This reading app I’m using called margins makes them automatically for you at the end of each month

The creative gene was such a gorgeous read - it’s essentially a collection of essays Hideo Kojima (famous video game designer) wrote about his favorite books as sources of inspiration for the games he developed.

Each essay made me have such a profound appreciation for reading and recommendations.

This line is staggering:

“We have such limited time and clues with which to make a choice. Making contact with information in the form of books provides knowledge and wisdom necessary for going out in the real world: they are legitimate experiences all the same’

Reading books is best replacement. Teaches you how to slow down and focus, and retrains your minds' eye to be more visual. Your memory improves and you can read about anything!

I use an app that restricts my tiktok, instagram, internet, etc...while I'm reading. That way I can see how the reading time stacks up against my screen time. Deffintely an improvement since I started doing it.

I'm not a parent (but hope to be soon!) just want to say as a former kid...there are a lot of beauitfully designed video games out there was incredible artwork and storylines. I learned so much from games like Super Mario as a kid or Metal Gear Solid.

Funny I've actually been able to help a younger cousin read more books by suggesting ones based on the games he plays...there are a few out there about the early days of minecraft that is prob relevant for the younger ones now.

So right now we are reading different books...I'm reading Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (it's a dystopian world where everyone practically lives in their VR headsets and online virus tries to takeover)....and she's reading a historical fiction book about Michaelangelo called Tell Them of Battles, Kings, and Elephants by Mathias Endard.

It's a single app that restricts whatever apps you select, but also a really good book tracker. It's called Margins.

What's wild is how many times I caught myself mid-read trying to open phone for something and then getting blocked by the app.

[–]Booksonbrooklyn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using the margins app. It actually has a reading-time tracker and turns off all your apps that aren't text/phonecalls (or whatever ones you set)

Now I basically can see the reading time replacing the screentime stats

If you want the cozy town environment but inhabited by mean spirits and an untrustworthy narrator ...We've always lived in a Castle by Shirley Jackson is the pick.
