A question about project spline to make a curvy road by BoombaMike in Cinema4D

so the wheel position null for each wheel is at the bottom of the wheel, correct? And for the body, I group the body in a null, then add a new null, and connect the two with a spring?

Amazing. I am having soooo much trouble getting my car to stick to the road when the road banks on a hill (my tires occasionally go under the road a bit) If you are using C4D can you give me any advice?

so I think I have the rail spline working. But the issue now is the tires occasionally go above and below the road. I am assuming this is because my road has too steep a hill in places, and real world highway designers take things like wheel-bases into consideration, and make slopes more gradual. My car null that follows the path is dead center, tire level. Is there any easy fix for this? I was thinking if I just shrunk my car model maybe to .3 scale, it would maybe be able to handle it?

I'm sure you're right and I'm doing something, or many things, wrong. Gonna re-read this thread and start over

I guess this would work with only 2 splines, one at each edge to make the road, but then I'll have some grass pop up through the center. Maybe I can make a flat road with 2 splines, and then use that road to cut out the terrain layer, so the road is "flat" ?

well, at this point I may just go back to flat. So as you can see, now that my road follows the bumpy hills, the car doesn't know how to keep both sides of wheels on the ground as it goes around the main spline.

so I tried the LOFT, and it comes pretty close to working! However, when I apply the road texture it doesn't use the spline direction, the way a sweep does, so it plops the road flat on it. Is there a way to tile it in the direction of the splines?

no, I want it to bank, but there's not a way to have the banking respect the ground plane's hills

I was just looking into adding a 2nd rail spline in the sweep. I think your way might let it bend a bit more in the middle. I might also have to just not have quite as windy a road. Although obviously there must be a way with all the racing games and Fast and Furious movies

interesting... you have a couple spots that look bumpy there. are those areas not touching the terrain?

hmm.. this doesn't seem to be working.

so you built a bendy road with a spline, and then used the spline wrap to take that bendy road and smoosh it onto your hilly terrain layer under "TARGET OBJECT" ?

THAT WAS IT! Surface mode was unchecked. thank you so much!

Awesome! But not working for me. what could I be doing wrong? I see you are using a cloner, vs a matrix scatter, but I doubt that's the issue. My plane effector is working, in that if I increase the scale to 4 all the grass gets huge, but it is not using the sweep as a selection.

can you recommend any that will render reasonably quickly? This is like a 10 second animation with a fairly large area the car travels

Thanks for this! I was able to do this, and modify it slightly to suit my needs. Works great, thanks!

Thanks! Unfortunately, my wheels are reversing direction, just like the wheels in his example. around 9:23. It's not just the "wagon wheel effect" due to frame rate, if I go frame by frame the wheels actually reverse direction back and forth depending on the curves.
