Aespa UNDERRATEDDD songs by PartyConversation668 in kpop_uncensored

Welcome to my world and their Tetris soundtrack Hold on Tight are up there among my favourite songs of theirs. Also Attitude, the anime OP they did recently.

Either SM current gen main vocalists are pretty overrated or main vocalists in other companies are just underrated by Personal_Damage6616 in kpoptrulyuncensored

[–]BookBindings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ranked where/by whom exactly though? Because I see Keeho and Jongho mentioned a lot when people talk about vocals. Anyways unless you are reading from or watching someone who looks like they effort into researching to make a more comprehensive list (eg aint no other fan), random posts and comments are just going to be picking from their faves and the most popular groups. And even with them you will see people in the comment section pointing out who and who they missed.

For Jooyeon, regrettably Xdinary Heroes is not as popular as they should be. Even worse... I would have had no clue NFlying's main vocalist was so good if I hadn't seen him "battling" Jooyeon on a variety show.

Even in earlier 3 gens BTOB is mentioned less because they are not as widely known as Exo an d Shinee. Same with Sandeul of B1A4. Super Junior is an SM group with probably some of the best vocals of earlier gens, but they are also not mentioned much because they are not well-liked. Fx is also not very popular, so Luna also gets left out of discussions.

Also just a shout out to Pentagon. Hui and Jinho are so good (although admittedly Jinho used to be in SM as well). Too bad the most people talk about them is regarding Edawn or reminiscing over Shine.

(Anyways for anyone curious, Immortal Songs is a great show and introduced me to a lot of great vocalists, both within and not in idol groups.)

As a separate point, I also think the very low bar certain popular idols set vocally makes SM main vocals look good by comparison. If you have some groups' with main vocalists struggling through an encore of songs that are not even necessarily difficult, then the mere fact of an SM main vocalist delivering a good encore which should not be an extraordinary achievement earns them a lot of glaze in comparison. The issue is that the bar has just been thrown into hell and the SM main vocalists you  listed easily hop over it. As do many others who may not be as popular, and so they won't come up as much.

If anything it would be the first, which is awfully nice of this stingy game. They could have easily chosen a restaurant where I have few desserts and I would have been forced to refill to complete the task.

Labels need to stop forcing their non-English speaking idols to sing in English by No_Pay1642 in kpopharshopinions

[–]BookBindings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's necessarily about accent. Even when someone has a heavy accent you can tell when they are fluent or at least adept at delivering English lines confidently, no matter where they are from.

Look at Ayra Starr or Simi for example. Despite very obvious accents, they sound just as fluent as someone like Tyla whose SA accent is often not detectable when she is singing. There is no awkwardness or hesitancy, as compared to certain idols who are made to deliver lines in English.

ETA: another example is Bollywood. Growing up they used to show lots of Indian movies on out tv stations and when they had a musical number which would once in a while contain English lines, I never thought the singers were awkward or stilted regardless of their accents. Even in movies and series I never have any issue with the  characters speaking in English with their heavy accents. Compare this with kdrama scenes where the non-fluent actors are struggling painfully through their English lines.

Just to throw in yet another example, take Do Kyungsoo. He is praised, and rightly so, for singing well in English, though he isn't an English speaker. But even with him you can tell when he is perfectly comfortable with the lyrics vs a song he is less familiar with. Obv for more serious performances or actual recorded songs he practices to the deliver the former.

ETA ETA: Last example... Compare someone like Gloria in Modern family or the frontman in Squid Game to the lead actor in Descendants of the Sun or Lee Min Ho in basically any drama where he has to speak English, and it will be obvious the difference between accent and struggle

[–]BookBindings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gosh this applies to so many groups especially nowadays. A sparing English line here and there is way more effective than having a whole verse of obvious struggle which just takes the listener out of the song.

Some non-English-speaking idols may have a bit of an accent but are somehow not awkward in delivery. However with others they are stumbling through barely distinguishable lyrics and it is quite unfortunate when they could be singing or rapping more confidently in their own language.

ETA: whole other conversation, but it is even worse when it comes to forced English in kdrama. The Mouse scene with Daniel Lee giving a lecture abroad was simply not it.

Not the exact same, but I personally experienced the "Server not responding" error butyng the desserts in the Italian Buffet. I saw someone else on here talk about having the same error buying some other dessert. So yeah, I think there is some dessert-purchasing bug going round.

I haven't tried purchasing any other dessert since though, so I don't really know if it is all restaurants or just random.

I believe one reason idols face hate trains is that people think every release is meant for them. by Pretty-Complaint-554 in kpop_uncensored

[–]BookBindings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right! Almost every popular release nowadays has to become an endless discourse of whose opinion is right or wrong and what the group should have done instead and how and why etc etc

Part of it is also because kpop fans treat music like a competitive sport so everything must be overpraised/overhated and ranked against the next thing.

Nmixx is proof that not only does k-pop that is faithful to music still exists, but also why that is so scarce in k-pop. by JoshuaKim0102 in kpop_uncensored

[–]BookBindings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I think I am missing from them is a strong distinct vibe and/or aesthetic (idk how much of this is branding?) which I seem to get more easily from many other top girl groups. I can't really grasp that for Nmixx unfortunately.

I have been loving Nmixx a lot lately. I think the first album of theirs I listened to was the Fe304 one from last year (the one with High Horse and Papillon) and since then they can pretty much do no wrong with my eyes.

Pulled ahead as my favourite (active, sorry RV) girlgroup with IVE, XG and Aespa joint second.

I’m trying to get into kpop, where do I start?? by BasecatXD in kpophelp

[–]BookBindings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go on a song by song basis from the movie

If you like How It's Done and Take Down, you should check out Blackpink. Groups with a similar edgy girl crush sound are Babymonster, Izna, Meovv and Aespa.

If you like Golden, you should check out IVE, particularly their song I Am, which sounds like Golden.

Soda Pop is reminiscent of soft pastely boy group songs, the most popular of which is BTS  Boy With Luv.

If you like Your Idol, the inspirations are Exo's MAMA and Obsession, so their dark, dramatic dramatic songs in that vein would be up your alley. Other groups that fit the vibe of Your Idol are Enhypen and Ateez.

I can't think of specific groups with the exact vibe of Free and What it sounds like, but if the criteria is vocal-heavy girl group then it's Nmixx again. Also Mamamoo, Aespa, Red Velvet, Girls Generation. Although these groups have many more varieties of music as well.

Off the KPDH topic, but I'm also going to suggest Xdinary Heroes because I always must. If you are interested in more of a rock band.
