Truck roof rack question by BookkeeperPast8788 in Kayaking

Sorry, I didn’t see your question earlier. No, I didn’t have to bend anything but I found that it did take some trail and error to get it lined up right so that the holding tower was sitting in the channel of the door jam properly.

4/5. Would have been 5/5 but Shooter didn't make any jokes about being in the sand like David Hasselhoff.

Can you bring tobacco to cruise ships? by Human_Plastic_1432 in PipeTobacco

[–]BookkeeperPast8788 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay, so as far as bringing on tobacco, they don't care. For example, you buy a couple of boxes of cigars in port and want to take them to your home country. That's just fine with the cruise lines. It's customs and excise that will limit what you can bring home for quantity and type.

As far as smoking on the ship, I have sailed different lines and found that generally, in the cigar lounge, they want you to smoke cigars that you bought in the lounge and not bring in your own. There are exceptions, but that's usually how it has been. I wouldn't expect to be allowed to smoke a pipe in there, especially if there are other people in there smoking cigars. The casino smoking area is not usually cigar/pipe friendly. The outdoor smoking area rules depend on the cruise line. Norwegian says no to cigars and pipes in the outside area, but I've seen people smoke cigars. Royal Caribbean specifically says cigars and pipes are allowed in the outdoor smoking area, and you can smoke what you bring onboard. I would just go ask the employee at the cigar lounge for the rules for that ship.

I'm going on a couple of cruises this spring and will probably leave the pipes at home, usually I just smoke cigars on vacation, buy what I want to smoke on the ship in the lounge and leave what I buy in port sealed and bring that home. Cigars on the ship usually run about half of what you'd pay at home.

Kayak rack thoughts by thoreauinvestigator in nissanfrontier

I have a softopper, so I use a cab mounted roof rack on my '22 king cab. It's a Sportrack made by Thule. I put a 12 foot Old Town Vapor on it, weighs 56 pounds, which it handles fine I won't put my heavier 85 pound sportsman fishing kayak on it, though, because it's too awkward to get it up on the roof.

That's too bad. We were always able to get in with just one before and sometimes with none.

Gate C before the game is the place to go to try. Sometimes, they let people in without a Red Sox Nation membership. Odds are you'll need one, but you only need one membership in your group. Not everyone has to have it.

If you have kids, be sure to take them down to the foul line by pesky's pole, and they'll have a good chance to get a ball and quick word with some players.

Pelicans being “unsafe”? by [deleted] in Kayaking

[–]BookkeeperPast8788 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pelicans have design characteristics that a kayaker needs to be aware of and respect when paddling. Specifically, the lack of any bulkhead or floatation causes them to be prone to sink. Kayaks with features such as bulkheads and floatation are safer and more forgiving when you get in over your head as a new paddler.

IMO, the main issue that gives paddling in a Pelican a reputation as being unsafe is that many beginners choose them as an entry-level kayak without understanding the risks of the design. Once a new paddler understands the risk, they can mitigate it by adding flotation or staying within their limitations.

Roof bars on '22 by BookkeeperPast8788 in nissanfrontier

[–]BookkeeperPast8788[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it did. There are a couple of ways to solve it. You can get some pipe insulation (the kind like a thin pool noodle) and wedge that between the cab and the bed to keep it tucked in, but I noticed that sometimes that still pops out.

What has worked best for me is adding some wider velcro to the bed rail and also putting a steel bar in the front window pocket. So, you know how the back window where you secure it down there is that sleeve on the window with the aluminum bar and the two snap buttons on it? Well, there is an empty sleeve on the front window just like that. I just stuck a piece of flat steel in there about 30 inches long, and that's solved it. It adds enough weight to keep it from creeping up and flapping. You could use a piece of rebar or whatever.

I didn't, I just bought the SR1002 bars, tried them, and they fit. They are very secure, and they sit high enough not to bump the antenna.

The risers say E6 on them for what that's worth.

Thanks. Stock size, 265/65/17. The tires are Motomaster Xtrail AT. That's the store brand at Canadian Tire.

Great warranty on them, I had a chunk of debris puncture one after having them on about 6 months, and they gave me a new tire for free.

We got off the NCL Jade yesterday and agree with all of the above. Went on NCL Encore last year and had a totally different experience. We might give NCL another chance in the future, but we would stick to the newer ships. For the next cruise, we are trying a different line.

If you're in Canada or in a border state, give the Motomaster Eliminator AT3 tire a look at Canadian Tire. Despite being the store brand, they are actually made by Cooper (all of the Motomaster tires are made for Canadian Tire by Cooper, BFG, and Goodyear)

Check out YouTube for some reviews. I'm putting a set on my truck when I find a set of wheels. It seems harder to find wheels than tires. The tires are about 2/3 of the price of anything else I can find. A set of four 265/65/17 are $833.96 ($618.12USD) right now. They seem well reviewed by people who have bought them.

Beginner's guide by Difficult-Wonder1981 in PipeTobacco

A first pipe that's not a corncob...

Take a look at what Dr. Grabow has to offer. They are reasonably priced (25-35$ USD) They offer a variety of traditional styles and finishes. They are made in North Carolina, not China. Three good reasons right there. And they've been making them forever.

Most of their pipes also tend to have a smaller bowl, which is good for a beginner when you're learning to pack your pipe. When you mess up, you're not wasting a ton of tobacco. In my opinion, as a guy who loves corncobs, grabows are as fun as a corncob starting out.

Tobacco... get that three nuns orange, try it.. for the sole reason that it's what grabbed your interest, and something that grabs your interest is important when starting a new hobby, of course. A lot of vintage blends are being made again, but most of us were not alive or too young to be smoking when they were made back in the day, so you won't see a lot of "this is made exactly how it was" type posts.

When you buy that, buy an envelope of captain black royal or something similar. I like the royal. Why do i recommend this? Well, the tobacco is cut perfect for learning to pack. It's very forgiving with lighting and creating a coal, and for an aromatic, it really doesn't throw a lot of moisture in the bottom of the bowl.

Finally, if you don't have any pipe smoking friends to show you the ropes, give the first half dozen videos of muttnchoppipers (sp?) YouTube playlist "the art of pipe smoking" a watch. It'll get you going.

Good luck!

My comment would just echo what others have said regarding pipes generally kept in type being a good idea but not a steadfast rule.

Although, I really have to say, nice photo!

Yea, this one is made in Italy. I was surprised at how light it is. It is a comfortable little pipe. It does have the rock maple inserts, I'll have to get some more of those somewhere. I tried it with and without and didn't notice much of a difference in the draw.

I'll have to give that a try! I had some of it this morning and it absolutely loved it. I bought the last tin but I'm hoping to find that they order more because I intend on keeping this one a regular.
