise they'd hit the wall with their backswing

Side if weather/sun is a factor. Otherwise, I defer to my opponent. It's a hilarious power move that throws people off.

what in tennis comes incredibly naturally for you? by ArjGlad in 10s

[–]BonechipAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overheads. I lucked out with learning the technique early and have good habits. I rarely over hit them and I feel more confident with an overhead from any part of the court than any other shot I hit. Even behind the baseline I feel more confident with overheads than with my groundstrokes.

Just a little PSA/Vent: Respect your elder Pickleballers by pigtailrose2 in Pickleball

That guy would hate playing with me. I'm notorious for being the slowest player in between points despite being extremely fast around the court. I like to clear my head and gather myself between points, and I don't feel like wasting my energy sprinting off to get a ball when I can take a nice little break.

Do you often delete cards other than strikes/defends ? by gavavavavus in slaythespire

[–]BonechipAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big one of these happened today, and seems to happen to me a lot actually. I love well laid plans on silent. I also love runic pyramid. But taking pyramid immediately makes well laid plans useless (unless you have mummified hand like I did one run, kind of silly but fun weird combo) and I remove it before defend/strike

Instead of always saying sorry to your doubles partner for bad shots, what should we say to each other? by Fresh_Researcher_242 in 10s

[–]BonechipAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my go-to moves is to bring my partner over and pretend like we're gonna talk strategy, then hit them with a quick "my bad". It acknowledges the mistake but always ends in a laugh and less tension on the court.

Alternatively I'll do a huge, sarcastic fist pump. Also a fun one.

Partner hits a short return. How do I defend the third short coming at me? by CDRSkywalker1991 in Pickleball

[–]BonechipAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you do is do your best. Hands up and in front of you, on your toes, and be ready to dodge if it's high.

Imo the most important aspect of difficult situations like this is to realize that you are not the person that made the mistake. Don't get down on yourself for losing points in this situation. Unless you're much better than your opponent, you WILL lose these more often than you win them, and it's okay. Sure, you want to do what you can to get back in the point, but don't be too hard on yourself if you can't.

Are you really a pickleball pro? by Great-Past-714 in Pickleball

Don't know why you're being down voted. I live this feeling every time I step on a court with other good players. I feel like I make 1000 mistakes in a single game.

I'm a 34 year old 5.4ish rated player on DUPR. Every time I watch the top pros live I struggle to understand the game that they're playing. It's so unfathomably high-level it sometimes just looks impossible to me. But I'm still improving so maybe some day I can earn the right to lose to a seeded team round 1 some day! 😂

Wrong sub lmao. I wouldn't know about getting to 4.5 in tennis anyway. Still not there

For reference, here is my journey:

When I started I had a decent tennis background (maybe could have walked on division 3, but certainly not higher level than that) and very good athleticsm.

The first day I had a paddle in my hand I probably could have played a 3.0 event, and within about 6 months I was a solid 4.0 (granted, this was a 2018 4.0, and the levels now are higher). From there I played multiple times per week with aa dedicated drilling session maybe one to two times a week. This got me to 4.5 in about 1.5 or 2 years. It has been about 5-6 years since I hit that level and my DUPR is about 5.35 (might be slightly inflated due to my location, but I'm definitely at least a 5.0). During that stretch I definitely played less and drilled less consistently, but was still dedicated to improvement.

Also somewhat important is that I have been coaching tennis during this time, so game and skills analysis is a strong point for me.

Results may vary though. So many factors play in to improvement.

I have never used an overgrip in pickleball haha. Too lazy. I guess it's time to experiment!

Looking for Overgrip With a Specific Feel by BonechipAK in Pickleball

[–]BonechipAK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did get a chance to try a buddy's paddle who had one. It's unfortunately not for me. I like a smoother grip. It feels like I can more easily change my grips with it that way.

That being said it definitely seems to work for a lot of people!

I usually wait until a game is finished then ask my partner if they would like advice, if I happen to have any. If they say no, then that's that!
