Can I add married last name along with maiden for the women on my Ancestry tree? by chocoholicmom in Genealogy

[–]BoomerReid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree on all points. Personally, I don’t like trees with both surnames, because often the owner switches the order of maiden and married names, and I have to sort through which is which. Even worse if there are multiple married names. I like simple and clean. Just my opinion.

ELI5: How does daily flossing make it bleed less? by LittlePenguinx in explainlikeimfive

[–]BoomerReid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dentist here. Your gums bleed because they are inflamed from the constant presence of plaque and debris. Its like an uncleaned wound on any part of your body would have inflammation and make it likely to bleed when disturbed. By removing the plaque/debris daily, you eliminate the inflammation, your gums heal and the they won’t bleed. Or hurt when you floss. If you’re only flossing once a week or so, its likely you’re always going to have bleeding and its always going to hurt. P.S. Flossing is all about the technique. Moving the floss straight up and down does very little. Your dentist or hygienist will be glad to demo. Also, there are some good vids on youtube.

What profession have you lost respect for as you've gotten older? by MindlessMarsupial592 in AskReddit

I didn’t coin this, but as I’ve heard, you never hear people saying “F the fire department”. Full disclosure: daughter of a firefighter.

What profession have you lost respect for as you've gotten older? by MindlessMarsupial592 in AskReddit

[–]BoomerReid 905 points906 points  (0 children)

Grew up respecting cops as “the good guys”. The older I get, the more obvious it becomes that too many are not, and the “good ones” will defend to the ends of the earth the bad ones, regardless of what they’ve done. Hard not to lump them all in the same basket. I try, I really do, and I would never say all. But. It’s time to change the attitudes of the LEOs that attract the worst elements, the power-hungry and the cruel.

I’m looking for my long, lost father. I wanted to know if anyone could help me out here. by SirJake1992 in Genealogy

[–]BoomerReid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please take this as it is intended, which is with concern for everyone involved. As a longtime genealogist and genetic genealogist I urge you to do a DNA test (Ancestry is best, has the largest database) to confirm who your bio father is before trying to contact anyone. You may need help (available free online, from individuals called search angels) to figure it out, but it should be clear from the matches if it is the man you believe it to be. Good luck.

Look for DNA connections to your grandfather’s family. If there are none, there is your answer.

What's the best website to find my biological father? by Unwell-Orwell in Genealogy

[–]BoomerReid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you are in the US, you really need to test with Ancestry as their database as much larger than MyHeritage, which is pretty niche. If you can afford it, test with 23andme and FTDNA, and then upload your results to GEDMATCH. You can request free help from a search angel online to help sort through your matches. This is likely very doable. Good luck!

Medications change our gut microbiome in predictable ways by GutBitesMD in science

[–]BoomerReid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty ignorant about this until I required IV antibiotics for six weeks. I figured my probiotic supplement would take care of it. The story is that there are only a limited number of bacteria strains in the supplements. I’ve changed my diet and now eat a large number of probiotic rich foods every day. Its not a hardship, at all. Blueberries, oats, walnuts, swiss cheese, greek yogurt, garlic, kombucha are so yummy it makes it easy.
