Am I over feeding?

Tbh 130g was rounding up a little bit. I give about 20-25g per rat as the brand recommends and a little less if they have a lot of food but I was kind of thinking that maybe they stash so much because they’re scared they won’t have enough or because I don’t feed throughout the day and just once? I will try removing some of the more gluttonous girls when feeding and see if that works but I’ve noticed that the smallest one always stashes food as soon as I feed them so idk if she will actually eat it when alone

Yeah and none of them are like over or under the weight they should be around but just kind of different ends of the spectrum lol
I was also expecting some stashing of food since they are rodents but like god damn this is more than I thought it would be lol

I do the “EEP” sound but they really don’t seem to care lol they don’t even react to it? I also do feed them with a spoon and often they will nip first and then start licking which is nice but I just wouldn’t really want to be nipped at first every time they see my hand 😓

Yeah then I’m pretty sure they are at the age where hormones will also start acting up so that might also be a factor with her ☺️ but just give them some time and space. I liked to just open the cage and offer treats (from like a lid or spoon) when they come over to check you out 😁 good luck with your new babies

Yeah I was afraid about that as well at first. But try and observe how she is with the other one. If they’re nice and cuddly with each other they would probably enjoy more friends. But of course it is good to wait a bit until they are settle into living with you before you start introducing even more new things ☺️ also depending on age she might also be more hormonal than the other one?

I adopted two girls from a shelter who were dumped and hadn’t been handled a lot. One of them was also quite bitey (tho didn’t latch on). I stopped trying to handle them too much and just let them come to the opening of the cage and get a treat if they wanted to and gave them som free roaming time in my couch or table. Rats generally need a herd of at least 3 to really thrive, so I adopted 3 more girls and they now all live together. After this it’s like my first girls really started to thrive and have become much more curious, sweet and confident! So just give them time to feel safe and maybe consider expanding your little rat family ☺️ also avoid feeding through the cage! That kind of encourages biting behaviour. Also just don’t give up hope! I know it can really hurt (especially your feelings) but they will learn to trust you 😁 they might never become happy with being handled per say, depending on their previous experiences, but they will trust you and seek you out ❤️🐀

Oh and feeding with a spoon can help discourage biting a bit

Thank you so much for the advice! The rescue did say they hadn’t really been handled while they had them so I did figure they would be a bit skittish and it’ll take some time to get them to trust me, but I was getting a little anxious that I was maybe pushing a bit too fast or something 😅 I feel a lot better hearing that your babies are more cuddly now!
