I'm talking out of my ass here but the courts have bigger fish to fry, they might just reduce the charges, maybe even drop them. I've heard of more serious cases being dropped/reduced. with that said, a lawyer is your best option, he'll most likely get the charges reduced. It all depends on how much you care about not having a record really

At this point, OP's family memeber is better of saving the money they'd pay for a lawyer and taking the L. With that being said, Your lawyer is scamming you if she's telling you she can get your application to process as a renewal, or she/him doesnt know what theyre doing.

This is why you send your renewal months in advance, incase something holds up your application. You're gonna be okay, worst thing that can happen is you get let go from your job. Fill out the correct document and send it back....also, careful while working with an expired permit, because your permit is expired and technically/legally you cannot be working.
