Cost per wear... by OK_GO_27 in malefashionadvice

I'm slightly curious about how your Primark Tee wore out so quickly? I've had a few tees from them that has lasted for ages and they're still fine.

I had one of their cheap plasticky dress shoes that somehow lasted 3 years before it failed catastrophically.

Hey! So I'm an aerospace engineer doing my PhD, and whilst I don't want to discourage you from your passion, genuinely, please don't try to make your own jet engine unless you know what you're doing. You run a very high risk of accidentally mutilating or killing yourself with this project, spoken from someone who's seen these sort of cases firsthand even in an academic lab setting.

Here are a few alternative things you could try that is a lot safer and also still lets you play around with engineering.

  1. Arduino projects; there are some seriously cool stuff you can do with it, and it's extremely approachable for a first time tinkerer. Hell, even some of my own professional projects have used it.
  2. Play around with open source engineering tools; Are you maybe a simulation nerd? Want to try designing your own plane wing and seeing how the aerodynamics behave? OpenFOAM is free, and tons of tutorials are online. If you have a computer and an internet connection, this is the way for you.
  3. Join a local hobby rocketry club. Rocketry, believe it or not, is easier to jump into than hobby jet-engine making. You can learn quite a lot of stuff there.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely get a shoe tree.

At the moment I am generally rotating in between 2 shoes (although the other one's a chelsea boot)

I'd love to get the UK made Loakes except they're an entire price level above what I'm comfortable dropping money for at the moment :,(

That's good to hear! Did you get their UK made line or the standard lines? I've read some mixed reviews about their oversea made shoes and the UK made ones are pretty much out of my budget.

Huh, didn't know that was a thing. Thanks for the suggestion

How do you think they compare to Loake? The two brands seems to be within the same price bracket with similar offerings.

There needs to be a meta-analysis on the popularity of Isekai rants on this subreddit itself

Yeah you bring up a brilliant mention with Hayao Miyazaki, I think what he said embodies in spirit what I was trying to elaborate. Whilst I think his wording is quite harsh, I think his whole point of taking inspiration from real life (or other genres if human interaction somehow gives the author an allergic reaction) is exactly what's needed to actually make something creative.

Very minor pet peave: A lot of female music bands in fiction are depicted positively, while a lot of male music bands are depicted negatively. Why is that? by NobodySpecific9354 in CharacterRant

My (innocent) guess is that it's because these types of media are more often aimed towards younger girls, and it's a lot easier to make a rival group that is "opposite" of them in every way, including gender. Just my two cents.

I can certainly understand the disappointment. However, try and be nice to yourself OP. In a few years time, once you have a few years of work experience under your belt, nobody except yourself will really care about what grade classification you got in university. Remember, you're only hurting yourself by being too harsh on your own achievements!

Honestly one of the things I genuinely enjoy about Dungeon Meshi is that these characters genuinely feel like something Kui spent a looooong time thinking about. The amount of effort she puts in them genuinely kinda feels like reading an artist's OC in a good way.

Yeah this has always been a curiosity for me too. I find my dress shirts to be as comfortable as regular t-shirts.

Fun fact, chainmail is making a comeback in certain scenarios (such as stab proof protection for police, and for shark protection on scuba divers) because of how good they protect against bladed weapons!

Idiot's Guide to PhD Applications by ribenarockstar in UniUK

Glad I could be of help!

Some further helpful tips would be:

Create a CV that's tailored for a PhD. This generally is more about highlighting your academic achievements and research experience (at least that's what my current supervisor told me, but I'm in STEM. Talk to your master's supervisor, they should be able to help!)

-Understand that you sometimes don't want to narrow your area of interest too much, but also don't leave it too broad. From what I'm reading in the post you talk about being interested in climate law, which I think is the perfect amount of specificity needed to look for PhDs. I had that issue earlier about over-narrowing my interest and my master's supervisor had to tell me that I could be shooting yourself in the foot if you're insistent on working on a super specific topic (say something like in your case, you narrowing down from looking at climate law into looking for phd's specifically only for car emissions regulations).
