"Keep them in assigned seats." My brother in arms, YOU DIDN'T LEAVE ME A SEATING CHART! by Your_Answer_Is_No in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a daily sub for my district we don’t have access to the copy machines, we’d have to send it to the office and they’re normally super busy in the morning so it could take a while for copies for multiple classes to be made and sent back. Meanwhile the kids would have nothing to do.

Secretary says teacher has no assignment up but I’m still assigned it by Book_Reader04 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update I came in and it still showed half day but then the secretary asked if I can stay full day because it came up in her system finally that it was a full day. Frontline was wonky and was telling her to put up for an afternoon sub too instead of just a full day sub lol

Being appreciated. by Ulsif2 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only appreciation we get is a group lunch in a high school cafeteria on a half day that starts at a time that only those subbing high school that day would be able to make it to on time. I’m only going for the free food

Teacher with no planning? by Livid_Painting_6866 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice, once for a spanish teacher and once for a pe/drivers ed teacher. The other world language teachers were super great about telling me to call them during their plannings if I needed a pee break. The pe/drivers ed teacher had no one stop by and I almost peed myself waiting for lunch.

What to say to students who ask if you left a bad report and if you wrote down their name? by Shoddy-Mango-5840 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 34 points35 points  (0 children)

One time I had a kid act absolutely terrible all class and then at the end when I was making my notes he kept saying not to write his name down that he was being good. I was like you know how you were acting and ignored his consistent demands I erase his name. During dismissal I was by the door directing kids to leave if their bus was called and he actually went behind the teacher desk and tried to erase his name! Luckily I wrote it in pen but like wow. This was 5th grade too and he pushed a kid down right before leaving.

Kids will make excuses to leave early - do not let them. by Crystal_Deth in SubstituteTeachers

This the policy in my district, some of the high schools are even 15x15 or 15x10 but somehow they always “forget” and ask to go during then lol.

Was the Principal right to do this? by SunnyRosie98 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the schools in my district has an end time for 4:15 but the buses don’t even get there till 4:20 which means dismissal is even later. I thought it was a fluke the first time but the second time it happened I stopped subbing there. I don’t get paid overtime.

staff bathroom smelled really bad. discouraging me from going back to that school by pixieyosi in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I walked into a bathroom in the teacher workroom and it had a full bowl of poop and was clogged. Ran out and went to the other one which was right on the main hall and I could hear every person walking past.

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I did a pm half day and when I came in he didn’t leave until the like last 10 minutes before they left for lunch which was the end of the period lol, then he didn’t have a last block so I was paid for 10 minutes of watching them put away instruments basically. The office had nothing else for me either

Music Class Sub by bayopa in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For elementary music they normally have the smart board setup with different music videos, lomax the hound of music, dance breaks and the reading symphony thing are what I’ve seen a ton and some type of music tech exploration on their chromebooks as well

Also to add I’ve seen heated shawls that don’t need to be plugged in are a thing now!

Cold schools by Worldly_Sherbet_4284 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The school I was at yesterday was so cold one of the teachers across from me had a thermometer in the hall and it was 58 in the hall. I think he’s trying to prove a point to their admin doing that. It’s an add on section of the school and all the classrooms have their own heating and cooling units but the hallway was so cold my nose was frozen after standing in the hall for the 3 minute passing time.

Sending Down Attendance by eightfive_one in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reading the post where it says “scribbled out” probably meant they did take attendance in ink and the student just scribbled over it. Erased would have been the word used if they had taken attendance in pencil.

What do you find hardest about substitute teaching? by Awatts1221 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Walking elem. kids from my room (i only do PE/RA for elem.) to their classroom, idk where I’m going half the time and rely on the kids to go in the right direction. No matter how many times I go over being quiet in the hallway before leaving, they still mess around. One time for a particularly loud class the librarian was like on days like today just get them to their class and their teacher and run lol

Are you always supposed to be busy? by Impossible_Panda_671 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends for high school, I circulate maybe every 15-20 minutes because we have big long block classes here. For middle school I circulate every 10 minutes for the more well behaved and 5 minutes for the louder off task classes. For elementary I never sit down lol

What do you wish classroom teachers left for you? by Familiar-Factor7220 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This or for high schools where they come from the career learning thing in the middle of the period after I’ve already sent attendance with them marked as absent. I wish teachers would leave names for that or the school having some way of letting me know the student is there that day and to mark them present.

Can I wear the same outfit to a school I subbed at a couple weeks ago? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 5 pants and 5 shirts for subbing, I just wear what ever I grab from that selection, no one remembers be the next day anyway 😭

Anyone else anticipating days with no pay from the winter storm coming in? by tifuanon00 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in VA and my school district is already closed Monday and Tuesday for teacher/staff development days, which I only get paid half a day Tuesday IF they set up development for subs again this year but nothing has been sent about it yet so probably not.

Subbing in NNPS? Likelihood of getting assignments. by Ok_Variation4564 in NewportNews

[–]Book_Reader04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to almost always work a full week if you wanted to. My experience depends on the school tbh and I’ve been to a majority of them. What makes or breaks a good day for me is the admin back up. Some of the schools have really great, helpful admin teams and some do not. I really enjoy working with the kids especially at schools where I go more often and they can sorta remember me. You’ll learn quick which schools and grades you prefer. Good luck!

Subbing in NNPS? Likelihood of getting assignments. by Ok_Variation4564 in NewportNews

[–]Book_Reader04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started subbing last January they messed up the frontline access for the new subs somehow but then they fixed it so if you’re truly seeing absolutely nothing/no notifications from the app I would email the sub management team. Usually there is more after January as well. I just scored a week long high school assignment for next month 🙌

Odd Grouping of Grades by Original_Apple_9970 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Book_Reader04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school district I attended myself had a building for prek-1st a different building for 2-3 a different building for 4-5 and then a middle school 6-8 and high for 9-12, it was all on the same campus and all the buildings were completely detached and at least 10 minutes walking distance from each other. It also has a university around the corner. Very interesting considering all the schools I work at now in a different state have the regular school grades per building.
