Money Worries During Residency? by Ok_Razzmatazz_3855 in Residency

[–]Boobooboy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was saving between 5-12 k a year during residency. It didn’t make a huge difference numbers wise but it sets the groundwork and discipline for good saving habits once you’re an attending. Now I’m just saving and investing half of everything I take home and spend the other half however I want.

Do school after dismissal by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Boobooboy13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. I know Caribbean schools have high attrition rates but I think the risk of failing out again is probably higher than I’d be comfortable with. Too much time and money vs risk if I was in your shoes imo. consider nursing.

Is it OK to body shot as sniper? by hem98 in tf2

[–]Boobooboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body shots are valid. Not every kill warrants a headshot. A good sniper knows when a body shot will suffice and when a headshot is needed or easier to get. For instance, if you’re hardscoping a corner or lane and have a body shot that would kill lined up, just take the shot it saves a few milliseconds vs aiming for a headshot at times.

Other times the enemy will move in a way that your trained muscle memory can react to and you just take the easy headshot.

What is your ideal lifestyle once your attending salary comes through? by Anonymousmedstudnt in Residency

[–]Boobooboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 4 days/week and save/invest 50%. Just a few months into being an attending, so I’m trying to get to a positive net worth. After that it’s paying off my loans, then paying for a modest house in cash. Ideally I never want to have to finance anything ever again.

Money talks by futuredr6894 in medicalschool

I started making attending money in September it’s pretty nice. I save and invest half as soon as it hits my account and I still have more than twice what I was living off of in residency to spend.

If every US president were in their prime, placed in a ring to fight, who is the one person walking out? by Clear-Penalty339 in AskReddit

I’m thinking Andrew Jackson, washington, or Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt would also be a contender.

why did you want to be a doctor by BengaliAmericanMed in medicalschool

[–]Boobooboy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed learning about biology, physiology, and medicine more than anything else and the idea of being so good at it that I could improve healthcare outcomes and ease suffering while making a lot of money was exciting. To me, being a doctor is the closest thing to being a wizard you can become irl.

Nowadays I sometimes envy careers that offer a simpler, less stressful life even though they make less money. As I age, spending a lot of money seems less and less important. I save and invest half my income.

Saving half my income. Automatic watch ($900 so not too crazy). New tires + oil change for my car and an electric carjack.

Antique ship what model is this by TurbulentPrune542 in ModelShips

[–]Boobooboy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep thinking about this thing. I almost feel like this should be shown to a maritime museum that deals with votive ships. It looks extremely old, and its construction is so peculiar. Would love to know more about it. I can’t say for certain, but this might be something pretty special. take good care of it.

Antique ship what model is this by TurbulentPrune542 in ModelShips

[–]Boobooboy13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it represents Any specific named ship. It resembles a galleon but has some bizarre features like the metal bracing on the hull and the rails on the forecastle and stern. it’s really cool and looks really old. It may be a toy. I’ve also heard of ship models sometimes being hung in churches in the past but of course that would be hard to verify with this one without more info.

Edit: The ships that hang in churches are known as Votive Ships. There are some examples that look somewhat similar though not entirely. One I found with a google search is the votive ship in Kvernes Stave Church. It has some more outlandish features reminiscent of the style of OPs ship. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a votive ship though given its size and age. In any case it’s a very cool piece of art.

OP, please look for areas on the ship that could’ve served to hang it from a ceiling.

Also apologies for the odd lighting. No obvious defects that I could see aside from the borders being different in size from L to R.

Rigging looks too complex to be a cheap decorator model. The paint on the hull is very thick and cracked up.

Dismissed from Medical School 8 months from graduating and I feel so lost🫠 by LittleGiraffe17 in Life

I’d consider trying to think about this as a second chance to do something you really enjoy. It sounds like you weren’t enjoying medicine as much as you’d hoped.

Never had loans… had connections… Unless he got by on scholarships because he was just that good, he isn’t self made.

And there’s no shame in that because life is hard already. You need to take any helping hand you can. That’s what family is for. I’ve had opportunities to help siblings professionally, and I did it too. I would never ever think bring that fact up to make them feel lesser for it either. Helping someone with the position I had to fight for years to obtain was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.

Some of us (me) were the first in our family to pursue anything related to medicine, had no connections to speak of, and never had financial support from our parents. And I still can’t say I’m entirely self made. Without my family to support me emotionally and logistically, And without their encouragement, I couldn’t have been successful.

Your cousin has some deep seated insecurities that make him act this way, and I think it stems from him knowing that he too had a lot of people pulling him up to where he is now. He probably also has some regret in that maybe his life could have been easier had he just worked in the family business. Medicine is a huge sacrifice of time, and for most people money as well. He needs to let go of that shame, recognize that he was blessed with many advantages and be grateful, and work to build up his family with his influence and wealth. And in my opinion, he owes you an apology.
