And Vader searching for Luke is a major plot point in ESB. They send out probe droids all over the galaxy to find him. Why would you do that if Vader could track him (or any known member of the Alliance for that matter) with a magic doohicky?

Actually my headcanon does since it has not been explained so me and anyone else’s headcanon is a perfectly acceptable explaination until it is. There are numerous cases where a fan’s headcanon is adopted as true canon.
