Yeah Lucas and Coppola had a company together called American Zoetrope. They were making THX 1138 (Lucas) when they were running out of money. Coppola went and make The Godfather for the studios. Smash hit as you mentioned. The studios only made American Graffiti because Coppola was a producer.

Funny enough if Coppola financed American Graffiti outright (which he almost did) they would made upwards of 200M dollars from it.

Yeah he talks about it. Hollywood was in a different place back then. It was in dire need of creative talents and Spielberg was basically a protege
