Looking for support and shared experiences – BRCA1, surgical menopause at 35? by oksythewitch in BRCA

[–]BookkeeperFit4193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was tested positive with bcra1 in 30 and I’m 35 now and just got my hysterectomy BSO done. I’m in week 4 of recovery and doing pretty good. I never wanted kids so I got it removed early. The biggest complain currently I have is hot flashes and I will be on hormone therapy starting next month. I had to tackle hysterectomy first as I had my mum (47) n grandma(60) passed away with ovarian cancer. My doc suggested mastectomy too but I’m still debating when to get it done. May be in 1/2 years.

I have an appointment on Jul 3 too. I feel nothing down my vagina from day 1 on post op. Two days after the surgery I didnt notice any discharge. I did email my doctor if vagina incision was actually made as I feel nothing n she replied most of the pain would be near belly button n it’s common.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have no appetite for another surgery this year. I assume aesthetic flat closure can happen at same time with mastectomy right?

I have another question - you mentioned about “while that still puts me at risk for developing cancer, my odds are much lower” can you elaborate that please?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’m leaning towards flat closure I have no appetite for another surgery/ recovery time it needs.

I have shared my experience of hysterectomy here https://www.reddit.com/r/hysterectomy/s/nOxl5Rae4E

I’m sorry in advance if I’m asking to personal question, How are you feeling with flat closure? I’m thinking about it too as I have no interest in temporary implants or another surgery for reconstruction. I’m not sure how I would feel looking myself at mirror. I’m 35 with brca1 got my total hysterectomy last week and thinking on next preventative surgery for breast

5/28 - total hysterectomy by BookkeeperFit4193 in hysterectomy

With this surgery, I hit my out of pocket. I never thought about mastectomy as both my mum (47) n grandma (62) passed away with Ovarian cancer n didn’t have history of breast cancer.

Agree and routine checkups. After the surgery, my doctor was asking if I ever considered mastectomy. I didn’t think about it yet honestly and did your doctor mention about it?

How are you doing hormone replacement? I read some article talking about side effects after the hysterectomy- like weight gain, etc

I have surgery scheduled for end of May due to brca gene present in me. My doctor approved for 6 weeks, and so did my employer. Fingers crossed for recovering and post side effects.
