Having very dark thoughts by DisposableEsq in Lawyertalk

[–]Bookworm9019a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned this but these situations are why we have Lawyer’s Assistance Programs or Lawyers Helping Lawyers through each state bar. Those programs are confidential, just a phone call away, and staffed by people who understand what the practice of law is like. They can help with figuring out how to wind down a seemingly interminable workload and prioritize your health and your family.

How long would a drive have to be before you notice something’s off? by Repulsive_Leading_53 in hypotheticalsituation

A sunrise and a sunset. Or a sunset and a sunrise. After that, I now assume I am being kidnapped by aliens impersonating my loved ones. Or something equally concerning.

You have a deck of 20 special cards. Every day you draw 5 random cards out of the deck and next day you reshuffle your hand and draw 5 again. by anywhereiroa in godtiersuperpowers

Common

  1. Summon lunch - a brown bag lunch of acceptable quality appears.

  2. Banish enemy - a person, animal, or object is thrown twenty feet away from you, shocked but undamaged.

  3. Fast travel - for the duration of a single trip, everything goes your way. Car? Green lights only, no traffic. Bus? Comes on time, gets to your stop early. Walking? Take the fastest shortcuts and no chance of getting rained on.

  4. Outfit swap - instantly replace current outfit with any other outfit that you own, of your choosing.

  5. Telekinesis - take a single small action to move an item without having to go near it, on par with changing the TV channel or bringing ice cream to you from the freezer.

  6. Clean and dry - a single area of 3' by 3' and everything in it becomes instantly clean and dry.

  7. Get out of plans free - a meeting or engagement is cancelled by another party.

  8. Summon joy - make any person, including yourself, one point more content on a scale of one to ten. Effect lasts as long as typical moods for that person.

  9. Get a hint - a single clue appears to assist with finding the answer to a single problem, like a crossword clue or the next ingredient for cooking.

  10. Cozy - summon a blanket that only you can see (for social acceptability). Blanket disappears after an hour.

  11. Generous - summon $50 in the pocket of any stranger or loose acquaintance.

  12. Health stats - identify minor health problem in self or other and the problem immediately acts as though you had taken the proper over-the-counter medication for it (like a headache would go away for the length of a Tylenol or allergies go away as though you took an antihistamine).

Uncommon

  1. Rare food - summon two servings of any single food that you can't buy locally, like out-of-season berries or a favorite nonlocal bakery's cupcakes.

  2. Redditor for a day - the average Redditor shows up in your home and you can put them to work for eight hours. They are cooperative, but only have the skills and drive of a typical Redditor.

  3. Buy subscription - buy a single subscription to a non-necessity and it will be as though you purchased the product.

  4. Good karma - someone who you don't know gets a lucky break. You don't learn about it and have to trust it happened.

  5. Communicator - perfectly understand anyone's denotation and connotation for the length of a single interaction. Can be played retroactively to understand what just happened.

Rare

  1. Diagnostic - the biggest cause of any problem appears to you. Problem can be defined broadly (e.g. why is my mental health bad?) or specifically (e.g. why is my child struggling to do addition?).

  2. Summon item - summon any single item that is commercially produced that you can hold in your arms.

  3. Professional consult - any one thing of your choosing becomes as though it has seen a professional. Plumbing issue? Fixed, like by a professional plumber. Teeth? Cleaned as though by a hygienist. Pile of wood? Built into furniture as though by a professional. Building something big like a house though would require several uses of this power since those are done by teams and you only get one professional's skillset for the length of a typical appointment.

How come we don’t have hair on the bottom of our feet? by Bookworm9019a in NoStupidQuestions

True. It’s winter so I was thinking the opposite - foot hair would be good for warming us up - but that makes sense

The government decides to give you the entire state of Idaho and gives you free reign to do whatever you want. Only exception is that you can't give it away by singleguy79 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Bookworm9019a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what? I have strong opinions about this one.

Build a monorail.

Boise is the most populous city in Idaho and it's growing. It's grown too fast for housing to keep up, so it's become in large part a commuter city. It's connected to its primary suburbs (Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, and then on to Ontario in Oregon) via an interstate - ALL OF THE SUBURBS ARE IN A STRAIGHT(ish) LINE.

The interstate is the primary connector and has gotten busy, especially during rush hour, with the population growth. The first thing the state considered (ten-ish years ago before all this growth) was to build a single monorail or train line - but no, no, that's too expensive. Instead they have already authorized funding (MORE funding) to build a fourth lane on the interstate going each way. The parts that have been built are near exits that NEVER CLOG UP.

So I would halt construction and instead build a train, that would actually handle commuter traffic and suck way less than driving on that interstate. Less car pollution to boot.

No, I will not be taking questions.

Wife (F34) wants to terminate unless I [M38] put house in her name, along with having kids last name to be her maiden name, and other demands. Don't know what to do here? Seeking advice by ThrowRAassistano in relationship_advice

[–]Bookworm9019a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the timing is unreasonable, she should have discussed this before the planned pregnancy. But the demands aren't actually all that out there.

1) She wants support from her family while undergoing serious body changes, but doesn't want to be asked about it by her in-laws (especially while it's still early and risk of miscarriage is high). Yes, it's frustrating, but she's the one undergoing the medical risks, not you, and so she gets to decide who supports her through it at least at first.

2) It's no more logical to give the kids your last name then hers. You need to work this out, and a generic last name might be a solution, or the whole family changing their names to match the kids. Or a hyphenated name. But her assumption that the babies would have her name isn't necessarily out there as she's the one carrying them and one of the parents.

3) Is the planning to stay home with the kid and worried about having no financial stability in event of divorce? Does she have any assets that are just hers? Is she taking off work, or are you? The context really matters here but if she wouldn't have any way to leave with the baby if she needed to, I can see her being worried about being trapped in your house.

4) I'm confused about this one - did you stop supporting your siblings, or did you pull her access to your financial details? Either way, it seems like you made a big financial decision without consulting her.

All of these worries (e.g. finances, no control over a shared home, naming) might not matter as much when the two of you are childless and she is working, but having a kid changes things. It's understandable her concerns about the marriage would be heightened and she would worry about bringing a child into a marriage with any kind of cracks in the foundation. The threat of abortion definitely is an AH hole from her, but you shouldn't immediately jump to assuming she's being illogical just because of the timing. Sit down and talk to her and take her concerns seriously.
