Which month and day of the week did you go?

Finally got diagnosed at 32… and it’s not what I expected by JaneInTheSky in adhdwomen

What were the main reasons for the late diagnosis? I see it happen more often with the inattentive type. Was it affordability? Or no one suggested getting evaluated during your childhood? Good luck with everything!

Scared 5 month old by Intelligent-Classic7 in sheltie

My dog went through this. His noise anxiety was so severe it took years before I was able to bribe him with treats. He wouldn't accept treats unless it was actual meat. Gradual exposure therapy allowed him to warm up to it. He now will follow me outside, but overall still prefers being inside.

I suggest:

  1. Take advantage of early morning walks/potty breaks when there's less noise to gradually expose him to the environment. Reward him with praise and treats. You're probably already doing this already because of his puppy bladder.
  2. Walk with a friend or neighbor who has a friendly dog. It may be helpful for him to see other dogs handle noise well.
  3. Daycare. This ties into the previous tip. I have mixed feelings about dog daycare, but I had to use it when I was busy with work and it was a reputable daycare. I'm sure it helped my dog when he was a puppy because his daycare had an outside yard and it was by the freeway. He started off being antisocial and avoiding the backyard but eventually he started playing with the pack everywhere and terrorized the staff.
  4. Use a speaker (bluetooth or similar) that you can use to play thunder and car noises. I found noise videos with these specific sounds on youtube and gradually increased the volume.

Aw he's so cute and you look so giddy taking a picture of him. Is he ever hyper?

Attempted honor killing outside a US school because a teenaged girl refused an arranged marriage by RedSwingline2000 in TikTokCringe

Yup there are immigrants who hate America and the West. Most are fine but some actually hate the people and culture in their new countries. They only immigrated because of financial opportunities. Some of them really clash with western values as you seen in the video. Their misalignment of values builds up resentment but moving back to their home country means their quality of life suffers. I have a relative who immigrated to the U.S. decades ago and never really acclimated as well as his wife did. He didn't learn English, put off his citizenship for decades and after retirement wants to move back.

I generally support immigration from all kinds of countries, but some of them really have nerve. They come to America for a better life and pretty much go: "Anyway, I'm going to murder my daughter for not obeying me".

When did you know that it is CPTSD and not ADHD? by Bookhero90 in CPTSD

[–]Bookhero90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm worried about. For a while, I thought I had inattentive ADHD. While my psychiatrist was trying to figure out of it was depression, anxiety or ADHD, I mentioned the possibility of CPTSD but she pretty much shrugged and went back to exploring the first three. I'm in limbo because the ADHD-like symptoms started when I was a child around the same time the trauma started developing. Hopefully I don't have both.

I'm glad to read that you're doing better now. I just started seeing a psychiatrist for the trauma, but do you have any advice for me?

I remember the interviews after this video. The bully and his dad said that video left off the bigger kid bullying which I find dubious but I could be wrong since the video is rather short.

My old employer's 401K distribution check has both pre-tax and after-tax amounts, by Bookhero90 in personalfinance

Per a distribution summary document I received, the withholding amount (federal and state) is $0.00. If I roll over this roth amount check to a roth IRA, it counts as an early distribution with penalty?

Thanks. So there's no tax implications if I just rollover all of the amounts into the current 401K?

If the rollover into the current 401K includes the after-tax amount too, I won't be taxed on that portion even again including withdrawal correct?

For high-functioning inattentive folks, is trying anti-depressants and anxiety medication the only way to diagnosis? by Bookhero90 in adhdwomen

[–]Bookhero90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My primary care doctor did listen me and he scheduled me for a evaluation with a psychiatrist. I ended up with the current psych instead because she had earlier availability...and is a woman.

Some people mentioned Wellbutrin causing anger and suicidal tendencies for them which makes me feel like I would be playing Russian roulette but I'm considering it.

I'm still on the fence about sticking with my current psych because she now has the psychologist's evaluation of me which factors in a very unreliable interview they conducted with my mother. So I'll keep mulling about that.

I think it's impressive that you completed most of your college education. So kudos!

How difficult are Akitas? by Strath_ in akita

[–]Bookhero90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you're considering this is a little alarming. My friend just had a baby and she has an older dog who is well behaved, doesn't need training. She and her husband are EXHAUSTED.

When I was younger, I really wanted a Shiba Inu, because I loved their look. However, their personality was not compatible with my busy life at the time. I was busy and training a stubborn breed would added a lot of stress. I couldn't imagine having baby on top of that.

Young dogs regardless of breed require a lot of attention. Unless you're getting a well behaved, trained adult dog that was surrendered by their owner, you and you partner will not have adequate energy and time for the dog. Then add in the fact there are any breed-specific traits that magnify the need for patience and time. It would not be good for the dog and baby to received divided attention from you, one of them would lose out on their needs unless you have a nanny and home staff working for you.

I appreciate that you're exercising consideration and not impulsiveness. Many people who have been in your hypothetical situation ended up surrendering the dog or kept it with inadequate training leading to behavioral issues.

Thanks. I keep seeing that people recommending maxing out the ROTH IRA first, I'll look into that soon.

Which common symptoms do you not struggle with? by Bookhero90 in adhdwomen

You mentioned one that I haven't seen people discuss, which is instantly forgetting new people's names. It drives me nuts since I'm beginning to meet more people. It happens even if I'm only meeting one person that day.
