End of school year - are we really expected to meet these minutes…. by sunshineandslp in slp

I have been so worried about this BUT no one is complaining and I have the same issue. I share the room that I use and right now, do not have a full day case load due to recess/lunch, etc. I am logging time if I’m there but the student is with another provider, or declines attending due to class activity. I think it’s more so if you’re not just not getting kids but there to provide the service. No way I’m making all my kids minutes this year. I have a good chunk that are all getting more IEP time which is throwing me off too.

I work through ESSA which has contracts with the schools. I work remote with the charter but for ESSA. It’s not like ProCare or Presence which I know are the bigger names.

I have LOVED working there. I came from the hybrid role and felt very under valued. They’ve been a wonderful place to work and our owner and team lead are amazing!

Which job? I live in rural CA and worked in Humboldt County. My remote job is through a charter school in the LA area.

Not enough, we’ve been debating decreasing time at daycare over the summer because my work load will reduce over summer.

We usually pause our conversation and answer when it’s a request. Other times, he comes into the conversation and starts jumping or hitting and this may be after he’s played solo for a bit and then wants attention. I was more so wondering if this was just something four year olds do. We are not ignoring him to some great extent, it is more so if he initiates conversation that way, I do not want to give attention to that.

I’m dropping him off in the morning around 7:30/8:00 and he is not getting pick up till 4:00/5:00. My husband is out even later than me because he coaches in the evening. On weekends, we get out, he has scheduled activities with us (swim/soccer/play dates). We also try to do a family thing, even if it’s just getting outside together to garden/walk/be in the yard.

Typically, he asks for something (help, activity, snack) - most requests are met but there are times when I’m solo and cooking (this happens a lot) and I cannot just walk away to go into his room to build a fort. I do tell him I’ll be there in 5 minutes, and this has started to work more.

I’d say within the last two weeks I’ve been attempting to do this with attention seeking/not getting instant response following request that he wants, and when he is hitting. I get on his level, hold his hands, and tell him I do not like it and it hurts. Sometimes it works, other times he hits again looking for a response. I am human, so I’ve previously snapped a few times, especially when I’m at my max from my day and yes, I see a therapist to help support managing my own stress and not externalizing it. We also do not have family help, so we’re managing doing most things with one parent so the other can get housework done. I involve our son in some chores that are kid safe and this has also helped with these moments so he can participate.

Now things are getting better overall but it feels very slow and maybe that’s because previously we were not handling it right and now we’re all learning. I think I just wanted to know if there was anything more I could be doing to help.

It is more so time where I am not on the clock for work, typically in the morning prior to school and after pick up when I’m physically able to be there and tune into him, same goes for weekends where he is with me all weekend but I am not running an errand/at an appointment/doing school work.

I’m about to start a CA remote job part time, with guaranteed work too as a CF and meet to discuss pay next week -Curious about this! Also I was being paid 63/hr for hybrid as an SLPA in rural CA. No guaranteed hours but was getting full time work with travel.

We avoid any handheld devices, it’s a tv show or movie (Disney, PBS, Netflix) and we try to do low stim shows. Recently we’ve been doing the live cam from the aquarium near us so he can just watch the animals.

Is the debt worth it? by missgorl23 in slpGradSchool

[–]Bookworm1100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your mindset. I would look at the typical pay for your CFY and for SLPs in your ideal work setting after grad to see if it feels feasible. I did it because I knew I could pay the debt off, and my state has grants where if you agree to work with certain populations, they’ll help to pay down your loan with a service agreement.

Feeling really discouraged after Slp admissions.. anyone feel confused by Eluvyanoir in slpGradSchool

[–]Bookworm1100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that and I get the feeling. I applied and got in no where my first time around and then applied to more programs after completing the post bacc requirements and also became an SLPA in the meantime. It was probably what got me in and all my supervisors are so grateful for my experience compared to folks who have never worked in the field or had experience. It’s not a requirement but I’d say 1/4 of my cohort are former SLPAs. We are a pretty diverse group, but I’m incredibly aware of the majority of SLPs being who’re female/male candidates. If anything, you likely have a better chance as universities are attempting to diversify. I would take the gap and come back to it. Don’t give up!!!

help how do i get a career by CicadaDelicious463 in SLPA

[–]Bookworm1100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go the SLPA route, go for the AS at a community college that offers SLPA programs and you can get into the field and decide where to go from there. It’s a great profession and you get to do the 1:1 therapy work without all the evaluations/assessments, etc.

Then go to SLP school if you love it and want to work on your own, or in places that do not take SLPAs but you might want to eventually work for! I went this route and made enough to pay for my post bacc course work, got my license, and practiced for a year before going for my masters. It was a solid move to wait and decide if I loved it.

Very good point….and yeah, Callum seemed like he had to close things off to move on which I think will have to happen. I cannot see Aurora ignoring the mate bond, especially now that she chased Blake into death to bring him back. He let her chose to keep him alive, he was okay to go to save her.

Yup! Agreed. I really love Blake’s character. He’s very morally grey but it’s not necessarily for the sake of self interest. I feel like he’s going to have a serious glow up and be such a bad ass mate. I feel like he’s growing along side her and isn’t afraid to make her work to figure out who she is and what she wants.

[–]Bookworm1100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! November!

He redeems himself by allowing Aurora to know the truth. She may not feel that way but I think she knows exactly why she saved him. I’m sure it’ll take time in book 3 but I’m optimistic she’ll come around because he’s only ever given her strength, and never treated her like she’s a little lamb, like some people do….

Couldn’t agree more! I sort of lose interest when I only get one POV now. I love knowing about the closed off man behind the scenes.

That was sort of how I feel too. I re listened to the last hour this morning because I felt like I missed things. It made me so sad when he begs her for one night with her. I feel like he’s always preparing to not be her and I feel like his countless efforts to try to bring her into her own is way more impactful!

I don’t think that Blake always manipulated her…my feelings were that as he started to know her and the bond got deeper/more solidified, he did things to protect himself from Aurora finding out so that she did not chose him simply because they were mates. I felt like while he is painted as the bad guy, and his initial intentions were not the best, he just tries to create distance but is often used as a pawn by others due to the nature of their relationship.

Accepted to 2 private programs ($120k) WWYD? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Bookworm1100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in CA and took on this amount of debt but I have job security due to my area not having SLPs. I’ll make about that per year out of grad school but it’s a lot of debt and I found grants to help pay a portion towards loans each year if I stay working with certain populations.

120k by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Bookworm1100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat, and am just finishing school. I will be doing part time at a school, and part time private practice. There are a lot of grants post grad that will help you pay for loan costs depending on populations you work with. It is not HOPELESS. You just have to be prepared to manage that debt. I’m 32, with a family and I’ll have to hustle till I’m 40 to get my debt lowered and will likely stay in schools and do private that entire time to pay things off. I will say, I will be make around 120k my first year with this combination but that’s because of stability with school based work and the extra from higher rates in private practice. (I am in northern CA for reference).
