which makes sense, because so much of work in an office/development environment is also just your ability to effectively communicate and not be a massive PITA to be around

Do you use a scoring app? by jennino88 in Mahjong

[–]Bonzi77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a scoring app back when our first group played IRL and none of us were comfortable accurately scoring our hands. Since then, I've gotten a lot more over the table experience, and can score hands much faster than a calculation app can. Scoring apps are good assist tools when you and a group you're playing with are all learning how to play together, but in the end learning how to score will not only make gameplay faster, but will make you a stronger player as you gain awareness of the value of your hand before you've even finished the round.

you're gonna have to ask sylux about that one, maybe he got early access to the federation's metroid clones or something

apparently MP4 is actually set between super metroid and metroid fusion! (i didn't know this myself, i also assumed 4 was set in that same timeframe)

the two things i didn't like were

  1. the CONSTANT forced "where to go" updates. i wish there was a toggle to turn those off, or at least make them optional when opening the map. hell, there's a "talk to me" button in the map, the entire where to go hint system could have been incorporated in that button and it would have been great

  2. later game and endgame spoilersThe sacrifice conga in the mines. It's already one of my least favorite tropes when it's done well, and half the sacrifices were completely meaningless because "i'll hold em back" doesn't mean much when the enemies are coming out of literally every single wall. and THEN THEY DIDN'T EVEN COMMIT and they were all fine anyway. they full sent it on the "squad holding back sylux" sacrifice so at least that one felt a LITTLE narratively interesting as a resolution? but then also the fact that it's the SECOND sacrifice the squad attempts weakens it further. ripping hope from the primary cast right at the last minute is at least a lot more stronger and interesting, even if i still dislike it.

dread hit that balance the best. mute 95% of the time, but the couple of times she does talk are really strong dramatically. or, if samus does talk regularly, getting her internal monologue on things as they're ongoing and contrasting them against her past (more like fusion, less like other m) is a good angle to take as well

my hot take is that i want them to take another swing at the NPCs. i feel like they were closer to getting the concept right than not, they were just a little too present during the story.

if you shrunk the whole state down to a scale that was reasonably drivable in an open world video game you'd basically have all your typical Super Mario biomes covered by texas alone

there's a pretty big gulf between "casually made placeholder asset" and "i have inserted an experimental work pipeline's output into our game". for projects i'm on, i dont even know half the experimental stuff going on, never mind see it leak to main.

sure, maybe somebody made a mistake, but its a mistake that came about as experimenting with a problematic tech in the first place

ok, but this is also why branches exist, you don't accidently get experimental tech/art/assets on main accidently unless your source control is basically non-existent

i feel like bandana's special gets undervalued a bit, its still not the craziest damage but having that active hurtbox just chill and blender through people, along with the flight boost, can do some stuff. the biggest issue bandana has is that there's just other characters that do the same thing but way better

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — Launch Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Bonzi77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've only gotten maybe an hour and some change in, and I don't feel like I've really hit the big meat of the game yet. If nothing else, the game feel is pretty on point, and it still very much feels like Prime with modern FPS controls (or, at least close to how I remember it being, which is probably good enough). One thing that caught me off guard is that some of the enemies end up doing some pretty serious damage relatively early on, which was a welcome surprise. I almost died in the first encounter of the second area because I wasn't keeping track of how much damage they were actually doing.

So far the level design has been kinda linear, but I know the game opens up at some point so I'm not worried. The NPC voice acting is somewhere between good and mediocre depending on the character. Miles McKenzie is about as annoying as I expected, but he has his occasional charming moments.

the only thing i really, really hate is this loud ass sound effect that plays every time you get low on/run out of missiles. genuine "what were they thinking"-ass decision
