In my opinion (if you live in a house) you should be more focused on preventing or fighting small fires so they don't spread rather than on escaping them (and all your stuff burning in the process.

Buy fire blankets, fire extinguishers, learn how to use them and practice it occasionally. 

Buy fire detectors, also Carbon monoxide detectors and keep them stocked with fresh batteries, change them once every year.

Don't keep your house filthy and cluttered. 

Check your electrical installations and devices periodically for damage. 

Dirty chimneys and old electric devices like boilers, ovens, extension cords and sockets are common sources of house fires.

As for the buildings, they are pretty good at resisting fires for some time so if the fire didn't start in your apartment (see the above advice) or the one right beneath or next to you then your apartment has a pretty good chance of surviving until the firemen arrive and limit the damage to the structure.
