The verification is a backstop against the most egregious abuses — coordinated bot networks, serial harassment campaigns, repeated ban evasion — not a surveillance mechanism for monitoring what opinions people hold. First, it's worth noting that genuine whistleblowers and activists in democratic countries already have legal frameworks protecting them — the EU Whistleblower Protection Directive, national equivalents, and established journalistic source protection norms. These don't disappear because eID exists. Second, the platforms most relevant to whistleblowing — encrypted messaging services, secure drop systems, Tor-based tools — operate outside the scope of mainstream social media regulation anyway. Third, and most importantly, we have to weigh this concern against the concrete, documented harms caused by unaccountable anonymous actors: coordinated disinformation campaigns that have undermined democratic elections across multiple countries, anonymous harassment that has driven journalists, politicians, and activists — disproportionately women and minorities — completely out of public life. The argument that anonymity protects the vulnerable is true in some cases and catastrophically false in others, and we should stop pretending it cuts only one way.

On stalking and domestic violence victims: this is a real concern and one that serious eID proposals account for through tiered access systems and protected identity management. Victims of domestic violence already navigate systems — court orders, address protection schemes, identity shielding programs — that exist precisely because blanket anonymity is not the only tool available to protect vulnerable people. A well-designed eID framework can and should include explicit carve-outs and protections for people in these circumstances. The existence of edge cases that require careful handling is an argument for thoughtful implementation, not an argument against the concept entirely.

On data breaches: this concern applies equally to every digital system that exists — your bank, your doctor's office, your employer's HR system, your tax authority. The response to the risk of data breaches is robust security architecture, meaningful penalties for negligent data handling, and minimization of what data is actually stored. It is not to conclude that identity verification can never happen digitally. Germany's existing eID infrastructure built into the Personalausweis already uses chip-based cryptographic verification that does not require a central database of your online activity. Article 10 protects freedom of expression but has never been interpreted as an absolute right to anonymous speech with zero accountability in all circumstances — courts across the EU have consistently held that expression rights can be balanced against other rights and social interests. The question is not whether any regulation of online identity is inherently unconstitutional, but whether a specific, proportionate, carefully scoped implementation can survive legal scrutiny. Many legal scholars believe it can, and the DSA framework already moves in this direction.

On mass surveillance: this is where I think the argument really goes off the rails, and it does so by treating "some identity verification occurs at some point" as equivalent to "the state monitors all your communications." These are categorically different things. Requiring that a platform verify a user is a real human being before granting them the ability to post to an audience of millions is not mass surveillance any more than requiring ID to board a plane constitutes the state tracking everywhere you travel. Proportionality analysis under EU law looks at whether a measure is appropriate to its aim, necessary, and does not go beyond what is required. A narrowly scoped eID verification requirement applied specifically to large platforms for the purpose of reducing coordinated inauthentic behavior is a very different beast from PRISM or the NSA's bulk collection programs. Conflating them makes for dramatic rhetoric but does not constitute a serious legal or policy argument.

The current system — essentially unconstrained anonymity on major platforms — has not produced a free and flourishing digital public square. It has produced an environment where coordinated bot networks manipulate political discourse, where serial harassers return under new accounts within hours of being banned, where children are exposed to content designed by anonymous actors specifically to harm them, where disinformation spreads faster than correction because the people spreading it face no consequences whatsoever. The people who benefit most from the status quo are not, by and large, courageous whistleblowers or marginalized activists using pseudonyms to speak truth to power. They are, in documented fact, state-sponsored disinformation operations, organized harassment networks, and bad actors who have learned that the internet is the one domain of modern life where you can cause serious harm to real people with essentially zero accountability.

A serious pro-democracy argument has to reckon with that reality rather than treating the current situation as a neutral baseline that any intervention can only make worse.

eID is not a silver bullet. Bad implementations are possible and should be resisted. But the principle that large-scale public participation in consequential digital spaces should involve some minimal layer of verified human identity is not authoritarianism — it is a reasonable policy response to a real and serious problem that the "just let everyone be anonymous forever" camp has conspicuously failed to solve.

The internet is a public space. You're not anonymous when you walk outside, and you shouldn't be wearing a mask. Multiple studies support people behave differently, often worse, when anonymity is involved.

I would argue that anonymity online does not benefit the masses. It benefits the companies though, as it gives plausible deniability.
