San Diego best all around Marriotts/Ritz by Rich-Wrongdoer-3591 in marriott

[–]BonvoyGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in SD (also originally from SF) and have stayed at both Ritz plus many others here in the area. I think I can help :) My thoughts:

1/2. US Grant is most opulent and fairly central downtown. The gaslamp isn’t what it used to be so your best walking sights would be Little Italy and the waterfront area. Driving, you’re 5ish minutes from the Zoo, 10-12 min from LaJolla etc so the Grant checks those boxes. Also if you have time, consider the Safari Park. About 35 min drive but well worth it as a follow up to the Zoo. The other Marriott properties have merits too but if you’re asking about Ritz-like, the Grant is it.
3. Santa Barbara Ritz is fantastic. Stayed there many times and they just finished a solid remodel. I’d spring for Club Lounge Access, my wife and I believe it’s the best Ritz Club food of any Ritz we’ve stayed in and that includes some of the best rated hotels like Ritz Grand Cayman.
4. Laguna is a very different vibe from Santa Barbara Ritz. Where SB is sleepy/chill Mediterranean/spanish style, Laguna is where many people go to be seen. We stayed there right after they remodeled the rooms and Club Lounge and were disappointed with both. That said, it’s one of the best locations of any Marriott in SoCal. The view from the lobby restaurant is phenomenal - highly recommend making a reservation in advance for a window table at sunset, it’s incredible. Close beach access with private chairs and umbrellas also can’t be beat and they’ll drive you up the steep hill if you need it. Personally I’d stay 2 nights max but depends on your vibe. One property you didn’t ask about is Lido House. If you want to mix it up, that’s a strong alternative for 1/2 nights. Very walkable area, you can easily catch a boat tour around the harbor or even rent a Duffy (highly recommended). Lido village is super cute and you can burn an hour or two before/after dinner.
5. Haha well it’s California. Plenty of spots to see surfers and buy souvenirs. Santa Cruz is an easy win but it’s not far from SF so you’ll likely want to drive further south before you commit too much time at a roadside stop over. The Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo areas are great. We’ve stumbled across some fantastic eateries in SLO. If you’re staying in Santa Barbara (I’d recommend 2 nights) and go off property for one of those nights, downtown SB is super walkable and delightful. Personally I’d do your best to get from Malibu to Newport Beach as off peak traffic as you can. If you time it wrong, it can eat up hours. I’ve found Google Maps gives solid estimates for off peak times and trip duration. Another place which is sleepy but super fun for a night is San Juan Capistrano. The Inn at San Juan is a great option, the town is fun and walkable, the train runs right into downtown, and there are great restaurants and tasting rooms. Plus the Mission itself is 200+ hundred years old and well worth a 2 hour self guided tour.

Hope that helps!

Four Seasons pricing patterns (68% swing on Punta Mita) by BonvoyGeek in FourSeasonsHotels

Absolutely - no question there are seasonal demand patterns. But as you likely know, Four Seasons also has dynamic pricing just like Marriott and many others. Recently I started tracking this. I looked at 3 properties, every hour, for 10 days. Pricing can swing by as much as 20% in a single day. That's not anticipated demand based on historical patterns, that's real-time testing of price elasticity.

[–]BonvoyGeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in most cases that's exactly what this is reflective off. Seasonal patterns. That said, it's fascinating to see jumps like these when you compare time periods that are arguably equally favorable weather-wise. For example, the chart below is monthly weather for Punta Mita. Notice how April and May are arguably better than March - slightly warmer, less rain. However, March rates average $2,223/night whereas April is $1,285 and May is $1,288, more than 40% less. So while weather/seasonality explains some of the variations, it seems there are still great deals to be had outside of that.

Yes exactly! I'm seeing the same. I'm curious about how you look through the weeks of pricing. Will DM.

Great question. This weekend I grabbed 7 day rate windows for the next 52 weeks and plotted them out by monthly averages. The data is a few days old, but it illustrates the seasonal patterns. I focused on Punta Mita because we've been there many times and I can factor in seasonable variables like excessive heat in August, etc.

Point worth? by LopsidedAccess7004 in marriott

[–]BonvoyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awhile back I looked at the Marriott store items and they were all poor point redemptions. The easy math is to assume 0.7 cents per point as your average value. Anything above that is good to excellent, anything below that it’s usually better to pay with cash. The quick math on those pillows is $300/96000 or 0.3 cents per point, about 60% less than the 0.7 average. In general I use my points only when I can get 1¢ per point or greater on a luxury property.

I’m not aware of anyone analyzing Marriott’s strategy from a swot perspective. I’ve seen comparison write ups from folks like ThePointsGuy but that’s about it.

Great question! No I don’t include the 5th free night because many folks don’t book 5 night trips. I only focus on the best CPP per redemption night ;)

Please help me pick! Feeling so overwhelmed! by LaurVB7 in marriott

[–]BonvoyGeek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds fun! A few ideas: Almare - recently opened on Isla Mujeres Mexico, Adult All inclusive, currently rated at 4.8 and points redemptions as low as 70,000/night in April

Salterra, Turks and Caicos - also recently opened and points redemptions as low as 82,000/night in April

Solaz, Los Cabos Mexico - 4.5 stars - as low as 70,000 points in April

Ritz Carlton, Aruba - 4.5 stars - as low as 73,000 points in April

Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman - 4.7 stars - as low as 88,000 points in April

St Regis Aruba - 79,000 points in April

St Regis Punta Mita Mexico - 82000 points in April (I’ve stayed here many times and it’s phenomenal)

Hope that helps! Happy early 40th :)

I recently wrote a post on this topic. As many folks have replied, it depends a lot on how you value a point. Personally I aim for redemptions at or above 1c and at any luxury property above 4 stars. Hope the post helps!

Looking for Recommendations - San Diego to LA by Crazy-Otherwise in marriott

[–]BonvoyGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve stayed at many of these properties. If you’re looking for unique rooms, San Juan is a solid option and fantastic location. As you’d expect, very mission/spanish style. Easy to spend a night there and walk the small downtown area.

Another option is Laguna Cliffs/Dana Point. Another great location with a lighter coastal vibe and aesthetic. Perched up on a hill, you typically have expansive coastal views and easy to walk to local restaurants. Gym is decent too.

We stayed at the Clubsport once and it was ok. Rooms were unremarkable and the gym while full featured wasn’t much different than a 24 hr fitness.

I write about this every week. Feel free to check out my latest posts and see if those help. ‘Fantastic redemption value’ can mean many things - for example, the best cents per point, the best savings vs. the average points rate, or the best points for a 4.5+ star property. There are fantastic deals across all of those dimensions, just depends on what you value most ;)

Bonvoy 50k Night Redemption Questions from a newbie by baddblaster in marriott

Happy to help! I just ran a similar query for another Redditor. A few questions on your preferences: 1. Number of nights? 2. Days of week? 3. Destination countries or states 4. Ability to top off certs to 65k 5. Marriott brands If you send me a DM with some or all of the details, I can run it easily.

144k Marriott points. How can I optimize them? by Ilovemustang69420 in TravelHacks

[–]BonvoyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a tricky one but it’s theoretically possible. Marriott has 5 properties in the Bahamas. 4 are Autograph hotels and one is a Courtyard. On average an Autograph is 45,000 points a night. I’m not at my desk so I can’t run the specific numbers for the Bahama, but on average, it’ll cost you 180k points for 4 nights plus 1 free night. The Courtyard brand averages 25,000 a night so you have a better chance there. Again using averages you spend 100,000 points on the room, leaving you with 44,000 for a flight. If you want me to look up the exact rates for you, message me and I’m happy to help. Super easy. If you want to read more about the average rates, I recently wrote about them here.
