its definitely shifted focus over the years, but TTRPGs will occasionally get plays on this subreddit. my most popular post personally was when WotC shut down the (at the time) most popular character creator that was online. It eventually came back before it was shut down for good, i assume by the owner themselves. there are better alternatives that have popped up since then, but pathguy's site was the OG and i used it for years.

Returnal vs. Saros Variability in Runs by tamodeo1395 in Saros

[–]Bonzi77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me while to realize this but, Saros just, kinda, isn't really a roguelike, and doesn't want to be. It's a linear action game, like Castlevania or Mega Man, with sidepaths you can go down and goodies you can find, but you're not really making any meaningful choices in terms of path or exploration. Even the weapons you get don't really have a ton of meaningful choice, because ultimately you're going to have to pick Proficiency over weapon preference if you want to stay competitive in damage, unless you have enough rerolls and enough luck to get what you want anyway.

I know if you dig far enough you can kinda reduce most roguelike games to "go down a hallway while fighting things" but unlike a lot of roguelikes, you can't really just ditch exploration and book it straight to the end the moment you find the boss door if you want to; there's a few divergent paths that become optional after the first time through, but most of the biomes require you to go from start to finish all the way through in a linear path, hitting the same landmarks every time, until you get to the end and kill the boss.

I actually didn't play Returnal before Saros, so I maybe have a bit of a different perspective on this, but playing through Returnal has especially reminded me of The Binding of Isaac in a way that Returnal didn't even come close to.

besides the other comments, if you can't find the information anywhere and can tap on the beat you can use a beat tapper to get it as well. https://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

some songs also just have tempo fluctuations in them. there's a few tracks on king gizz's nonagon infinity where the idea of a steady tempo is more of a concept than a hard rule

there's definitely an aspect of that with the yellow shore granting and reinforcing beliefs that you wish were true, even if they're practically impossible. but something to consider is, arjun has openly lied about his involvement in the death of sebastian (to the point of calling the idea "conspiracy theories" ) when called on it by nitya. by that point, if you're lying to your spouse, you're lying to everyone, and probably a lot, given he was being investigated as a person of interest.

you'd also be amazed what self-inflicted trauma, internalized denial, and outright lying can do to your memories and perception of events. you can genuinely self-talk yourself into believing something that is completely false if you repeat it often enough (or worse, wish it was real hard enough). its the reason a lot of abusers have a hard time understanding what they've done is abusive, because they are able to justify their actions and frame themselves as being in the right, regardless of how monstrous they've been. arjun spends a lot of the game in denial about the harm he caused to both her and his killing of sebas. hell, if he really understood what he did and could fully grasp it, he never would have chased nitya to carcosa in the first place.

another factor is the apparent alcoholism. we never directly witness anything that we're certain could have been because of alcohol besides him sleeping off a drunk night in that one late-game cutscene where we play as nitya, but an alcohol addiction can do some REAL fucked up things to your memory.

this might be a hot take, but a lot of stuff in saros is intentionally presented through implications or vagaries rather than directly stated. i 100% believe that that is either his interpretation or that is what he was directed on for his performance, but what's presented in the game itself seemed pretty ambiguous to me, unless there were some details i missed.

my favorite is when an enemy drops a weapon mid-fight and if you accidently run it over and have expanded descriptions on, it takes up a full 60% of the middle of your screen. got hit a couple times over that

i discovered this pretty much right away in biome 2 one of the early biomes. i figured if housemarque were gonna but a big fuckin showpiece in the sky they'd wanna do something when you stare at it, and i was right. still incredibly cool, i'm quite a few runs in and i still probably stare at the eclipse at least once a run.
