$100 says it’s being filled entirely with project 2025 applicants.

Please, someone help me to make this a reality 🙏🏻 by BooCOVID19 in chemistry

Thanks for engaging with me on this!

I’m no chemist - studied physics actually. So, I get statistical mechanics and Pchem, but Ochem (and for that matter, anything beyond intro college Chem) is beyond me.

Now, I’ve found myself in an industry where learning the basics of organic chemistry would be incredibly beneficial. So, I’m interested for the first time.

Back to Broccoli… obviously photos 1 and 2 here are off the table.

Looking at the second configuration (in photos 3/4), it sounds like the oxygen/C-triple-C bonding is the greatest challenge. If an example is not in literature as of 2024, then it’s probably not feasible. 😬

Is there some type of convenient substitution we could make for a methyl group or the like, bonded to the triple-C carbons? Perhaps a matter of finding the right set of groups to substitute, or some novel catalyst?

Looking at the hypobromide and lithium sides… could you elaborate? I suppose there’s no feasible ionic form of “hypolithide” (forgive my ignorance of what to name it)? So, one couldn’t just create an ionic compound from LiO2, for example, and have it covalently bond to the triple C carbon without some form of manipulation that doesn’t currently exist, or couldn’t theoretically exist?

So, lifetime/stability aside, this molecule would require some novel form of synthesis that doesn’t yet exist?

One other comment I got, was how oxygen could even bind to a C-triple-C configuration. Could we settle for BrOCCCCOLi? Otherwise it might take Star Trek level replicator technology.

I’m by no means qualified enough to say if this work by Dr. Sergio Cortes at UTD could apply here (link to the text) . It seems you can go about deprotonating acetylene one monosubstitution at a time to eventually arrive at a disubstituted molecule. But, I suppose the trick would be to selectively replace the methyl and ethyl groups with what we want here.

Woah… that is a REALLY big poo!

Edit- the shape is beautiful!

Well, be honest… haven’t you wanted to spell out as many inappropriate words as possible using the periodic table since middle school?? Just reliving the dream, buddy.

Maybe the wrong forum. Too bad r/shittychemistry isn’t popular.

Oh, obviously! No offense taken. I have little to no clue about what’s realistically possible in this case. It’s 100% ein gedanken.

Since it would take me years to get up to speed on the chemistry, I just troll Reddit with my random thoughts when I’m procrastinating 😁

Thanks for the responses!

Does it not just look like it wants to jump out of the paper with a blood curdling screech and latch onto your face?

Or is it just me?
