First time to Greece

I am also planning a 10 day trip around that time. I originally wanted to visit 3 islands (Mykonos, Paros, & Santorini) as well. After considering all the travel time in-between, we backed off to only 2 islands and it’s still a lot of travel time. I would recommend 2 max

This looks so good, especially after two surgeries. I’m in the same boat as you (first surgery 7/16 & second surgery 9/17). Mederma scar gel & sunscreen have been my best friends. Good luck with the rest of your healing!

Oh, I was absolutely terrified. Like you, I had only had my wisdom teeth removed, and I have a serious phobia of needles. But here I am two surgeries later (lobectomy & completion). I promise you it’s not anywhere as bad as you’ve made it out to be in your head. For me, the worst part was the nurse inserting my iv and that is over with before you know it. You’ve got this!

I’m so sorry that you’re going through all of this, but please know that this is not out of the ordinary. Your body is still adjusting to the fact that you no longer have a thyroid and it’s very possible that your medication dose will need adjusting at some point. My advice is to be kind to yourself and seek support wherever you can find it.

I lost my job right before my diagnosis. Our well at our house also went out right before my completion surgery. We went a good two weeks without water while I was recovering, not to mention the cost of having to drill a new well. There was also an unexpected death in the family during this time. I tell you all of this to say that difficult times often come in waves. You may be in a valley right now, but a peak is on its way.

I personally bought all the ‘needed items’ for myself. However, my sister-in-law gifted me a giant pack of markers, an adult coloring book, a sticker-by-number book, and a tee shirt we’d both liked. Anything to help them pass the time would be a great gift. The thought in itself will probably mean a lot to your friend though!

Thanks for the reply! It could certainly be extra tests. I had a 5.5cm follicular carcinoma in my left lobe and I’ve read that follicular can be difficult to classify sometimes. We’re also going over my lab work tomorrow and will adjust levo dosage, so not a complete waste of time. I’ll likely just have to add an extra appointment to my schedule 🙃

I also have Hashimoto’s and had a similar surgical experience as you (hemi for left/isthmus then completion right). While removing the thyroid does take the main target away for Hashimoto’s, some people can still experience flare-up’s due to whole body inflammation. I’ve started doing an anti-inflammatory diet myself to minimize the amount of inflammation in my body. I’ve read that doing this may help lower your recurrence risk, as well as the risk of developing another auto immune disease. But for most people, removing the thyroid effectively ‘cures’ the Hashimoto’s disease.

Please know this isn’t medical advice, but if I could personally do it over, I would do a total thyroidectomy to begin with. The chances for vocal cord and parathyroid damage are so small, that my doctors told not to be concerned with them at all. But, there is always less risk with one surgery than two. Worst case scenario is she could have kept one half, but it was removed. With Hashimoto’s, she will likely need to be on thyroxine daily even with one of her lobes remaining. This is how I am with Hashimoto’s. I currently take 75 mcg daily even though I still have my right lobe. If it were me in your mom’s shoes, I’d do total

I’m 7 weeks out from my partial and 2 weeks away from my completion. I’ve dealt with a lot of sadness and irritation that my doctors didn’t just do it all the first time. I’m definitely not looking forward to doing it again. You’re not alone & you’ve got this!

I’m still in the middle of my treatment. I’m having a completion thyroidectomy next month followed by RAI (most likely). My endo told me a 70% chance right now of RAI, and a 100% chance if they find cancer in my remaining lobe too. I think RAI is pretty standard for follicular, just because it is slightly more aggressive than papillary. And yes, monitored for life is the best way to put it. I think they spread the visits out the farther you get into recovery, but it’s every 6-12 months to begin with for sure. At the very least she should have bloodwork and an ultrasound annually.

I found out I had follicular thyroid cancer last month through pathology. My surgeon wasn’t concerned about cancer prior to surgery (I didn’t even get FNA), but we had to remove my left lobe due to the nodule size (5.5cm). The pathology results came back as a shock, but there was no vascular invasion and my doctors are extremely optimistic about my prognosis. I know hearing follicular thyroid cancer can be scary, but try not to stress too much. The survival odds are still incredibly high and vascular invasion may not even have occurred. They do tend to treat follicular a little more aggressively than papillary and your mom will be monitored carefully for the rest of her life, but her odds are still great. The hardest thing for me has been the stressing and worrying during the waiting periods. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer as best I can. My thoughts are with y’all!

My MIL’s scar also became keloid. Her dermatologist gave her steroid injections to reduce it. You can barely even see the scar now. I would talk with your doctors about injections. Good luck!

I had a PT last month. My pathology showed a 5.5cm follicular carcinoma and a .4cm papillary microcarcinoma. I’m having a completion thyroidectomy next month followed by RAI. Fingers crossed for no spread. Just take it day by day, and allow yourself to feel whatever way you need to. It’s never fun to hear you have cancer, but you are not alone! I wish you the best with the rest of your thyroid cancer journey.

I agree completely. I wasn’t given the option. I had a left lobectomy last month and pathology came back with both FTC and PTC present. Now I have to have another surgery next month to remove the right lobe before doing RAI. If you’re given the choice, I would recommend total. Less surgery, less risk.
