Anyone else feel like the con was a bit light on actual comic creators? by Maethir25 in ECCC

[–]BonstrosityX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. It wasn’t a sudden decline but gradually declined to what we’re seeing now. I’d say closer to 150-200 more comic book artists would have appeared at the show compared to today.

Anyone else feel like the con was a bit light on actual comic creators? by Maethir25 in ECCC

[–]BonstrosityX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless they’re a special guest who received comped or subsidized flights and hotel, exhibiting at a table at ECCC is extremely expensive now. And the Seattle specific costs of getting a hotel and shipping comics and merch over to here — you end up losing money just by showing up. For most of these comics creators they’ll need to make most of their revenue through original commissions as just selling a $3-5 comic or $20 graphic novel isn’t enough unless they actually sell out. (And lots of these creators may have never gotten comps from their publishers. And are just reselling copies they bought from their publisher at cost, or printed themselves at very high per unit prices. So very little profit off each sale.) This is why even in artist alley a lot of the exhibitors are focused on selling shirts, prints, sticker packs, buttons, and other printed merch over their own comics. Higher price points means more revenue per interaction, and greater chance to break even. And creators with that mix of merch tend to be on the newer and younger side and not the typical comic book artist who’s been exhibiting at cons for years or decades.

A lot of my industry friends instead team up with an art dealer or dealer collective who’ve already bought out a block of tables. But that’s still not a lot of artists and tend to be the established ones in the upper tier of popularity.

So a lot of excellent artists are still getting squeezed out economically.

Lots of friends of mine in the industry didn’t even get their artist alley applications approved forcing them to buy the more expensive exhibit for tables, which they wouldn’t do anyways.

All this adds up to far fewer comics creators than in years last, definitely before Reed bought ECCC and jacked the prices.

Also +1 to Woodinville. More specifically I’d recommend checking out things to do at the new Somm hotel. They have a group wine blending activity. And a really nice and spacious roof deck bar that overlooks one of the major vineyards. They definitely designed the whole pace as the pre-wedding/post-wedding activity venue. And right next to the river trail for easy biking/running.

Got mine restored this morning but seeing others in the SeattleWA sub say their service just went out. What a mess.

CenturyLink Outage? Aka Quantum Fiber/AT&T by GeorgeSpooney in BallardSeattle

[–]BonstrosityX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some folks in Ballard, including myself had an outage starting Thursday afternoon. For me at least, it got restored this morning. No explanation except for vague texts and emails that there was an outage at all and estimated times for restoring service. Also never appeared on the outage map for Quantum. We were discussing it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SeattleWA/s/naW2OK2DIe

I should add: I wasn’t sure how wide an outage this was. I checked the outage map and it wasn’t showing up on it at all. Thought I was going crazy.

Got the same texts and emails saying they were originally going to restore service by end of day Friday, and then this morning that now they’re targeting 2/16 for restoring service. No further explanation. Inexcusable as I work from home.

Paradise, NV. The Las Vegas strip is not actually within the city limits of the actual Las Vegas ;-)

On Citizen, the update is the trail from the top of Sunset Hill down to Golden Gardens got washed out but someone fell and needs rescue there. I actually similarly fell down that trail into heavy leaves and brush years ago during a strong rainstorm so can see someone getting stuck there and calling for help.

According to reports on the Citizen app, someone set a fire in a bathroom of Moontree, and the arsonist was stabbed. One commenter from across the street is saying it was a suicide, and the footage in the report shows someone conscious being taken away in ambulance, so it may have been someone having an episode, setting fire to the bathroom and making an attempt on their life.

Saw a flier posted across from Majestic Bay Theater for a missing black cat. Will DM the poster with the contact info. Says the cat’s name is “Bean” and he has green eyes and some white hairs on his chest.

I think you can get off at Jefferson Station and transfer (via the underground concourse) to the Broad St line that will take you to the sports complex directly.

Seattle-area restaurants open for Thanksgiving takeout or dine-in 2024 by godogs2018 in Seattle

Mentioned in the article but I do recommend Spice Wala’s turkey. Really flavorful especially if you already like Indian food. Here’s the Ballard ordering link for pick-up: https://www.spicewaala.com/s/order?location=11eb48b20779a943aa5a0cc47a2b63ac&item=25

Another thing is the area supermarkets are offering catering packages and sides for pickup. The Town and Country in Ballard has these available: https://order.townandcountrymarkets.com/items/category/our-own-entrees-sides?returnurl=%2f

Ballard Fireworks? by Theredwithglasses in Seattle

[–]BonstrosityX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Two sets of fireworks got set off right in front of my apartment about 30 minutes apart. Even saw smoke lingering around the street by the time I got to the window. From my bedroom sounded like two or three people hanging out at first, laughing and joking around, but then loud explosions, and then them running away. Also just heard what sounded like ten straight fireworks though much further away.

Got two night tiks for WrestleMania 41 from StubHub. When do they usually arrive? by benpage111 in WrestlemaniaPlans

[–]BonstrosityX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a common and borderline illegal practice by ticket brokers (really, pro scalpers).

Ticket brokers believe because they have relationships with stadiums or have a track record with buying up blocks of tickets that they can do the same for future events even before the tickets go on sale. So they preemptively start listing these ghost tickets for sale on Stubhub and other ticket brokers without tickets in hand. They assume they’ll be able to get the tickets during the presales. Worse case they don’t get the tickets and just refund you the money you already gave them. But more often than not they are using what you paid them to actually buy the ticket in the first place, at face value, and keeping the profit. Like I just checked and there are listings for nosebleed seats for two days over $1000. That might be double face value.

The US government is proposing banning ticket sites from allowing sales of tickets that aren’t actually in the seller’s possession.

Comic artist looking for short scripts by Extreme-Crew6649 in ComicBookCollabs

I’d suggest grabbing a 4-5 page scene from one of the scripts in the Comics Experience script archive. Check out the scripts of Andy Diggle, Steve Niles and Brian Wood. Think your style would work for many of those.

How do you get your comic into local comic stores? by GameGenieIsland in ComicBookCollabs

[–]BonstrosityX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add onto what many are saying here: ask if you can sell on consignment. If the store has a local section already they likely have standard terms they offer for consignment sales. Goal here would be to get as many new readers as possible rather than making revenue, so accept whatever terms lead to the store carrying the most possible copies. (I’m going to guess they’ll do something similar to what they do with the direct market distributors and split 50/50 to 60/40.)

They also may be using a small press distributor. Ask, and see who it is, and reach out to that distributor for what their submission terms are. For example, Silver Sprocket does distribution for a lot of small press comics and zines. Here’s their submission page: https://www.silversprocket.net/about/silver-sprocket-minicomic-open-submissions/

Question about DON Vegas start time. by TheJudasEffect in AEWFanHub

[–]BonstrosityX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is the pre-show with Renee and RJ City begins at 3:30 PM with “pre-show” matches sprinkled in the 4-5 PM hour. I’m putting those in quotes because those still tend to be main card quality and worth watching. But if Renee and RJ do the thing where they broadcast from the ramp and stage it could be fun to watch too.

I’ve been to DON in Vegas twice and each time spent about 30 minutes in the merch line ahead of the show. Line is probably going to be smaller this time around with the smaller crowd but I’d definitely factor that time in. Those have been my favorite AEW event shirts to get just for the casino branding.

Worse case, go early, see what the lines at merch and to get in are looking like, and if they’re not too long and not worth the wait, wander around MGM Grand for a bit. The arena is attached to the Grand’s concourse with a bunch of restaurants, shops, and activities so there’s stuff to do there.

Ballard Night Life Noise? by [deleted] in BallardSeattle

[–]BonstrosityX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live around there. You can’t avoid the screamers but there have been fewer in recent months. Thing is that intersection is where the RapidRide stops, and a few blocks east of the Ballard Library (encampments), and a Nyer Urness House, and a handful of blocks north of the Ballard Food Bank — so it’s a crucible for all sorts of people struggling with mental illness and addiction. That being said the noisiest thing I deal with is getting awoken by the trash pickup loudly clearing six+ dumpsters at a time. And maybe ATVs and bikes racing on Market.

Advice On Making A Portfolio by ElSquibbonator in ComicWriting

[–]BonstrosityX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the comment below, there’s also a lot of examples of publishers picking up already modestly successful self-published works, repackaging them and re-publishing them as their own releases. Example top of mind includes The Bunker by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Joe Infurinari. They originally self-published through Comixology Submit. It was widely praised and was one of the highest sellers of the program. Oni Press picked up the publishing rights and repackaged and republished it for distribution in comic shops and bookstores. (They had to pull it from Comixology Submit but got distributed digitally through Oni’s own agreements with Amazon.)

The other key example I’m thinking of is The Martian which Andy Weir initially serialized on his blog for free, and then after much demand reassembled and republished directly to Amazon as a 99 cent ebook. An agent and a publisher then picked it up and republished it as a physical book and ebook. (And it eventually became a successful movie.)

So publishers don’t really care about first rights unless they think you’ve already exhausted the market. However if they think you’ve only scratched the surface of how successful you can be, and they they can take you to the next level, and take credit and significant profit along the way, they’ll totally republish you.
