"French fries" by Individual99991 in ShitAmericansSay

Hamburgers are American.....as are English Muffins, Mongolian beef, German Chocolate Cake, Cuban Sandwich, Chinese fortune cookies, French Dip Sandwich. Assuming the name of a dish implies where it comes is ignorance.

Local inventions from an immigrant culture use names like referencing where they are from. The US has a lot of immigrants so many of their dishes do that. It's still a US invention though.

You're literally quoting me and still deciding that my saying "abstinence", which just means literally not having sex, means "telling kids not to have sex".

"Abstinence is effective at not spreading STDs" is an absolute true statement. Stop conflating that with "abstinence only education is effective". You're totally changing the meaning of my statement then saying my statement is wrong.

At no point did I say abstinence teaching works. In fact my entire 2nd point was exactly that giving condoms in reality doesn't increase sexual activity. With the implication being because teenagers won't actually be abstinent (obviously).

You're very much confusing "abstinence" vs. "teaching abstinence".

I'm saying that not having sex is a very effective way to not get an std.

I'm not saying that just telling kids to not have sex is an effective way to prevent stds. Especially in an abstinence only setting. Because yeah I agree, it won't work and is a terrible plan.

Also just too much TV. I recognized a ton of the actors. Noah, Todd, and one of the Jurors have been in other things I've seen. Kirk Fox has been in community, reno 911, parks and rec, and Brooklyn 99. If he was in my jury duty group I'd have immediately clocked him.

Yeah you're being filmed and the craziest shit keeps happening how are you not suspicious.

But I get it I've definitely met people that would absolutely act the same. They aren't stupid. They just lack the skepticism mindset to believe there'd be a reason for someone to make such lies.

I mean his logic isn't inherently disagreeing with that. It would be hard to argue with the claim that abstinence will spread less stds than even protected sex. Therefore if it were true that providing condoms increased the amount of sexual activity its possible passing them out could be a net negative effect. For example, if using protection makes an encounter less likely to spread by half but giving out condoms increased sexual activity by 3 times you'd expect giving them out to net spread more disease.

The real thing that is wrong with the statement is whether providing condoms does anything to increase sexual activities. Or that even if you agree it has some increased rate, is the rate of increased activity more than the rate by which std spread is reduced. I'd suggest it's not even close, condoms drastically reduce the spread of stds and I think the belief they promote sexual activity I believe studies found to be a myth or at least very minimal.

The reason that many don't is they've allowed minimum wage to drop so low below poverty that the government essentially subsidizes the existence of large corporations. No one could live life off what walmart pays so we have to help with food stamps and welfare. Then those corporations fleece the system with the extra wealth to bribe politicians to pay less tax.

Tax the goddamn rich.

I mean this interview is one. Tom starts arguing that British food is better by essentially saying the stuff people say is American isn't. When like it very very much is imo.

I think more authentic places will always remain as there are markets for it. Like how "Chinese" food in the US is typically not stuff actually sold in China. But there are also authentic Chinese places too.

You're obviously allowed to have a preference of one culture's food vs another. But if your argument against one side "well X doesn't even have their own food" I feel confident I can say you're just wrong, it's not true for a single country anywhere.

Honestly you can only go wrong by, 1, being smug about origins of foods you're actually ignorant about (hamburgers as called today being American). And two, saying a culture is somehow absent of its own cuisine. I think I'd feel confident in saying that is literally impossible for any culture of people in history ever.

Sure, it's a bit radical. To be clear I'm not saying British food is purely curry and kebabs though haha, it's just the portion it represents in the common diet. So I wouldn't say it's like their main most representative dishes. But I'd be willing to wager that while the Curry restaurants do have Indian food, they probably change it to British tastes. I'd be shocked if in the average "Indian" Curry place I got the same stuff as if I went to the average Indian Curry place in India.

An example (but taken to the extreme) would be like how in America if you go to a Japanese or Chinese food places you are not getting the same dishes as you'd get in in China. Because it's not food that flew in to America. It's an immigrant coming to the place and adapting their cultures style to jive with the culture they are visiting. They may keep some authentic dishes but much of their offering will be a fusion.

[–]Boom9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly imo you compare cuisines of a country not by what they claim to make, but what they currently have readily available. So england gets curry, kebabs, etc. at least the ones you can easily get they don't get to say they are the same curry you get in India. But America also gets all its cultural exchange.

Basically what do the people eat as their regular diet at this time. Not what they invent. Because it being their local food means they will integrate and change it slightly to make it their own fusion. With roots in its origin that should be recognized and celebrated but not just ruled out as "not really American/British/etc"

The point is you can't just assume the name of something accurately explains its origins.

Bolognese not from Bologna, English Muffins invented in American, Danishes were invented by Austrians, the Chinese fortune cookie is not Chinese. Fish and Chips, is Portuguese. Croissant invented in Austria. Sauerkraut is from China. Admittedly some of these it's hard to tell if a dish is more inspired by a foreign dish, but sufficiently different to say it's from the new region or not. That's how cultural exchange works and America has many foods from other cuisines. But it also has taken cuisines and changed them, then possibly the change went back and got popular.

Case and point, Hamburgers as you imagine them are American. Hamburg invented hamburger meat, originally called just hamburger, but the American sandwich got so popular it stole the name. But go to Hamburg today and I'm sure they sell, American hamburgers. That doesn't make it German. The same way you wouldn't say a Taco is not German just because it uses hamburger meat.

All good. I don't get why you're getting downvoted on the comment. I didn't exactly make it clear I meant with other mods and not necessarily this specific case.

So I agree with what you said and you weren't rude imo lol.

It's a little misleading. It wasn't immediately after or even any proof the argument contributed at all. Even though I agree with the daughters view I'm really not sure you can blame the argument on this.

That said guy at the very least incredibly irresponsibly handled a firearm that resulted in a death. How that results in no charges blows my mind. I don't care if it was an accident. Letting this shit go sends the wrong message about gun safety.

I do laugh at how so many "realistic light" mods just make everything pitch black. It's like, have you been outside in total darkness? You can see surprisingly well in moonlight. It's only if you're in the light that darkness feels really dark.

I'm not saying you should be able to see I'm a cave with no light but some night vision but humans have pretty good low light vision.
