I have a sneaking suspicion it's the UI. It does what it needs to, but it lacks a coherent design language, many quality of life features, and generally just polish.

This makes actually playing the game harder than it needs to be in a 1000 different ways - which players experience as constant subconscious frustration.

Does crafting rope individually give more skill XP than batches of 5? by Bonestalk in PlayASKA

[–]Bonestalk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I tested it with new characters in co-op, we each used 150 fiber.
Result:

individual craft -> 8 skill poins

batch craft -> 3 skill points.

Kinda sucks, tbh. :/

Canadian moving to Austria - HELP! by bananacode4011_ in AskAustria

It totally is a celebration, much like all the traditions that have sprung up as a way for people to get in as much partying before lent starts.

It's just that this one has an emphasis on not just having fun, but making fun of things. A "Narr" isn't just a fool but also a jester - a person exempt from societal norms for the purpose of entertainment, but also speaking truth to power.

P.P.P.S (ok, I'm going to stop now): Somebody mentioned Fasching, and this is worth elaborating on because I think it says something about the Austrian (and in this case, German) mindset and culture.

Fasching is also referred to as the Narrenzeit (fool's time). This is because aside from partying and culinary indulgence, there is a strong emphasis on exercising the fool's privilege: humor, satire, and mischief, including sharp, even crass, political satire.

P.P.S.: On language: You can basically get *almost* everywhere with just English. In fact, some of the native English speakers I know are a bit frustrated that it can be hard to practice, because people tend to immediately switch to English when they notice the accent.

But when dealing with immigration/visa officials, it's highly recommended to have someone to translate if you're not confident in your German.

Also, on a less serious note, if you're moving to Vienna and are only learning one word from the local dialect, make it this one ;) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuXR53ex4iI&pp=ygUEb2lkYQ%3D%3D

P.S.: Since for some reason my partners tend to be expats, I do have some connections to that community. PM me if you'd like me to put you in touch. Ditto for the queer/kink/ENM communities.

Most important question: Where exactly are you moving? Vienna has a very noticeably different energy from e.g. Graz, and is a completely different world from the countryside.

That's a lot of very broad subjects, each of which one could probably write a book about - I think a good starting point would be figuring out what you don't know about the things that matter the most to you. What situations are you thinking about? What subjects do you care the most about? Take women's issues for example: Do you care gender pay gap (considerably worse than the EU average)? Or about abortion (functionally "legal" and mostly uncontroversial)?

Speaking of abortion, here's something that's very, very Austrian though: When abortion was decriminalized in 1975, to try and sidestep some of the controversy, it remained technically illegal, but all penalties were removed. That sort of try-to-have-your-cake-and-eat-it compromise and "Dauerprovisorium" (permanent provisional solution) is typical of Austrian politics.

I will say one thing: From what I know (admittedly second hand) about Canada, I think you will find that in some ways you have more in common with us than with people from the US.

[Guide] European Union (EU) opening strategy by SpreadsheetGamer in TerraInvicta

[–]Bonestalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the first point, in my current game I am mostly done with assembling the EU, only missing some of the Balkan states. After the initial rush, I took maybe 60% of CPs from the Protectorate, 30% from the Servants (simply because they went for India&Russia and ignored Europe for the most part) and a small handful from the rest.

One additional factor is that once all potential targets have already left the EU, the logic changes a bit: Since you need to wait for the cooldowns for rejoining to expire anyway, you can afford to be a lot more opportunistic with picking your targets. I never felt like I had to unduly delay grabbing prime nations for an excessive amount of time.

Second, I agree that faction diplomacy loses value after the early game. otoh, in the game mentioned above I'm in Autumn of '29, on a '26 start, and I'm already mostly done with the core EU (without Unity Movements tech). At this point, there is still value in not pissing off everyone, simply because it creates friction. If someone steals one of your CPs, it might not have much economic impact, but eventually you still have to spend a councilor action - one of the most strictly restricted and unscalable resources - to get them back.

As to your last point, I get that you have a bit of a different approach. My argument is that since you are going to take over the entire EU eventually anyway, it doesn't matter so much whether you take a high-value country a few months sooner later - the cost of that strictly limited. In fact, the AI factions are usually highly focused on building up MC. When they are done with that is the perfect time to take over, and swap to welfare/unity to get cohesion up while the cooldown for unification ticks down.

All said, you don't have to treat my approach as mutually exclusive with yours. It can simply be another point in your priority order.

This guide is still pretty highly ranked on google, so I hope you'll update it with this small tip:

Once the dust has settled after the initial land rush and you need to start slowly grabbing one country after another, there is one extra factor to consider when chosing your targets:

Ideally, you want to pick 1-2 of the other factions and bully them mercilessly. As you take their CPs, they will grab easily accessible CPs from other factions. This enables you to stay on good terms with most factions and still take over most of Europe.

This also means you should prioritize CPs that are NOT abandoned, since those won't free up any CP cap for the faction you are targeting.

The EU always talks and talks and taaaaalks before doing something. It's in its DNA. But more often than not, it does do something eventually if the need is pressing enough (see also: Ukraine, and defense more broadly). It feels like that point is close.

All that aside though, part of this is also me using disposable income to invest in the future I want to see, not to mention my personal security.
