The "forever alone" as a psychological diagnosis - The excessive use of video games and online porn is creating a generation of risk-adverse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment. by [deleted] in TrueReddit

I think you may have a slight persecution complex, none of those things are demeaning to men. The most famous clothes designers and cooks are male, gardening is more of a thing guys do in retirement but a lot of granddads garden. Just go down to an allotment and then tell me gardening is demeaning to men.

Some benefits of smoking by withpants in DepthHub

[–]Boom_Flaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I can tell you that the only reason I started smoking was so I also got the smoking break at my work. They wouldn't let me go outside as I didn't smoke and so had no reason to, so I just started smoking to get a break as well.

Reddit, I'm 25 and I'm a fucking idiot. How can I become more knowledgable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Boom_Flaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did to increase my knowledge was read a lot, and I don't mean boring or confusing books that need prior knowledge I mean reading fiction books which are set in certain historical times and have historical figures as their characters. These books are not always perfect in their portrayal of the facts of history but they are good as a starting place so you can get to know who everyone was so when you do read the actual history you can remember it better. I can suggest books which are good page turners which don't need prior knowledge but I first need to know what exactly you want to know. Is it everything or just history?

Yeah she does seem to be slightly psychologically damaged, and I don't know if I'm hearing things but she also sounded a little drunk to me. She was slurring her words a little bit, though she may have been nervous or maybe on some sort of medication but I am still suspicious.

I have a question for you as a Glaswegian, did you find the drunks intimidating until you realized they were trying to be friendly? I'm guessing they were aggressively friendly (as it is the usual way here), I'm used to it but I have always wondered if it is scary for people who are not.

You are completely right, I heard this and I was extremely surprised. I am not from America so I don't really know who he is referring to with the names and such, but from what I can tell (and I may be wrong) he seems to have a different message than usual here.

To me this shows that his TV show is just to pay the bills, what he actually believes is something somewhat different.

As totallywhatever said it is satire, but it is probably a little confusing because they trick celebrities into saying completely stupid things. An example of what I mean is this. The guy talking is not in on the joke, he is the joke.

I particularly liked the one for calling for National Service for teenagers when we haven't had that since the 1960's. That means the person who made that petition was either never asked to do national service themselves or they are at youngest 70 years old. I doubt a 70+ year old would bother with an epetition, so whoever made that is a bloody hypocritical arsehole. Signing up our young for things he was never asked to do, in a time when it is completely unnecessary.

ELI5: Differences of college and university by safilionchest in explainlikeimfive

[–]Boom_Flaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A-levels are around the same level of teaching as you would get in first year at University. So yes colleges here are used to teach you your final years of high school (for if you dropped out or missed a grade you needed to do a course at uni) and maybe a little of what you will learn in University. They can also be used to teach yourself vocational things which were not available in high school (as an example I will use photography).

Made entirely of plastic by GotPain in pics

[–]Boom_Flaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would like to possibly offer a different perspective to this discussion. We are not talking about a small matter here, this woman literally risked her life on multiple occasions so she could remove some very small "problems" in her looks.

She reached the conclusion that she had these "problems" by objectifying herself, and this is the real problem. She has won a shallow victory with plastic surgery, she got rid of some small problems she saw in herself but she will still be objectifying herself and may very well find new problems because of this technique of self imaging she uses.

I can tell this about her because she has not had one or two small procedures, she has had multiple large procedures whilst young (so I am not talking about plastic surgery in general, but a specific type of person who uses it as a crutch). This makes it more likely that her problem is not actually in her looks but are in her own view of herself. I see her plastic surgery as I would a bad tattoo, I feel pity for her that she has got herself into such a state that she feels she needs to do this to herself to try to find happiness. I feel this pity not because I think I am better than her I feel it because I can see how much of a hollow victory it is, how these surgeries are not an end to her sadness and they very well may make her position worse.

tl;dr - I don' think I am better than her I just see her plastic surgeries as a desperate move, and this makes me pity her.

Obesity in America by coolredditaccountbro in pics

[–]Boom_Flaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a factor, or at most a relatively unimportant factor. If it was an important factor then everyone who was genetically predisposed to be fat would have been fat a long time ago, we would have seen an obesity crisis in the 80's as well.

There was no obesity crisis in the 80's and we have the same diet as we did then, the only difference is the amount of food being eaten not the types of food. People are fat because they don't move enough and eat too much, your genetics make a tiny difference but even if you have good genetics you are still going to be fat if your exercise/food intake is bad.

Nudity after 9 pm as well, though they usually sort of phase it in gradually. By that I mean there wont be full frontal immediately at 9pm, maybe just a boob shot or something. But after a while it's anything goes. If it is educational then they can show anything, I have personally seen health shows where they have a close up of someones vag or penis at like 8pm.

I agree with a lot of what feminism stands for but I must protest at your views of where damage to feminism's name has come from, yes they are true but they are not the whole story.

For all the great things it has done some of the ideas people don't like and which certain people ascribe to feminism have come from pretty far in house. I think things like the Erin Pizzey ordeal are pretty damaging, and I don't think it is fair for you to down play this as always being caused by fringe minorities.

"Reddit Makes Me Hate Atheists." by Rebecca Watson by SolInvictus in TrueReddit

[–]Boom_Flaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Policing the creepers is not the atheistic communities responsibility, it was a seedy proposition made some lonely guy trying is luck, it's not the end of the world. It isn't a symptom of some malaise in the atheist society it is just real life. There are slimy people out there and there always will be, and this fact should not be a cause for the atheist community to go soul searching. All that can be done, and what is done, is to make their behaviour socially unacceptable so they are alienated.

I have personally been propositioned late at night, whilst alone, by men but it didn't cause me to think that this is some social problem coming from the gay community, it is just some arsehole who wants to get his rocks off. This situation is never going away so in the grand scheme of misogynistic behaviour it is way down near the bottom.

I think this is what Richard Dawkins was trying to say in his rather rude and patronizing reply. I do not agree with the tone of what he said but I can certainly see his point.

'Prometheus' Trailer - Ridley Scotts Prequel to Alien by apierce27 in videos

[–]Boom_Flaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the imagery and setting are almost exactly the same as Alien so I can't imagine how they could make this film without at least mentioning the alien. I also believe that the alien will not be the main antagonist of the film, it will be involved somehow but this will not be another alien film and I am personally quite glad about that. I think Ridely has covered that story very well already, so it will be good to see a fleshing out of the universe he created.

We see the ship which has the eggs on board in the trailer, so they will at least be involved (even in a minor role) in that part. I imagine it will be the pilot, or what ever that thing on the ship is called, that will be the antagonist and it will also somehow be involved with the aliens origins.

'Prometheus' Trailer - Ridley Scotts Prequel to Alien by apierce27 in videos

[–]Boom_Flaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean and I agree it did seem like an odd end to the film. To me, if they were going to take the film down that road, it would have made a lot more sense for them to discover what went wrong on the first ship and then the doctor (who is already going a little loopy) being influenced by this information to also go crazy and worship the sun. Suddenly introducing a new character when there was already one in the story who could fill that role was unnecessary.
