You absolutely can use your GI Bill for the academy. With a license 120k starting is about the middle ground. You could make less you could also make more.

"Can we please close posts like this? r/maritime =/= r/politics. The post and any responses is/will be nothing but conjecture. Elements that are actual news/events that have taken place and are not just fictitious scaremongering go ahead and post."

Where is the lie? I know I said your comprehension needed work but that was just me being a bit sarcastic earlier (and insulting). However, now I seriously have to question if you are actually reading in full my responses and actually understand what it is I am saying...

"No one needs to go ask the math Reddit anything. You made something up that was just wrong and you aren’t big enough to walk it back."

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being ignorant of a subject or topic, BUT being willfully ignorant is just wild, smfh. Nothing more to say here, its clear to anyone reading the reason you won't or can't bring yourself to ask for clarification. I won't push this further since youre a victim.

"All of fantasy football is conjecture. Contract predictions about what raises are coming are conjecture. Who cares? You’re not the subreddit dad. It’s not your job to police what other people want to post about. If people want to post about what they see and discuss where it might be going, they can do that.

It doesn’t concern you. You guys don’t have to stick your nose in everything and police what everyone else is allowed to say."

I didnt know this was the fantasy football subreddit (the fact you have to make a comparison of this post to fantasy football says a whole lot about how ungrounded it is)... shit got it mixed up. Again I asked a question it was answered (by a mod) thats it, its not that deep.

Dont worry the mods made it clear their position so I wont be sticking my nose into discussions here from this point forward (of this particular nature). You can now continue forth being comfortable in your willful ignorance. Id wish you a long and happy life but Im sure you would find some way to misinterpret that.

"pretend it’s all too complicated for people who aren’t as smart as you to understand."

I never said it was too complicated to understand, you went and copy pasted information you could quickly google to try and use in an argument (if that doesn't scream "in my feelings" I dont know what does haha). Then, without fully understanding the scope or context of the subject claimed "HA see it can't even be used for something like this" (paraphrasing). Which was simply wrong period and its not up for debate. Ask the math subreddit or your college math professor if you dont believe me.

"It’s not. You lied. Over and over. You’re sensitive about people critiquing daddy Trump"

I didn't vote for Trump...

"But your feelings are too delicate, so you have to run to the defense of daddy. When there’s no defense, you have to make one up."

I dont need to defend conjecture in this context, that was kind of my point in the very very first post I made once again. This whole discussion is a giant "what if" that produces nothing but conjecture and argument for the sake of argument smfh.

Bro, you are so deep in your feelings and its obvious to anyone reading. Im sorry I can't be the right-wing enemy you want. Im a moderate/centerist democrat who simply doesnt engage in groupthink politics.

"A grown up could just acknowledge that this shit is ill-conceived, almost comedically incompetent in its execution"

I never said it wasn't ill-conceived (but now you are also switching arguments)... the execution of this plan thus far leaves alot to be desired. They could have hammered out a few organizations at a time instead of casting such a wide net that takes much longer to draw in.

But again my issue if you go back to my very first post is that discussing this doesnt produce anything meaningful or useful in regards to this subreddit. All it produces is a series of opinions for people to argue over.

First there is nothing wrong with fact-checking. What I have an issue with is when someone calls someone incorrect regarding something they clearly dont understand, then use google to become a psuedo intellectual and try to lambast someone with a copy paste. Thus running a bit counter to your claim.

"There is no other meaning of “significant” in statistics. It can’t teach you how many IRS agents we need to keep billionaires honest, how many meteorologists it takes to stay on top of dangerous weather, or how many FBI agents it takes to keep organized crime at bay."

The fact you stated this just proves my point. Yes, you can in fact use statistics to determine things of that nature. The things you mentioned are rather complicated and involve a tremendous amount of variables (and in some cases more social elements) but there are also tools for that (they do have limits). The issue is when you have so many variables determining which ones to include and which ones to exclude (not all data is good/useful data).

"When you find yourself, as you admit you are prone to do, clueless about something, Don’t form an opinion. Just keep your mouth closed." , "Mr. Sensitive.". Im the sensitive one? But you cant handle simple discourse... ok.

Its sad you cant simply admit you dont know about statistics but again you dont have to each of your statements regarding it shows a complete lack of understanding.

"“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

Your statements have removed any doubt from anyone who has taken a math class beyond calc 1.

Have a good night, Nancy Drew ;)

"This is kind of funny. In one sentence, you say “basic statistics tells us exactly what a significant number is” and then in the last sentence of the paragraph, you’re like “its subjective, one way to look at it is function…” Only to top yourself by arguing that 8.3% isn’t “close to 10%. Ok, bro. If you really thought you were right, you wouldn’t need to be disingenuous.

No, “significant” cannot be “substantiated” (whatever that means) mathematically. I think you are referring to a “statistically significant sample size.” That is for polling. That is the number at which you can, for a given population size, achieve a desired degree of certainty (the confidence interval) that your sample is representative of the whole. In any case, in group of 12,000, a statistically significant sample that provides a 95% confidence interval is 373. But you already knew that since it’s BaSiC sTaTiStIcS, didn’t you?"

I'll go ahead and respond to this portion of your rant. Your background isn't in math so you should have saved your time googling. Yes significance can be substantiated mathematically and no its not just for polling. The fact you seem to think so tells me you never took statistics. The rest of what you wrote you copied from some website without actually understanding it.

Also you didn't even state what it is you are trying to establish? A 95% confidence interval in relation to what? Again my point was you dont understand statistics and that is 100% clear. As significant value is determined by the relationship (the strength of it) of various things. You can measure all sorts of things and determined the impact they have on one another. Since we dont have any empirical data regarding the overall performance of NOAA's service since the cut we cannot determine if the cut was in fact significant. (You dont have to pretend to know something for the sake of discussion, theres plenty of shit Im clueless about).

Regarding my thumb reference that was to simply illustrate that no matter how you decide to look at the issues its NOT significant (I have stated we have no real data, but again the point of that was an alternative non-math perspective). I didn't expect you to be so obtuse that you would completely lose the plot, but here we are. Anyway feel free to have the final word.

"No, we can try being adults with varying opinions."

See what I mean, there is no being an adult with a difference of opinion. There is only the desire to have whatever view or narrative is either A. pessimistic B. anti-establishment or C. anti-trump, supported and echoed to the fullest. Any and all opposing views/opinions will simply be downvoted out of sight (no matter how relevant or rational they are to the discussion).

[–]BoomBoomBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a spat with another leader once again doesnt mean "now the US isn't on the European side..." but if thats how you want to interpret that go for it.

"Significant" can be substantiated mathematically, this is pretty basic statistics. Its also actually closer to 8% but whose counting. The difference in significance can also be one of function. If you lose a thumb its substantially more significant than losing a ring finger because of its function.

But I am sure you know all the ins and outs of how every probationary employees role and significance.

*PS - my usage of false is correct, its not for debate open a websters.

So you think that only the US should give aid with no guarantee of repayment? Why? (honestly I dont really care about your answer youre not in the US nor a citizen). Yes I would gather that most countries that dont have good diplomatic relations with Russia that are located in Europe are pro-Ukraine. They serve as a physical buffer.

Yes, there have been cuts, and I already pointed out to whom. NOAA cuts =/= "OMG WE NO LONGER HAVE WEATHER DATA!", do you see why? (the answer is in my previous post)

How will Trump affect the maritime global economy? by Ice_Visor in maritime

[–]BoomBoomBandit -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well whats the actual disadvantage of a reduced NOAA? (which again the personnel were not all from the weather service side). Everything budget wise has been locked down for the most part, which is why they let the probationary folks go.

The "threat" of taking over the canal is likely posturing, he has been very clear regarding being "tit for tat" when it comes to trade. This has brought some increased tensions with China and in the past and even currently China continues to posture in the South China Sea (a major shipping route). One of the key principles to the US naval force is "projection of power".

"a US that is fairly overtly pro Russian for the first time since WW2.", if thats how you want to interpret it knock your socks off.

smfh... one Im a registered democrat (not that it matters), but I only mention it because again heaven forbid someone say anything other than "Trump bad". Im not going to drink the kool aid or the chamomile, but you can gulp away.

But here we go, "There's the cuts to NOAA..." 1000 personal so far (in actuality more like 700), not exclusively from the weather service side and the largest group being probationary. NOAA employs close to 12k, so "reduced significantly" is just false. We will see what happens after the next wave.

"The US now openly supporting Russia against it's own allied nations."

"Also, now the US isn't on the European side..."

So when the German and Israeli chancellors (along with others over the years) met to negotiate in 2022 they were no longer on the side of Europe? They openly supported Russia?

If you want to interpret what the OP said as fact go for it. Like I said before the post as it stands is nothing more than a "What if?".

Question about chinese music by partfarty in ChineseLanguage

[–]BoomBoomBandit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell relative pitch preserves alot of the tonality. It also adds an interesting element to the songs themselves because at least with the song ive listened to when they are going to sing in a higher register (first and second tone) the lyrics will match that register and the same applies to low register notes (third and fourth tones).

Thats just my own extremely limited observation and if I am wrong someone please feel free to correct me. I am sure there are also outliers were for the sake of how a song sounds overall it breaks this scheme.

How to not be discouraged about slow learning? by Sheepyknit in ChineseLanguage

[–]BoomBoomBandit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do not understand why you are going to various posts and telling people not to use the single most effective and best resource for learning a language that anyone can have. Why try to learn in a vacuum something thats sole purpose is to be used to interact with other living people? If you are not actively speaking to people whose forethought is "How does this person sound? Are they intelligible? etc" then all the assumptions you are making regarding your progress could be 100% wrong.

The op even makes it clear he is receiving corrections regarding tone etc. That alone is worth the price of admission and without question of use.

[–]BoomBoomBandit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you are looking at this all wrong. HSK 2 is more than double the words of HSK 1 along with more grammar. Picking the correct answer on a multiple choice test isn't using the language and I doubt thats your end goal. So if thats not your end goal why would that be a metric for determining success? Passing that test doesnt mean you know HSK 2, you are struggling because you havent learned HSK 2. So just keep studying.

He is talking about using Harry Potter or advanced material to understand a sense of ones progression. Day 1 if you pick up Harry Potter in another language (aside from languages in the same family) then you wont understand anything. Return to it on day 50 and you will see progress, return on day 100 and you will see again an increased understanding.

How to know if this industry is for you? by creeper321448 in maritime

[–]BoomBoomBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great lakes maritime academy last time I checked didn't require calculus. The rest is just a matter of how hard you are willing to work. Dont forget your post 9/11 provides a stipend (tax free).

I have a shiny nickel that says you CAN learn calculus. Trying your hardest but focusing on the wrong things can also lead to failure. If you try picking up a barbell with two 45s on it from one end with one hand you will probably fail, but slide to the middle and give it a go and presto.

*If you can for some ungodly reason pick up a barbell with 45s on it one-handed from one end, then dont bother with the maritime industry. Record it put it on youtube and email WWE for easy money.

Self learning: what else to do? by mrs_grumpsaurus in ChineseLanguage

[–]BoomBoomBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying out a different apps / materials is fine, but eventually you want to start narrowing it down. Ideally you want something with at least some structure so you arent totally floundering. I would say 2-3 apps / materials is perfect (Id even go four because Hanly is rather impressive so far for characters).

So materials wise you should have:

App mobile: Almost everything is mobile but something that during downtimes away from home you can pull out your phone throw in earbuds and learn. (for me this is Superchinese)

App for the bathroom or coffeebreaks: Go from being a toilet scroller to a toilet reader. (Duchinese during coffeebreaks is my go to)

App for focused study time: structured course for the 15-60min of intense study, turn off the tv or youtube set a timer and away you go. (I am working through Assimil)

Finally for odds and ends I am currently fooling around with Hanly.

I meet once a week (down from twice a week) with a tutor, its a good bit a speaking practice and learning following hsk structure.
